Sorry to hear you're going to need the help of a specialist. I am now 22 weeks pregnant with a baby conceived via IVF. There are a number of infertility forums on the web -- they made the process so much easier for me (mostly because I knew I wasn't alone). The costs will vary depending on the treatment you need but a ballpark estimate is about $2,000/cycle for medication (IUI or IVF) plus another $750 for IUI and about $12,000 on up for an IVF cycle. Will your insurance cover your treatments? If not, you may want to look into getting involved in a clinical study which will cover the costs of your treatments if you qualify. Hi Dara122,

Depending on your insurance and how far you have to go, will determine the cost. Once you have a consultation with the fertility clinic they will tell you and then you can call your insuance company. My insurance covered all blood work and ultrasounds, and i had to pay my co-pay for the clomid and the shot and then we paid $500 for the IUI, which worked. Good Luck, you are in my prayers.

Fortunately for us our insurance paid all of the IVF treatment. We have BCBS of New Jersey and they cover everything. I did talk with other women in the office and some of them told me that they did financing. If for example the first cycle doesn't work they will (the finance company & doctor) will charge you less and so on and so on. If by the fourth cycle you are not pregnant the finance company will pay for that cycle for you. The treatment was about $15,000. I need extra injections. You should really check with your insurance company first, you might be surprised at how much they are willing to pay. Also, depending on you troubles you might want to try IUI first, it's cheaper!

My DH & I endured 6.5 years of various fertility treatments and have friends who have done less years, but invested far more money. First things first, make sure when you go to the specialist that you and your hubby are getting tested at the same time. Don't put yourself through years of treatment before insisting he be tested too.

Then, depending on how intense the specialist suggests you get with treatment, you should really discuss with your hubby how much you're willing to spend and how far you're willing to go with treatment. Also, maybe go ahead and discuss whether or not you're open to adoption, which can sometimes be cheaper than treatment, and some people consider it a more "sure thing."

Also, having been a billing clerk for a physician's office, my professional advice is that you make sure the billing clerk for the specialist is being as specific as possible in your diagnosis codes being sent to the insurance company. (My medication, Repronex, would have cost us $300 per vial...we used 20 per cycle had the doctor used an infertility diagnosis. HOWEVER, since we knew that PCOS was the cause of my infertility they used a PCOS and ovulation dysfunction code, which made my medication $40 per month!!! Also, with these codes my procedures...Ultrasounds, blood work and inseminations were all paid for in full. The only cost we had to cover was travel and hubby's sperm wash.)

The cost varies greatly depending on which type of treatment you choose. Also, the first treatment may not work and therefore, you may have to go through multiple treatments adding to your costs. But definitely check with your insurance to see how much they will cover.
