Last Thursday my 3 and a Ľ year old daughter (only child) wanted to wear panties. We’ve dabbled in toilet training, but she hasn’t been consistently interested. She knew, and I reminded her when she said she wanted to wear panties, that the guidelines are: when the ladybug timer dings, she has to practice going on the potty until the ladybug timer dings again. Generally she’s very amenable to following these guidelines, and if she protests I calmly say that if she doesn’t want to practice when the ladybug timer dings then she needs to wear diapers instead of panties. The thing is, she either doesn’t know what it feels like right before she has to go – and/or (and I’m suspecting this more after observing her for a number of days) it’s more important to her not to be interrupted from playing than not to have an accident. Sometimes I even think she has this idea that she can control when she goes – so I’ve been talking to her about the fact that our bodies tell us when we have to go pee and poo – we don’t tell our bodies. At first she wouldn’t even tell me that she had an accident, though now she will come up to me and say she has pee or poo in her panties. So whether or not she’s accident free depends completely on my watching her closely and correctly interpreting that she has to go before she does, and then making the ladybug timer ding. Any thoughts on how to get her to go before the accident?
