There is a community-wide garage sale going on in one of the subdivisions near Superguy's school so I thought I'd stop by, see what I could find.

I walked away with a handful of nice hankies/scarves (although I have no idea what I'm going to do with them!) and a half dozen Dr. Seuss books in brand-new condition. All for a dollar. :-D

We have a community wide garage sale this weekend too (Northern Point). We plan to put our stuff out tomorrow and Sunday. I've never done a garage sale before!

a word of advice, ra11en: if you are really out to get rid of your stuff, don't overprice! I don't know what kind of community you're in, but here, the people to like to garage sale are very "cheap", so to speak. (They are garage sales after all ) I've held one the last few years during our community sale, and probably will again this year, and for the stuff I put out, I usually come out with about $40 -$50, enough to go enjoy a nice lunch after all the work I put into the garage sale! LOL

Thanks myboysmom! I'll have to keep an eye on my husband when we're putting the price dots on all our stuff. He's always out to 'make a buck', and since neither of us go to garage sales, I'm sure he'll go too high.

Making $40-$50 when all I really want to do is clear out stuff from the house is sufficient to me! I have a lot of books and I figured I would make those $.50-$1.00, is that about right? What about baby onsies, what is a good price for those? I have so much to get rid of, and we've never done this!!

I just finished a garage sale about a month ago. I did overprice some of my items knowing that I could always knock a little off. Some people don't haggle at all and will pay what you mark an item at if they want it. I think that overpricing helped me to make quite a bit of the $120 I made.
I LOVE consignment and getting a good deal. I always try to look at what I would have paid retail. Dr. S. books can be as high as $8! Way to go!

Depending on the book (wellworn, hardcover, etc) I probably wouldn't go over $.50, but that's around here. Nicer for $1.00 probably. If your onesies are in good shape, again, depending on the kind of shoppers, probably around $.75. But, like Sherriann said, you can always mark high and come down, or if you notice someone debating over an item, tell them you're willing to bargain. Good Luck! I really need to get my butt in gear too; ours is in 2 weeks, I think!

Thanks again! Its a pretty nice neighborhood / area. The homes immediately around us are all brand new and in a very good school district. We're pretty excited about finally participating in it; our 3rd year here and first time we'll be having one. Mama needs a new pair of shoes!

One thing that went like crazy at the sale I did with some other moms was video tapes! Someone marked them at 1-2 dollars each and they flew off the table. Everyone had to stop to take a look too. I was shocked that in the DVD age today people wanted video tapes! If you have any that you don't want anymore and are taking up a lot of space, try to get rid of them this way.

Is there anything you SHOULDN'T sell at a garage sale? I've always thought pretty much everything goes, although some items sale better than others.

I almost always end up bringing my knick-knacks, breakables back inside, no matter how low I price them. Although, I did sell a porcelain doll last year really quickly! Since you live in a nicer neighborhood, though, You could probably be safe to up the prices a little bit.
