3 kidneys?

i just got an ultrasound and they said my baby has 3 kidneys? Anyone ever here of this?
Where can i find info. about this??

I would get a second opinion if you haven't done so already. During one of my ultrasounds I was told my daughter had situs inversus, a rare condition in which all her organs (heart, stomach, etc.) were reversed... meaning on the opposite or wrong side of her body. I got a second opinion and found out she was completely normal, it was an error on the ultrasound technician's part. A MAJOR ERROR!! I was so worried and scared until I went for a 2nd opinion, then I felt sooo relieved and happy.

My daughter is now 9 years old, she has three kidneys, at age 2 she started to get UTI"s and after we stopped taking antibiotics, she would get sick again, so them I insited they look her over and wouldn't leave the hospital till they did ultrasound, luckily some speacialist from Seattle was here and he over heard and assumed it was Kidney reflux, so ultrasound was done,, they put dye into her bladder, and when it started leaking thru her body, they look closer and found she has 3 kidneys, one wasnt attached to the bladder from the kidney, so they had surgery next day, and she is fine. Beautiful acitve healthy girl. many many people dont believe her or us when we say she has 3 kidneys...it was never noticed in pregnancy ultrasounds! do get a second opinion, but dont be suprised if your baby does! good luck!

During my pregnancy 16 years ago it was determined my baby had "an irregular shaped kidney". More and more tests were done and it seemed ok so we all agreed to leave it alone unless we saw any problems. After my baby was born, we did ultrasounds but still only saw the same. She did not appear to be having any problems from it, so once again, we decided to leave it alone.

Throughout her life (probably more age 4-12) she's experienced mysterious abdominal pain. Every time we had it looked into I would bring up this kidney issue but we were never able to make any kind of connection, and never really came up with any answers either. We started passing it off as being connected to nerves/anxiety.

Now for the past couple of months she's been feeling sick and nauteous on and off. Last week we brought her into the hospital with abdominal pain she equated to an 8 on the pain scale. At the hospital they did a CT scan to rule out appendicitis and, again, I brought up the kidney issue. They didn't seem to find a connection, but ruled out most other things.

Since then, we've had the Urologist review her test results and he believes the irregular shape is actually a third kidney that likely is not functioning but possibly getting infected over and over and causing these problems. We will see him again in a few weeks for more tests and a final determination. If it is a 3rd kidney, it is said it will have to be removed....

Any thoughts?

I was born with 3 kidneys and they are all still working at age 35. It is really nothing to worry about. I did have to have surgery when I was 2, but it was to fix how they were hooked up. It really had nothing to do with the kidneys. Lots of kids that only have 2 kidneys have to have the same surgery that I did.

Kind of off topic but my friends daughter has situs inversus, the reversed organ thing. Also she has 10 or 11 spleens but they don't seem to bother her she just has to wear one of those med alert bracelets incase she gets in an accident or something and they go looking for her organs in the wrong place. I would talk to your Dr. if your worried about it but they will do more ultrasounds when the baby is father along and they can see more clearly.

Well, since I am now working off of a single kidney, I would have loved to have 3. Sounds like there is nothing wrong (i.e. the posts above are normal kidney issues, not the result of having the 3rd.). Your child will just have more to fall back on if there are issues.

Is it true that human being can be have three kidneys? Please share some extra information about this, we need it.

hi there.well i can tell you that i was diagnosed at the age of 5 with 3 kidneys due to having some slight bleeding in my urine and a stinging (like you get with a water infection) and an x ray showed i had a third kidney. i had a few hospital appointments to check my urine every so often and had no reoccurrent problems till about 10 years old.they said at the hospital the bleeding was due to my growing and the kidney stretching !?? anyhow im now 38 and i personally have had no problems with having a third kidney till this day.I dont personally suffer from constant water infections or back problems either which some may have said i may have. well i hope this may be of some help .actually when i was diagnosed at the hospital , i remember the doctor stating that another child they recently were seeing had 4 kidneys! but for me it has been no problem up till now.all the best . michelle

I have three kidneys (I am age 68). All three are connected and
functioning properly. I have never had any physical condition
related to my having three kidneys.
