Don't worry about it. I, myself have both my mother's maiden and my father's last name and I've embraced it. Infact I'm trying to convince my fiance that I should keep all of my names once we get married (which will give me five). But our baby will have just his last name to avoid an argument from his crazy mother.

My partner and I legally hyphenated our last names about 6 years ago.

It cn be annoying at times to remind people to look it up by the *first letter of the name* (how hard is that!) but no more so than having to spell it for everyone.

The spelling is not because of the hyphen, though, it's because the half that she brought to the name (the first half) is not very common - her whole family has to spell it, not just those who've tacked something else on the end!

It helps that we started with two one-syllable names, so although it's twelve characters (including the hyphen) it's still only 2 syllables.

(In the area where we live, with a large German population, that's not particularly long, in either syllables or letters!)

True, there are some inconveniences, but it was important to us that we share a last name, and we will give our child the same last name.

I also like the fact that we are the only two (soon to be three - or maybe four) people in the world with our last name!

I went to highschool with a girl who had a hyphenated last name.. and after a while she dropped the last part cause it ended up being a pain in the butt to write out.
my own experience is.. my first name is hyphenated, and i think from the time i hit ninth grade, i've only gone by the first half, because once again.. its a pain in the butt to write out. i mean on legal documents you have to.. but in life.. lol. its just easier to have a short name!

I say go for it. A friend of mine kept her last name for professional reasons after she got married so she and her husband have different last names. They gave the kids hyphenated last names though. I don't think it's a big deal. A minor inconvenience now and then in order to carry on two names is fine in my book.

Before I married, I had a hyphenated last name, and it got really annoying. I didn't mind writing it out or anything, but people would often hear one and not the other, so a lot of people didn't know me by my other name. And eventually, during high school, my teacher's actually combined the two: Jennifer McLew. [McCartney-Lewis.] Sounded so dumb, so needless to say, I was relieved when I got married and had only one.

I think you should do whatever you feel is right for you child. I've actually known quite a few people with hyphenated last names and they made out okay. As for having to spell the name is happens. I had to spell my maiden name out constantly and it's not hyphenated.

As for long names it happens. My 7 year old niece is
Alicia Lynn Jane Marie and her surname because it was important to her mother and my BIL is Hazarat Hereif Hamam Iben Aber and then the last name.
