    Question Pregnancy after IUD removal?

I have the ten year IUD and I've had it for about 2 1/2 years. I am hoping to get pregnant late April or early May 09. I hear it can take awhile to get pregnant after the IUD is removed. So I was wondering when a good time would be to get it removed? Does anyone have any experience with this?

    Hi jsbarnes,

I haven't had experience with the IUD yet since it's usually used for patients who have been pregnant before. However, I do know that there are two types, hormonal and non-hormonal. Any type of hormonal contraceptive can take from a minimum of 3 months to 9-12 months to work out of your system for you to regain fertility, depending on how strong it was. For example, orthotrycyclin lo took me about 3 months to cycle out of my system. The orthoevra patch took almost a darned year. Since an IUD feeds directly into your uterus the level of hormones won't be as great as something like the patch that had to be absorbed through your skin. Give it 3 months and of course talk to your OBG =)

I had Mirena removed early September of this year, after having it in place 3 1/2 years. I conceived early December! Good luck!

It depends on your body, but my cousin wanted to get pregnant right away so she had her's removed and she didn't get pregnant againt until almost a year after it was removed. So yeah that was a littler later than she wanted too. A friend I had took it out and started trying over a year ago and is still not pregnant. I think it should say with the iud that it could take up too a year to get pregnant again.

I know several women who would have never got an iud if they had known how long it would take thier body to get back to normal and conceive again. Than I know one who got pregnant right away afterwards. So it depends on your body.

Since you said 10 year - I believe you have the Copper one ( Non hormonal) Mirena is only 5 years ( correct me if I'm wrong) The copper one works by killing sperm on contact, it doesn't affect your ovulation at all. You still ovulate, there just isn't any alive sperm swimming up to your egg. So I would think that you should be able to get pregnant right away.

I had a Multiload IUD (copper) and had it removed after 8 years on 4 December. I conceived within a day or two of its removal (possibly even the same day) and am now 7 weeks pregnant. So, yes, you can get pregnant right away after removal of a copper IUD. I believe it takes longer with a hormonal one as it can take a while for your menstrual cycle to return to normal.

I had the Mirena IUD. I got it put in in 2003 after my daughter was born and had it removed in September 2008 and was pregnant by December 2008. My doctor told me when I had it put in I could have it removed at any time I would like and my body would go back to like it was before I even had it. I am now 12 weeks pregnant so I dont think that the IUD really effects you ater having it removed. You should be able to get pregnant right away. Good luck!!

Well its only been a few months mar_mir_lea, I had the mirena too, I had it removed in late february last year and I got pregnant in june...so it might just take another month or so...best I can say is have sex often. also placing a pillow under your butt afterward could help, you just relax for about 20 minutes
    or so.
