    Question Coughing at night/Vomiting

Over the last week or so, my 6 1/2 month old daughter has started coughing in the early morning hours. We have a cool mist humidifier in her room that we use almost nightly. She also wakes up every morning with a lot of congestion. We suck out the drainage with the bulb syringe every morning. She does not really have a lot of congestion during the day hours, only at night and ealy morning. Yesterday morning after her 1st bottle of the day, she coughed so hard she vomited. Then, throughout the day yesterday, she continued to cough. It just sounds like she has a lot of drainage in the back of her throat. Last night she coughed and coughed when I put her down to bed. She was crying and would not fall asleep, which is rarely an issue for us. I finally gave her some Tylenol, rocked her to sleep (something I rarely do), and then put her down on her side to sleep. She slept good for about 6 hours then she woke up coughing again. She has been coughing on and off ever since. This morning again after her bottle she vomited. I should also mention that I thought her reflux was resolved so I took her off her Prevacid about a month ago. Any ideas as to what this cough may be from? She seems fine otherwise. Maybe a little more sleepy during the day, but she plays fine.

It very well could just be a cold. If it doesn't go away or greatly improve in a week give your doctor a call. I like to give mortin for colds, decreases any swelling inteh nasal passages that might otherwise cause discomfort, plus it lasts longer than Tylenol (being only 6 mo old, ask the Doctor first). It sounds like you are doing everything you can to make her comfortable. She probably is draining, and that is probably causing the vomiting. The vomiting may be irritating her esophogus (sp?) thus she may have some reflux symptoms. If she is not regularly vomiting, just after particularly violent coughing (and only 1x or less a day), probably not anything to worry about. But, please call the doctor if you are concerned at all about anything.

My baby and I both are fine during the day with colds because the more active we are, the less the drainage bothers us, she could be similar.

Hopefully this is "just" a cold and will pass quickly.

    Unhappy

She does not appear to have a cold. Every day now 1-4 times per day during or after a bottle she coughs and then vomits up everything she just ate! This is getting really frustrating. I have since put her back on her Prevacid to see if that helps, but no luck yet!

What does the doctor say? The much vomiting could begin to errode the esophogus lining I would imagine. Maybe she has allergies. Give her room a real good vacuuming and dusting, maybe that will help.

Pay attention to any new foods you are introducing or animals that might be in your house to try to rule out allergies.

Go to your child's doctor if you haven't already.
