This is a little embarrassing to admit but after some of the comments my family made I set up a poll on my blog, asked for opinions on facebook, posted this thread on here, and spent hours (literally) looking at Google & Bing search listings on the name. After all of my searching and reading everyone's comments I came to realize 3 things.

    1. Someone will always have something bad to say (to your face or behind your back) about what you name your child
    2. No matter what you name a kid people will find a way to tease them or be cruel to them if that's what they want to do
    3. I don't have to make a decision about this baby's name until I am writing it on his birth certificate and even then it isn't up to anyone but us.

So thank you for all of your comments, especially you ruth_petty, I feel so much better about putting this decision on the back burner and when it comes down to it naming my child what he's meant to be.

But still if someone knows of something that is really wrong with the name (like it means some horrible thing that will plague him for life) please let me know.

I have a new issue on my hands with the name Tripper, but I'm not sure if I should let it be an issue and I was wondering what you think?

Someone sent me an email telling me that he found a link that stated Tripper was a slang term for an STD in some other country.

Would you still use a name if you learned that it could possibly be slang for an STD in some other country?

True. Plus I've always been VERY skinny, so I got 'Heather Feather' a lot, or 'Heather Heather, Light as a Feather,' etc.
Its always going to be something, no matter what.

Zack_Jenn....if you won't be living in that country, who cares? I've never heard of an STD being called that, so it sounds like he was just reaching for reasons to not like the name. I wouldn't worry about it.

I agree, sounds like he just doesnt like the name and searched for a reason for you not to use it. Its not slang here, so I wouldnt worry about that.

I think Naomi is pretty normal...but that damn movie Van Wilder came out, my officail nickname became Imoan - my name backwards. Every kid will get made fun of for one reason or another

I'm a fan of unique names, but Tripper.... I can't imagine an age where a boy or a man would be proud to introduce himself as "Tripper." As a child he will get teased about it. As a man, people will assume that it's a teasing nickname that stuck. He will get tired of hearing "What's your real name?"

Perhaps you could find a variation on the name that has a similar sound, but doesn't mean, literally, "one who falls over all the time." Here are a few ideas: Tanner, Thatcher, Trigger, Tucker, Turner

I don't like Tripper but if you both love it go with it.
