    Default What's happening with TV???

Has anyone else noticed the steady decline of kid friendly televisin programs? And I'm talking about programs of tv stations that, for my entire childhood, were considered "kid" stations... I feel like I can't even allow my 6 year old to watch Nickelodeon after 11 in the morning! Disney channel is even getting hard to follow as far as content goes. Sorry, but it's making me really irate. What happened to my TV!!!! I feel like a meanie when I tell my daughter she can't even relax in her bedroom after a hard day of school and watch t.v. with her snack.... "Sorry hun, but That's So Raven seems to be focusing on how to throw a party behind your parent's back".... Geez, kid's TV used to be stuffed animals or animated characters jumping around the screen talking about "eat your veggies" or "be tolerant".... I was satisfied with that when I was a kid. Now it's assumed the kids have to see the latest pop diva on a show or the station's ratings will fall. Sad, but it's probably true.

Yeah, I hate the summer schedule. We are in CDT, and after 9am, Disney is done with their preschool programs. Nick Jr. is on until 11 or 12noon, I think. The only thing you can rely on is PBS, I guess!

I agree with you about the decline of kid friendly programs. Cartoons just seem so violent, and a lot of them are just gross in my opinion. And a lot of the Disney shows seem to focus on the girls being mean to each other and trying to get attention from boys...I really like Clifford and Dragon Tales...but aside from those shows I feel like I have to watch every show to make sure there aren't things in them that I don't want my daughter learning (yet at least!)

    Cool

I totally agree and thought I was the only one noticing this. But honest to god putting the cartoons a side, you know what bothers me to the fullest? When we are home my step daughter is online playing games and my husband and I are watching TV and this “girls gone wild” commercials pop up. That is sooo disturbing to me! They seem to start putting them at 11pm sometimes 10pm. We let my husband’s daughter stay up late on the weekends especially during summer break. Does this bother anyone else or is it just me?

Lol, no disco you are not the only one! I can't count how many times the same thing has happened to me when I'm watching a movie on say USA or something with my daughter... God forbid I venture from the Disney channel for a movie special... I thought I had it covered when I made a "radio only" rule for homework times during the school year, me and my daughter both love country music, then this song popped up "save a horse, ride a cowboy"???? And right after that a radio commercial advertising Trojan condoms... Complete with moaning. And this was at like 3:30 in the afternoon. Ahhhh it's not only TV. I think I might just check myself into the local mental hospital before summer is over... I thought kids (and parents) were supposed to be able to "chill" during the summer break, I dunno something stupid like RELAX AND VEG IN FRONT OF THE TV

I agree with you girls. It would be nice to have some good quality programming available for preschool through elementary, especially later than the wee hours in the morning (Playhouse Disney is done now at 10 am for us- a huge bummer). Fortunately, I don't have girls because I think I'd go crazy with all of the sexual dress and content in shows that seem aimed at young girls- not that there aren't plenty of poor examples for the boys, too. I've only been playing kids CD's or the local contemporary christian station when my boys are in the car because of all of the innappropriate material and commercials on a lot of the other stations. It really is sad, but it also explains atleast part of why current generations of kids are more unruly and disrespectful than the last...

Oh, I could rant about this all day... one last though though- have you seen the Horton Hears a Who movie? My friend and I took our kids and daycare kids (ages 2-4) to see it in the theaters when it came out. I was really disappointed by a couple of the words used (I think it was stupid or dumb and boob- as in referring to a person as one). A couple of the kids got freaked out by the dentist scene with him getting a shot. The kids and I loved the movie otherwise, but these couple of things ruined it. Why should I worry about having to screen a G rated Dr. Suess film that we all know and love for "added content" before I let my kids watch it??? What a pain!

Yes I have seen Horton Hears A Who, and I agree, there were some things in the movie that I didn't like. Course there seems to be inappropriate things in all G rated movies now days. In Ice Age 2, one of the animals calls another one a pervert! I don't want to explain to my 5 year old what a pervert is! I just get kind of ticked because they seem to put things in the movies that aren't appropriate for children, but will be enjoyed by the parents...um, parents are going to take their kids to see movies even if they are the dullest things on earth..because they know the KIDS will enjoy them! Some of the material is just not necessary, in my opinion.

ahhh the beauty of ondemand. if you have time warner cable the digital stuff you can go into the 900's they have kids and preschool on demand. it is chuck full of barney sesame street and dora. my kids love it. i dont know if the satelite companys have it or not but i know that dig cable has it. trust me when my 2 year old is in melt down mode at anytime day or night i click channel 917 and put on a dora episode. Every tuesday is new release day at walmart, pick up a few dvd's new flicks or even episodes of your kids' fav shows on dvd, you'll have it on hand and then you dont have to worry. i am the dvd queen. we seriously have over 300 movies. the kids have their own rack so i dont have to worry about them grabbing knocked-up or waiting. (not at all for kids, but funny as hell)
