Default Thinking about Adopting a baby

Both my husband and I have some fertility problems, we have a daughter and about a year after we had her we started trying again and it turned out that I don't ovulate and my hubby has a low sperm count so no success in conception for almost 3 years now. We have decided that we would look into adoption and was wondering what you all could tell me about it and how to cover the cost of it and all that good stuff! Thanks!

We adopted our 17-month-old son domestically when he was 3 weeks old. We were in the waiting parent pool for about a year and a half, and it took about five months of prep to get into the pool.

The first thing you need to do is contact local adoption agencies. Most have informational evening open houses and would be happy to answer your questions about the process, the costs, and the various methods of adoptions. You can also adopt via foster programs, or through private adoptions (which don't use agencies), but if you're just starting, I recommend finding an agency because they really do understand the system and can at least offer you answers to the most basic questions.

Expect an adoption to cost you around $20K. It could be less, it could be more; it depends on private v. agency, domestic v. international, and the various laws of the state in which you reside as well as the state from which you adopt. (We live in Virginia; our son was born in DC, and the agency is based in Maryland.) Adopting via foster care can be cheaper, but you are likely to get an older child (5 years and up) who may be emotionally scarred, so you need to prepare for that as well.

    Good luck!

you will definitely need some legal help. An easy Google search would reveal all of the local lawyers.

Adopting a child is not a simple task. You need to prepare your home for an adoption and should understand the legal requirement. You can adopt through an agency or direct contact. For either case you should get proper legal advice.
