Unhappy help! my year old wont eat table food

i need some help from expierienced moms. my son is going to be a year old in two week and he wont eat 3rd food or table food. we have tried third foods from gerber a few times and each time he gagged and threw up everything. the same thing happended with the gerber puffs. he eats seconds foods great and if its pureed he will eat it. i dont know if i waited to long to start table food and now hes behind for his age. i keep reading things where people started feeding thier babies table food and puffs when they were 7 months old. we didnt do that because our pediatrician said food allergies and sensitivity can develop if food is started to early. im just at a loss i dont know if its normal or how to begin to get him to stop gagging.

Remember, your child is going to eat for the rest of his life, a few weeks behind the average will not hurt him. I remember reading something like 15 months is the worry age if not eating some finger foods (I think in What to Expect the Toddler Years).

That said, ask your doctor to do a screening exam to make sure there are no problems with his mouth structure or swallowing that would account for the gagging. Most likely he is fine, but best to make sure.

Second, go at your child's pace. Always offer some table food and chunkier food with a meal of pureed foods. That way he can get some experience, at his own pace, without the worry that he might go hungry.

Try making your own food, just mash anything up and add a little liquid if needed to thin it. You can progressively make your foods thicker and chunkier - I think some kids just don't like jarred food, especially the stage 3 foods. www.wholesomebabyfood.com is a good site for homemade food.

I did babysit for a girl who would eat only a handful of the stage 3 foods. She liked her puffs, but even at age 1 wasn't eating much for table food. Now at 19 months she is eating everything just fine. Her mom didn't pressure her to eat anything. Whenever she was at my house I would put a small variety of fingerfoods on her tray (including fresh soft fruits and veggies), feed her her pureed food and let nature take its course.

Here are some links to other posts I wrote regarding introducing finger foods. Maybe you will find them helpful. (Look for the newmom! posts)

My daughter is going to be 13 months old in a couple of weeks and does not really eat much in the way of table food either. We are actually still in the process of transitioning her from formula to milk. She eats Gerber cereal and a stage 2 fruit for breakfast, a stage 1 veggie and a stage 1 fruit for lunch, and cereal and a stage 1 veggie for dinner. At dinner I try to give her a few bites of whatever we are having, cut up into really small pieces, and she is getting better about eating it. She still couldn't make a whole meal out of it, but at least she is getting used to table food. She hates the stage 3 and the toddler meals. She absolutely refuses to eat them. I just don't think they taste very good. She does eat puffs and other snacks and most of the time she does well. We did go through that gagging phase, but we just kept giving them to her one at a time until she learned to eat them. She still gags ocassionally, but its rare now. The puffs dissolve very quickly so I always felt safe giving them to her one at a time even when she didn't do very well with them. Your son just needs practice. Once she mastered the puffs, we started the yogurt melts and the freeze dried fruit. Now she can eat a few bites of cheese, cut up fruit, and other soft table foods as snacks throughout the day. I hope this helped! We struggled as well, but you just have to keep trying.
