i have had a few people ask me if she was drinking water yet. The doctor had not told us she needed it yet though. Just curious at what point they need water in their diet. ...she is 5 months old eatting only her formula and baby food.

I officially started giving water to my DS when he started solid. But I did gave him a little bit before that when he had the hiccups.

I gave my daughter water starting around 2 months old. ONLY because she was constipated and my doctor recommended it. They really dont NEED it. Its not going to hurt if you give it to her. If anything, it will make your life easier later. Just dont give her too much. You dont want to replace feedings with water or anything.

Baby 411 says that you should start giving water after six months - about four to six ounces every day. My DD is only four months old, so we're not there yet

my doctor told me that if you breastfeed you don't have to give your baby water, but if you give her a formula you should star when the baby is 2 months old.Maybe she is just thirsty and doesn't need extra calories from the formula(if the baby cries 1 hour after a feeding she probably wants to something to drink not eat)

Babies can have some water, about 1 ounce for every month of age per day. But for the most part, water isn't necessary. Even formula fed babies don't need extra water if the formula is mixed properly. Babies get all the water they need from the formula or breast milk.

My pediatrician said that they really don't need it, regardless if they're on formula or breast. My son is 8.5 months old and he gets water when he eats his solids. It's never much, just enough to help wash down his food. However, my mother SWEARS by giving water to a baby. It's just an empty filler. They need the milk instead.

I was told that water in itself isn't good for babies less than 5-6 months of age and too much water was bad for them. We tried to water down the formula a little when we had constupation problems and when my DD's weight gain became too much. I wish we could have gone with breastmilk, but she refused the nipple completly. I pumped for 6 weeks and then couldn't do it anymore. When we were on strictly formula she gained weight more and got more constupated.
