Since my daughter started school, where she makes her own lunch time choices on a daily basis, she has started gaining an unhealthy amount of weight. I personally struggled with how to approach this sensitive topic with her. I wanted to encourage her to make healthy decisions when she is away from home, but I didn't want to say anything that could cause her to develop body issues. I voiced my concerns to her teacher, and she recommended that I check out "The Healthy Body Book, Caring for the Coolest Machine You'll Ever Own" by children’s book author Ellen Sabin. I ordered it off of the website http://www.wateringcanpress.com/html...ybodybook.html and it has been an amazing resource!!! The book is interactive and my daughter was able to Co-author it. It covers topics like moderation and exercise by having her point out healthy food's and activities that she already enjoys. The book showed her how her body functions and takes care of her, and explains that through making healthy decisions she is taking care of this intricate "machine". The interactive aspect of the book allowed me to talk to her about how special her body is, and how important it is to take care of it. It has been so much easier to discuss what she is eating at school, she has a sense of pride in taking care of her body now and making healthy decisions. I can't recommend this to other parents enough!
