Post Subject: Baby refuses to eat solids
My son is 7 months and we have been trying to give him solid foods for a month now. We started out with veggie baby foods but he wouldn't eat those so we went to rice cereal thinking it was the flavor throwing him off. But he won't eat the rice cereal either. I'm wondering if it is possible that he isn't ready yet. He doesn't have any teeth yet and everytime I try to feed him he gags like he is going to throw up. But he is soooo hungry all the time! I am also scared because I read that the longer you wait the harder it gets to feed them later on. Has anyone had problems with this? Or had a child that wasn't ready till later on?

Try adding extra formula to the cereal. Maybe he is gagging on it because it is too thick. You could also try watering down his friuts and veggies until he is more used to them. Sometimes the problem is knew texture, and stronger taste. Especially the green vegetables.

My son didn't care for rice either, so we tried Oatmeal with Bananas and he loved it. Definitely try adding more formula. When my son first started on cereal, we had to keep it pretty runny or he would also gag. Good luck!

I would recommend trying baby food with a little bit of whole foods. Like baby food peas with a few real whole peas? Just a suggestion. Good LUck

Hello there-
Just wondering if your son ever finally got into solids. I have just started them with my son who is just about 6mos. I have tried to put rice cereal in his bottle, he will refuse the bottle and would rather throw a fit than drink it. I have tried oatmeal, carrots, mixing the cereal with juice...you name it. He will gag so hard that he eventually will throw up!!
I have an older daughter and did not have any of these problems with her. She would eat anything I gave her. But I started putting cereal in her bottle to thicken her feeds because of GERD at about 8 weeks.
My son also has GERD and is on Similac Sensitive R/S...don't know if the GERD could be part of the problem.
Would love to hear any suggestions...

I'm having the same problem with my 6 month old boy. He is a generally healthy, happy baby. But we have been trying to feed him solids for about a month and he refuses to eat. We've offered him rice cereal, oatmeal, pea puree, carrot puree, apple sauce. We have varied the consistency of each one and even added a little fruit juice (doctor's suggestion.) He will eat all of these off my finger but not from a spoon. He enjoys playing with the spoon/food, loves his high chair. But when I put the spoon near his mouth he just closes his lips.
My pediatrician told me to just keep trying. But seems like he should make some progress after a month. Advice?

I was relieved to see I am not the only mom struggling with this! Not only is my little 8 month old incredibly fussy as to what she will eat somedays she will not eat solids at all. She simply closes her lips or worse makes herself vomit it up if I succeed in getting the food into her mouth! Luckily she is still drinking 3 to 4 bottles a day. Should I just soldier on and keep trying?

Babies get most of their nutrition from either formula or breastmilk. My ds is 11 months and JUST started accepting regular food. Your lo will let you know when they are ready (by closing their mouth, turning their head, spitting it right back out, etc. if they aren't ready) and I wouldn't worry as long as your dc isn't losing a lot of weight. Ds, last week just decided he wants a taste of everything I'm eating, so dinner is now a challenge- lol . On the plus side, we have skipped the whole ordeal of spoon feeding (which I hated) and skipped right over to chopped/mashed foods he can feed himself.
