Our son learned to sit up around the time most babies do --- 6-7 months old, and he absolutely loves to sit up and play with his toys. We had a bumbo seat and it helped him to sit up really well, I think. Unfortunately...he doesn't know how to pull himself up to a sitting position --- I have to PLACE him sitting up. He's also very uninteresting in moving around. When he's laying on the floor, he might roll around a little, but for the most part he just lays there and plays with whatever's in reach. If there's nothing in reach he might just play with his toes or just watch what's going on around him. Most of the advice I've received so far is that I'm being too nice to him by helping him sit up and/or placing his toys relatively close to him. But being the mean mom and leaving him laying on his back while he screams his head off because he wants to sit up or wants his toys is just more than a little heartbreaking. Don't get me wrong, I'm not planning on being THAT parent that never lets their child learn things for themselves, but he's just a baby...and I feel like at this age, he can't differentiate between me trying to do what's best and completely ignoring his needs. Frustrated =(
If there is something he wants go middle ground; Don't automatically give him what he wants but also don't be "mean". Set it just out of his reach, encourage him with an excited and animated voice, let him struggle a tad, and then give it to him before he gets really upset, but after he has had a change to try on his own. Same with sitting up, give him a little physical support in sitting up, but let him do some of the work too. He needs opportunity to try it himself, or he will be "lazy" but you are right, you don't need to make him get overly upset, that is just as bad for him.
Also, if I remember correctly, many babies learn to sit up by rocking on their hands and knees (or attempting to do that), then "falling" into a sitting position.
And as cuddleme said, he is just a baby. Let him develope in his own way, in his own time.
