Toddler unbuckling car seat

Hey to everyone ....my almost 2 year old has figured out how to unfasten the top buckle on his car seat, the part that goes across his chest. I therefore have to constantly keep checking to see if he does it on our car trips and then when we are at red lights i refasten it and tell him that it the strap needs to stay on. Im not sure if i should buy a new car seat with a stronger buckle or if anyone has any other suggestions because it makes me nervous when he does this! Help!

Unless you can find a new car seat with a child proof release mechanism it probably won't make much of a difference. Even something that says "child proof" doesn'y necessarily mean that a child can't undo it. I would say save the money, and keep refastening the buckle. I had to do it with my son. I didn't care where we were, the second I noticed the buckle undone I turned around and fatened him back up.

Wow! I'm glad my girls haven't figured that one out! Although I can barely undo it myself- so maybe that's why. Perhaps trying to distract him in the car may be a solution? I love those magna-doodles. They aren't messy!
I certainly wouldn't buy a new seat.

yeah he's been good about not unbuckling himself for a few days now so maybe he's over it (fingers crossed!) i have been giving him more toys and a sippy cup so maybe it has distracted him

I have a feeling Charlie is going to figure out how to do that too. He's fascenated with buckles on his car seat. I'm with cay. I wouldn't get a new one. Eventually he'll understand that he has to keep it on.

I have been worried that my daughter will figure this out soon and she is only 1. She already watches me buckle it and unbuckle it and she tries to do it but cant yet. She does it in her high chair too. My mom told me that my brother got all the way out of his carseat once! She saw him moving in the rear view mirror! That is horrifying! What if he opened the door! Anyway her advice was to put the child saftey locks on the doors and she said she pulled over right away, told him NO, and popped him on the butt (not spanked him just a pop) and he never did it again.

My 2 year old just got upgraded to a booster seat...the first trip more than 7 miles away she climbed out of her seat and had her head between the front two seats in a second...I happened to be driving down the interstate going 70 at that moment. I was unlucky that the closest exit was 2 miles down the road and there wasnt a shoulder...it was not a happy moment. I pulled the car over, gave her a spanking and a stern warning and buckled her back in. A few days later she did the same thing when I was driving through the city...she got another spanking and another stern warning, and she hasnt done it since.

I was thinking maybe there is something you could do to the buckle that would make it impossible for him to do? My first thought was something with a bungee cord. It isn't perfect, but run with it and you may have an epiphany!

Make sure that the seat you go with is legal, safe, and comfortable for your child. Never leave the seat unbuckled and the straps twisted or knotted. Also, take into consideration the ease of putting your baby in and out of the car.
