The first time my baby had eczema, I was at a loss on what to do. Good thing that my baby's pedia taught me about the 3-step approach. I looked into my baby's diet, her skin care, and the specific allergen that causes the rashes. I was also able to find out a lot of information from http://www.curechildeczema.com.

I was told that bathing everyday with just water was good for my baby who has eczema. It has seemed to help her a lot. I also use the Eucerin cream and it's better than the about 10 other creams I had tried before finding Eucerin. Folks should check to see if the ezcema is from food allergies. My baby ended up being allergic to dairy, egg, wheat and peanuts. I am breastfeeding her and as soon as I cut those things out of my diet her skin started getting a lot better. But now, about a month later, it's starting to get worse again and I don't know why. I thought if I wasn't eating the things she is allergic to then the eczema would go away. Does anyone else have experience with breastfeeding and food allergies?

    Smile Eczema

I actually was looking for a place to respond to some poorly explained information about eczema and wondered here. I thought I would share my experience with eczema with you mommies and I hope you find it helpful. First off your baby's skin is super sensitive and many babies grow out of eczema within the first year. But don't worry eczema is easy to handle in most cases. The trick is to be preventative. I am the mother of two girls (8m & 3y) who both have eczema and so do I.

First thing you need to know is; all skin is different. That's important to remember. Just because your doctor gives you samples of cetaphil doesn't mean it will work on your child. Each of my children has their own special and somewhat expensive soaps and lotions. Ask your pediatrician for samples of every kind of non-cosmegenic, and/or hypoallergenic soaps and lotions they have. They have samples, ask for them! Because you have to figure out which will work on your baby before you invest $10 for soap and $10 for lotion and some babies need special shampoo like my older child did. Also, Baths should be 15 minutes or less. If your baby is wrinkled bath time is too long. Also in the winter limit baths to over other or every 3rd day. My baby also has acid reflux so we do every other day. My older child was not a really messy baby so she was every 3rd day. When baby comes out of the bath diaper and lotion asap.

Once you have the soaps and lotion combination figured out. Buy dreft, not the knock off, not the green version. DREFT! It works on all 3 of us and every other mom I know with an eczema baby stands by it. Wash everyone's clothes with the dreft. Mommy and daddy too! Baby puts their face on your shoulder and your detergent can trigger the eczema. Also use hypoallergenic wipes. We use huggies sensitive. Both of my kids were good with them but every skin is different!

Breakout's do happen but don't worry. Minor breakouts just take an extra lotioning (2-3 times per day) on the irritated area for a few days. For more severe outbreaks you can use hydrocortizone 1%. I didn't like the idea of this steroid on my baby so my secret weapon was Lansinoh nipple cream for the harsher outbreaks. It took 1-2 applications for 2-3 days and no sign of eczema. I use the lansinoh on my baby's face outbreaks too as it is all natural and safe to eat. It's nipple cream after all. If you aren't preventative here you can get into trouble with an infection. Eczema hurts when it breaks open. In fact it burns. Don't put your baby through that. Treat it before it's a problem.

Finally, what I originally came on here for. Food allergies do not cause eczema. Can they trigger them? an article on pg 21 of the March 2012 babytalk says yes. As a person with two kids, a niece, a nephew and myself who all have eczema. I say I doubt it. Allergies cause hystamine reactions. Food sensitivity is still under researched to say this is absolutely true. So while you can watch for a rhythm in your child's eczema outbreaks you will go insane trying to figure out if their milk based formula has caused it cause there is not enough info to confirm that. I will say something that the American Academy of Pediactrics will not agree with. Babies need water. Not a lot of water but they need water. So their eczema is in control, so they can poop. Not juice, water. we all need water. I gave my 3 year old water, I had water as a baby, my 10 nieces and nephews all had water as babies. they are all well functioning adults and children. I give my child no more than one of their current serving sizes of formula as a reference. This is what I was told by my pediatrician before they changed the research. So for example my daughter drinks a 5 oz bottle of formula at each meal. So I spread 5oz of water throughout her entire day. NO MORE than that. And DO NOT give it all at once. A little here and there will not hurt your baby. A lot will!

oh yeah, Breast feeding moms your deodorant can cause an outbreak also. Just watch for outbreaks on baby's face especially around the mouth. and you use whatever lotion baby uses, and no perfume. Some babies eczema is not this severe so just change a little at a time and see if your baby improves. I hope this was helpful and sorry for ranting.
