BC implant?

I'm currently pregnant with #2 (ds is only 1yr, heaven help me) and am interested in getting a birth control implant after I deliver. I've done some research on the Internet, and intend to ask my doctor about it when I see her next, but I was wondering if anyone here had any personal experience with being on the implant.

Specifically, do you know how soon after childbirth you can get it? Did you have any absolutely dreadful side-effects? And if you think it's a bad idea, what would you reccomend instead? Bear in mind that I have a brain like a sieve and can't be relied upon to take pills regularly.

I just really want a good way to prevent pregnancy that takes most of the capability for human error our of the equation. After ds we went condoms, and obviously that failed spectacularly. So any help would be great.

I have not used the implant, however, will note that it can't be used while you are breastfeeding.

Have you considered a tubal ligation or vasectomy if you are sure this is your last one?

I have the Mirena and I love it. I got it when my DD was 7 months old, and it's been almost 3 years. I haven't had any side effects, but it did take longer for the benefits to kick in. Doc said I would notice a lighter period in a month or so, it took closer to 6. But lighter is an understatement so I can't complain; it is more like 6 days of spotting.

You should talk to your doctor, he/she would have a lot of good recommendations based on your history and medical situation. My doc recommended the Mirena and I'm thrilled with it.
