I stumbled onto a parenting blog recently. I get a chuckle out of it because I do/have a lot of these things, and I don't take it personally. But a friend of mine found it very offensive. Just curious what others think.
Got a chuckle too, but yes, quite offensive indeed.
I'm not sure what to make of it to be honest. It's a really strange site. It's not totally rude. My only question is, If these are things "white" people like, who are the "other" people?
While I definately don't agree with the obvious racism that blog screams....
I DO agree with the whole "holier than thou" attitude of people.
As a mom that is raising 1 child (soon to be two) on an income that is teetering
right below poverty level, my son (nor the new baby) will EVER ride in a $200.00
carseat. Nor will my children ever wear clothing from Gymboree, The Children's Place or the likes. (Unless given to us as a hand-me-down, which we get plenty of)
OMG, that blog is utterly ridiculous. I was highly offended reading that blog.
To think that that blogger thinks that white parents do things just to "show off" to people like the blogger is a bit narcissistic. I am a stay at home mom because we feel it's the best thing for our son. I breastfeed and use to wear him in a baby carrier because I/we liked the benefits it provides him, not because we're trying to "show off".
Our kids have clothes from The Children's Place, but only because we bought them on sale. I can tell you from experience that clothes from TCP and gymbo are good quality clothes, and although I'd never pay full price, they're worth picking up on sale because they last.
We personally would never spend $1,000 a pop on a concert, or $450 on a dress or a pair of shoes, but if you have that money, and/or have worked hard for it, it's your prerogative to spend it as you choose.
Kinda Crunchy Mama to four!
I don't find the blog offensive at all. What I see is the extremely sarcastic take the writer has toward the preconceived and wrong notion that a lot of people have that white parents are the only ones who care for their child's safety, comfort etc. and that white parents do things just to show off. I see this blog as a "hey idiot, get your head out of your ass and stop assuming crap" kind of thing. I honestly don't know why or how anyone can see/read it any differently. If you get offended or feel it is racist maybe take the time to really re-read it without preconceived notions that it's offensive and see what you think.
I have to agree with twiceblessed. This is satire. The author is writing the opposite of what they mean to show the absurdity of the situation. Another example of satire is the show The Colbert Report. Same deal, Colbert doesn’t really like the president and he isn’t really afraid of robot bears.
I found it very funny. I'm also going to call my sister and see if one of her neighbors wrote it about her!
I think your friend needs to build a bridge and move on...it was not directed to her so who cares. Besides your the best parent in the world as long as you provide love and affection to your child...not bcuz of those webkins..I didnt even finish reading it..I thought it was dumb...even the lamest parent could get their kid a webkin
I think they used a poor choice of words, and found the blog to be just "okay". It's kind of a strange blog... I personally would forget it and move on. They're not worth repeat visits.
