I was 12 weeks last saturday!! Now I just need to vent a little.... I went to my Dr. appt. on thursday and he was NOT happy with my weight gain. I had gained 8 lbs in 4 weeks. WOW !! Since I have NOT had any morning sickness at all I have no trouble eating ( thank GOD ) He had said to me hmmmm do we need to talk about weight management?? I was SO upset after I left there I was in tears. He had told me he only wanted me to gain 3 lbs when I returned in 4 weeks. Now I feel guilty every time I put something in my mouth ! Don't know how to feel about this feeling of guilt right now. Any advise or comments would help ! thank you.
Well, my whole life has been a diet. I've been overweight since I can remember. I was so afraid when I got pregnant that I would be scorned. I don't eat bad and excercise, but I just can't shed the extra weight. Surprisingly, I haven't gained any weight yet, but I do understand how you feel. I'm afraid to gain ANY because I feel like they're already saying, "my goodness. stop eating." Plus, since I'm already overweight, I'm only supposed to gain 15 pounds, whereas a regular weight person is supposed to gain 30-35.
My advice is not to stress yourself out about it. As long as you're eating healthy and in moderation (they say only 300 more calories per day than you usually eat), you shouldn't have a problem.
I am sorry that you had a negative experience. Maybe next time tell him that he was a bit too abrasive about your having gained a little more weight than he'd like and that you would appreciate a little more descency when giving criticism.
Like I said, though, don't stress yourself out about it.
I'd just keep track of what I was eating so that you could show him you're really not over eating. They say you should gain a little in the 1st trimester but most of the weight gain happens in the 2nd & 3rd trimesters.
Also, depending the time of day of your appointment and what you had to eat so far that day and how long it had been since you'd eaten those things can all effect what the scale says.
I'm at 11 weeks and went in and my doctor discussed my weight with me too. Although I actually lost 2 lbs in 4 weeks - not good - particularly since I haven't been throwing up. I don't particularly understand how I lost weight since I eat ALL the time. Although I do eat less at meals, I just eat more snacks between meals.
Try not to take the comment about weight gain that way. It's a medical comment. It's your doctor's job to tell you to watch your weight. It doesn't make him a mean guy, or you a bad person. You just need to slow down your weight gain.
Ask your health care provider how much weight you should gain during pregnancy. A woman of average weight before pregnancy should gain 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy. Underweight women should gain 28-40 pounds during pregnancy. Overweight women may need to gain only 15-25 pounds during pregnancy. You may need to gain more or less weight, depending on what your health care provider recommends.
Im sorry that you had to go thru that. I know that his response may have seemed in-sensitive, and maybe he should have put his concern another way, but the fact is, you will want to watch your weight gain. It can be dangerous to gain extra weight during pregnancy. You can have high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, etc. Not only that, the extra pounds can be difficult to shed afterwards.
Im sure that you have read all of this, and know of the dangers. I would definately try to eat a balanced diet, and try to avoid empty calories (chips, candy, pop, juice, donuts, etc). Being pregnant myself, Im 17 weeks, I know that food cravings can be a nightmare. I have been eating what my body tells me it wants, but in moderation. My hunger comes in waves, every 2 hours. I try to eat a sensible portion of everything I eat. Eating for (2) is not in my vocabulary, as it is just an excuse. We dont need to add anything more than 300 calories to our diets, during this Trimester. I am not saying that I stick to this, but I try, because I do not want to be overweight. i had my last appointment in late July. To date, I have not gained any weight. I have my next appointment on August 27th, and expect a mild change then.
I was 20 weeks before I actually gained any weight. I kept losing 3 lbs and gaining only those 3 back, going back and forth. I was very concerned and my doc never said anything about it. I talked to the nurse and she said it varies from person to person. The doc said the baby is actually 1 week ahead of schedule, so I guess everything is ok. To date I've only gained 5 lbs, and I'm 24 weeks. In my family, heavy weight gain is common with pregnancy. Several of my cousins being thin before, gained 50+ lbs. with each of their babies. So, I was concerned about myself. I agree with brittneeskidmore, I would talk to your doc about it next time. Just tell him he needs to find a more delicate way to talk to you about this subject.
I wouldnt feel guilty about your weight gain, unless thier is cause for alarm. I am 22 weeks and I have gained 2lbs. My weight gain with my DD 4 years ago was minimal as well. However, my sisters both gained mega weight with their pregnancys. No two women are alike.
