    Default Honesty Please

My husband and I are expecting our 3rd child in January. We like names that aren't common, but not weird. With our other 2 kids there wasn't a question of what they were going to be named we just knew, but with this one we hadn't been able to think of any names that we liked until yesterday.

We like the name Tripper James Calvin Ivie.

Honest opinions please. We don't want to name our kid something that will scar him for life or anything so please be honest even if it seems brutal.

The 4 names are going to be all one name? Or are you asking about them as 4 separate names? I think the James Calvin Ivie part sounds really cute. I dont like the Tripper too much though.

The 4 names would all be one. It is tradition on my husband's mother's side for boys to have 2 middle names and then Ivie is our last name.

Tripper is the part I am most wanting opinions about since it would be his first name.

Also if you don't like the name Tripper will you please post why?

For example; It would be helpful for us to know whether you don't like it because you like the more classic names or if you don't like it because tripper rhymes with stripper or if you don't like it because it means something awful.

FYI: The baby name databases that have it define Tripper as "The Traveler"

I don't like Tripper only because I'm thinking of him being in grade school with other little boys. He'll hear it all, I'm sure, and get a lot of crap for his name. I hadn't thought about it rhyming with stripper until you mentioned it, but I KNOW other little boys will definitely think of that too. And its pretty similar to Tipper Gore, though kids won't make that connection until they're a bit older.
I also am a big fan of less common names, but I think this one might be a little too unusual, in my opinion.
Though have you ever seen Failure to Launch? The main character, Matthew McConaughey, is named Trip. And I still think that's an odd name, but I like it better than Tripper. It could easily be used as a nickname, and other kids might take that easier?
Basically, if it was me, I wouldn't use it. But its not me, so that's not important! If you guys like it, that's what matters.

I agree that he will probably be picked on in school with a name like Tripper. My first thought was Jack Tripper, but younger kids won't know that. I also am a fan of different names. My son's name is Tsjaad (pronounced Chad). You might consider looking into foreign spellings of more common names. My son's name id Dutch

I also think Trip is cute I cant really give you a good reason why I dont like Tripper, it just wouldnt be a name I would pick. I would also think he would get made fun of so maybe thats why. I guess I should have elaborated, sorry. If you guys really like it than there is no good reason not to use it

I'm just having a hard time because when my husband suggested it I really loved it. But I don't want to do anything to my child to make things more difficult than they need to be. School and interacting with other children can be hard enough as it is. Why do I feel so defensive about it?

Ruth is right, his name will get made fun of no matter what it is. My name is Heather (and as I am sure that H.Starr can attest to this) I got a lot of "hey there Heather, how's the weather, wanna play tether?" I say pick a name that you like and if someone else has a problem with it then they can stuff it. My son's name is Tiarnan and one of my DH's cousins tried telling us that it wasn't "a white name" (whatever that f*ing means). I was 5 days post-partum and I let him have it. On Thanksgiving day no less. My point being, Tripper is a cute name and if you like/love it then use it.

I personally would not choose that name for the sole reason of it's not Celtic.

    Hope this helps!
