Birthday Traditions

It's my baby's first birthday today, and this last year has gone by so fast! I can't believe that he walks around and gets into things. He already looks like a little boy and not so much like a baby anymore.

In my family, it is traditional that the child gets absolutely no cake or ice cream until their first birthday. Then, they get a whole cake (made special by the mom) to his/her self. When my daughter was born I also started adding yearly letters to the baby book from me. A letter that says how the last year went, all the changes that we went through, my hopes for her, and a vow to be good mother. I will continue to do these same letters for my son.

What are some of the birthday traditions you carry on for your kids?

My son's first birthday hasn't come yet (next month already, whoaaa) and my family has no traditions, but I like the letter writing idea. I think I'm going to steal that.

The birthday tradition that I've started for Lauren is to buy her a Ralph Lauren outfit for her to wear to the birthday party. For Julianna, I wanted to do another designer, but couldn't find one that would be special to her. Her birthday came and went and the only tradition we could think of is to go our for ice cream (I know it's lame, but I seriously couldn't think of anything else).

I like your tradition moonmaiden. I bought a snow-globe for my daughter each birthday. I stopped at age 5 because ya know, that is alot of snow-globes. For my 2 sons, I am buying antique piggy banks. I will stop at age 5 as well.

I have a special birthday box for Charlie and I will be getting a special little gift to put in it for him every year. Every year he will wake up to his birthday box with his speical little present inside. And after he opens it he is going to put sticker of his favorite things on it. So far it has Elmos stickers.

landin is only 6 months old, but someone told me i needed to each year take a picture of him standing next to the same thing so that when i look back you can see just exactly how much they've grown. (their idea was the christmas tree, but i am going to find something else to do it to for his birthday)

ltille - My friend did something similar. She took a picture of her dd every month, for the first year. She wrote on the baby's onsie how many months old she was.

We visit our local zoo and take a family picture in the same spot each visit, in front of the pond with beautiful gaping trees. Just keep adding kids over the years! lol

Well, it turns out that my son hated his cake. I couldn't believe it. My daughter loved her first birthday cake and just dove in face and hands first. My son took one poke at it and started screaming and waving his hands. I put it away and tried giving it back to him today since all the people have left and there wasn't so much excitement and he still freaked out. However, he loved his soy ice cream and even took the time to figure out how to feed himself with a spoon and not spill it everywhere.
