The Project Pregnancy Blog

Welcome to My Blog!

By Erin Zammett Ruddy on Monday, August 17, 5:35 pm EDT

Hi, I’m Erin! First, let me say how excited I am to be here. I’m not new to the blogging world -- I wrote the life with cancer blog over at glamour.com for three years -- but I am new to Parenting. And I have to say, as much as I cherished writing life with cancer, I’m pretty pumped about the new, more cheerful topic (who doesn’t love a pregnant woman? Well, maybe my husband…but we’ll get to my hormonal meltdowns later).

So, yes, I am a cancer survivor -- chronic myelogenous leukemia, which I was diagnosed with when I was 23 -- but, for the first time in a long time, that label doesn’t really define me. My life just isn’t much about cancer anymore (thank God -- and Gleevec, the life-saving drug I take).

What my life is about: Being a working mom (I’m a freelance magazine writer), raising a super-active, allergic-to-everything two year old, trying to be a good wife (whatever that means!) and preparing my already-packed life for the arrival of baby number two. It is beyond a blessing to be pregnant again -- you can read more about that journey in the September issue of Parenting -- but I ain’t gonna lie: I’m nervous about 2010 and how I’m going to make it all work. Add to that the four million other things there are to obsess about when you’re pregnant -- the joys, the worries, the people who say super annoying things -- and we’ll have plenty to talk about here.

A few pregnant-lady facts about me:

My due date is January 12, 2010, which makes me 19 weeks.
I am going to find out the sex of the baby -- next week, in fact. Stay tuned!
I am not exercising at all, unless you count chasing my two-year-old, Alex, around 24/7. I don’t.
I have eaten the occasional cold cut sandwich (not heated up) and, damn, it tasted good.
I do not sing to my belly, talk to it, or put any anti-stretchmark creams/lotions/potions on it. This makes me feel mildly guilty.
I’ve eaten more Cheetohs in the past five months than I ate during my entire childhood. I seriously hope my kid doesn’t come out orange.
I don’t miss wine as much as I thought I would, but I still have to get through the holidays so I’ll keep you posted….
I do miss guilt-free cold-cut sandwiches (see above).

Over the course of this blog, you will learn a lot more about me (I’m an oversharer, what can I say?) but I hope that I’ll learn about you, too. I live for the comments section and having gone through one pregnancy already, I know how important a support system can be. So I hope you’ll check in every day and tell me about you!

Welcome again to my blog.

More soon.

Erin

Hi Erin! I'm so glad that you are blogging again. Congratulations on Baby #2! I just wanted to tell you, that you are an inspiration to me. I am 36 and was diagnosed with CML in January 2007 (on my birthday!!) I am on the Gleevec also, and was leukemia free after 6 months. Not only have you taken the risk and come off of the medication once to have a baby, but now you are doing it again! It is women like you who have taken the courage to do it that gives me the hope that I can do it too in the coming year. I look forward to following you during this tremendous journey. Thank you so much! Melanie

Hi Erin! I was so bummed when you quit the other blog, and I am so happy to see this one. I too am a mom to a 12 month old son. My husband is ready for the next one, but I'm still nursing our son (and working up to 70 hours/week) - so I am not quite ready yet. I am so happy for you and look forward to hearing all about how baby #2 fits into your life.

My son's birthday is just a day off of Alex's (Bennett's is 9/3/7), if I remember correctly. It is so much fun to compare the boys born around the same time (including Chrissy's Jack). I'm glad you are back. I can't wait to hear how Alex does with his new sibling. We're planning on TTC in Feb (we want 3 yrs spacing), so you'll be my guinea pig. LOL! Great to have you back.

As far as size goes I am on the other end: people cannot believe I am 5mo. prego, and I swear they are frowning at my belly as if I am starving my child! I had the same problem with my first, not really "popping" until 7 months or so, and she was born at 22 inches long and 9.4 lbs! It's hard not to get defensive, but as you know the unsolicited comments will continue until---well, they never stopped--just went straight to unsolicited child-rearing advice! My doc says I'm perfectly healthy and yes, running after a two-year old IS exercise!!!!

Hi Erin...I was so glad that Chrissy told us about your new blog. I loved reading your Glamour blog but not really for the cancer aspect, but more for your take on life and what's going on with you. I wondered about your pregnancy and hope things are going great. I love your oversharing, and find that your viewpoint and mine generally are the same! Take care! Kelly

8/20/2009 at 6:55 pm
Hi Erin, I have followed your Glamour blog for quite a while. I am happy to see that you will be continuing your story here. I am a fellow cancer survivor-Stage 1 Breast Cancer, diagnosed at 37 in 2006. I have three beautiful daughters 14,10, and 7, whom I cherish, and I am thrilled that you will be able to experience the joy of Motherhood with another little miracle. The reason I am actually writing was to comment on the cold-cut dilemma! I'm guessing you feel you have to abstain because of the nitrates(?)...well, I have good news! Since my diagnosis, I have become a label reader, and I too wanted to give up nitrate-filled deli meat. I discovered Hormel makes a nitrate-free deli meat. They have turkey, ham, chicken etc... It isn't exactly the same-but you may find it helps with your "cravings"- and it is virtually guilt-free!!! Hope this is helpful-I wish you an "uneventful" pregnancy!! Looking forward to sharing your journey!!

Erin, I thought your blog was fantastic. Great to hear (read) that you are doing so well and looking forward to your new little bundle of joy. Had my son 2 months early last month, but he is home now thriving and I am just so in love with him. By the way, totally feeling you on the cold cuts! And excercise...ditto for me on that too. A two-year-old is exercise enough! Keep us posted on the sex and congratulations on the blog!!

I just got finished reading your story in the Parenting magazine. I wanted to thank you for sharing your story. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis following a miscarriage last year. My husband and I have a 2 year old, but would like to have more. Our doctors have said that in order to have a baby we have to stop all MS medications. I am nervous that stopping the meds will cause a flareup in my MS symptoms. After reading your story, I feel that I too can take a risk and try for another child. I grew up in a large family so ofcourse I want my child to have siblings. I just wanted to say thank you for giving me the courage to stop the meds. My family and I will pray for you and yours. I wish you the best! Thanks again!
