Swine flu: I'm a little paranoid…are you?

By Erin Zammett Ruddy on Monday, October 26, 9:40 am EDT

When we talked about the flu shot a while back I was saying how miffed I was that Alex’s pediatrician ran out of the regular vaccine and that we were put on a waiting list. I was worried because I’m pregnant, I have the cancer situation and Alex is in daycare three days a week. Well, I have since had my own flu shot and just found out that I will be getting the H1N1 shot as well--my OB is adamant about it and after reading up on how serious swine flu is for pregnant women, I feel the same way (here’s some pretty good basic info, if you’re interested).

Another reason I’m suddenly so concerned: My friend just spent two days in the hospital with her six-week old who has swine flu. As you know, when a baby under three months gets a fever, they are automatically admitted to the hospital for a spinal tap. The baby is fine, thank God, but he had to get poked and prodded for days and it was really scary for my friend. I can’t even imagine….

I’m also worried because we found out Alex cannot get either flu shot. Thanks to his severe egg allergy it’s just too dangerous. So my doctor has said we have to be extra, extra careful. And that everyone else in the family should have both vaccinations. So now we’re just waiting for the H1N1 shots to arrive and figuring out how we can avoid sick people for the next few months (and beyond…the baby will be here in January which is still flu season).

A friend posted a question about the H1N1 vaccine on her facebook status last week and tons of people chimed in with various opinions. Many said they weren’t getting it or giving it to their kids because of the unknown risks. In all my research I couldn’t find any risk that really outweighed the benefit. So, I’m curious…are you getting it? Would you if you were high risk like me? Are you worried about the flu this year? Let’s discuss….

P.S. Check out the Mommy Blog competition over at The Bump. My friend's blog (which already won Best Special Needs Blog) is up for Best Overall and I really want her to win (because she's awesome, her son is awesome and her blog is really freakin' good). So...if you have a second, take a look (and vote for To the Max!)

Yes, paranoid, and confused!

Hi Erin, The reports I've read about the severity of swine flu's effects on pregnant women are really scary, and riding the subway every day I am super paranoid (verging on OCD) about all of the sniffling, coughing strangers with whom I am confined in a little metal box (I have been giving sick people SUCH dirty looks). I actually go to a high-risk OB doctor b/c I have an increased blood clot risk (had a clot a few years ago). I asked my doctor when I'll be getting the swine flu vaccine, and was told that I'll definitely receive the regular flu vaccine, but not the swine flu one, as it's "too new." I've researched this extensively online and find only conflicting information-- it's frustrating! I haven't read of any major risks in getting the vaccine, either, and frankly the regular flu vaccine is also "new" each year, as it is modified to address the changing strains of flu, so I'm not sure what the difference is in getting one and not the other. I'll ask my doctor again this coming Wednesday, at my appointment (it's been a few months so perhaps the practice's position has changed). Will definitely be interested to read comments from other pregnant women who've either received the vaccine, or decided not to.

Definitely getting the vaccine

It's great that you are posting about this topic because I too feel that there are conflicting opinions out there. I am in my 2nd trimester of pregnancy and both my OB and the High Risk OB where I had a recent ultrasound stressed the importance and safety of the H1N1 vaccine. They said that it's created by the FDA the exact same way the flu vaccine has been created but with a different strain. Also if the H1N1 outbreak would have happened a few weeks earlier last flu season they would have combined the H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccines. People are getting very sick from this and the risk of not getting it is much higher in my opinion. Now it's a matter of finding the vaccine!

My whole family is getting

My whole family is getting it. My son and I have asthma and our attacks are illness induced. A minor cold can set us back 4-6 weeks with breathing/respitory problems. We were told we HAD to get it due to this factor. My husband also asthma, though not as severe as ours, but he too is getting the vaccine. My daughter has nothing more than minor seasonal allergies, but again our pediatrician said we should all get the vaccine. We're all covered with the seasonal flu vaccine, but where we live (WI) it's still not readily available, at least until the middle of November is what they are saying and I'm worried about getting sick before we get it....with the flu or otherwise because even if you have a minor little cold they won't vaccinate at all. Yikes!

Get vaccinated

I am in my 36th week and just had the swine flu shot last week, with no side effects. Luckily, I was able to get it through work, I am a social worker for a homeless agency and though they got a limited amount I was top priority due to the pregnancy. I have also had my regular seasonal shot. My OB and the pediatricians in my area are stressing the importance of getting the H1N1 to not only protect me, but to protect the baby as well. With all the reports out I just couldn't take the risk of getting the swine flu. In fact the other day on the news the CDC was stating that those that are coming down with the flu actually have the 2009 swine flu and not the seasonal flu. Even the hospitals in my area (I live in Virginia outside of DC) will not allow anyone to visit the maternity ward, we are allowed one person to be with us throughout our whole stay, as long as that person does not have flu like symptoms. My husband will be the only one with me and I am desperately trying to find a clinic for him to get the H1NI vaccination.

We got it yesterday

We just got the shot yesterday... all three of us. At first I was adamant about NOT getting it, but after talking to my doc and almost everyone else about it, we decided to get it. I work at a TV station, so I hear all the fight over it, but basically it boiled down to the fact that getting the h1n1 flu was scarier than getting the shot! I'm just really lucky that there was a clinic that had the injectable vaccine since all three of us got that!

Health Dept

I went to the Health Dept and got mine because they were the only ones in the area who had them and they were giving them to pregnant women ONLY. You may want to look into your local health dept.

Probably not getting it
10/26/2009 at 3:38 pm
I'm 12 weeks pregnant and I have been going back and forth. If I were in your shoes I probably would because of your risks and stage of pregnancy. I'm more concerned about myself since I'm so early in my pregnancy. The recent articles I read stated that the peak of H1N1 season will be end of October to mid-November. Since that is pretty much here and will be over soon, I am now leaning towards not getting it. I never get the regular flu vaccine - pregnant or not and have had the flu once. I was horrible, but once in 20 something years I think are pretty good odds. My biggest concern with the vaccine is the effect on my baby - its unknown. Both H1N1 and the regular flu vaccine are not tested on pregnant women so we don't know long term effects.

We will be getting it as
10/26/2009 at 4:03 pm
We will be getting it as soon as it is available. My pediatrician recommended we wait until the non preservitavie H1N1 is available before Gregory gets it. The one that is out now has mercury in it and because of Gregory's pre existing seizure condition we are going to wait. Andrew will be getting it though!!

vaccine

I am looking forward to getting the H1N1 vaccine. Being a pharmacist I am around sick people every day and I have two kids under 3 who I don't want to infect! My kids will be getting vaccinated as well ASAP. I don't quite understand the paranoia about vaccines, due to my profession most likely. I got sucked into facebook discussions about this this weekend, with a family friend who thinks the H1N1 vaccine is a plot by the government. My thought is that there are a lot of data showing that vaccines are safe and effective. Show me the data (real, peer reviewed data, not by an "independent researcher") that vaccines are harmful. It makes me laugh that people consider Jenny McCarthy an expert on vaccines, over my years of pharmacy school! On a fun baby gear note they make these really cute signs that you can attach to your car seat, stroller etc... that say "hands off baby" and "wash hands before touching baby" (handsoffbaby.com-I think). The same family friend had a problem with those too! I think they are funny and it drives me nuts when strangers think they can walk up and touch your babies hands, similar to strangers thinking they can touch your pregnant belly : )

It's just a flu shot
10/26/2009 at 6:44 pm
Like SJ95, I too got sucked into facebook discussions about this. It's just a flu shot, like any other, just specific to the H1N1 strain. So, the risks are no different than the risks of a seasonal flu shot. If I could get it, I would. Though I'm not pregnant, I do have a health condition that could put me at risk of complications. Additionally, if I can get it for my 21 month old daughter, I will not hesitate. I say "if I can get it" because none of our doctors even have it yet.

Get it!

It so not worth the risk of getting the H1N1 flu! I don't know where someone heard the peak would be over by November because around here it just started! I have a friend whose work was infected and last Friday 2/3 of his office went home sick with the H1N1 flu! I just got my almost one year old daughter vaccinated this morning and we have not had any issues (We also were one of the last ones able to get it as they ran out while we were there). Pregnant women and children under 5 are the ones that have been showing the highest risk of having life threatening complications when infected with this strain of flu. Plus by getting it when you are pregnant you pass some of those antibodies to your unborn baby, therefore, giving them some resistance against it too! And as others have stated it is no different then the seasonal flu shot...they make it exactly the same way so there is no need for concern. I wish I was pregnant so I could get it too!

My mom has H1N1...
10/29/2009 at 3:53 pm
she was out of work for a week and went back today, although she still isn't 100% yet and still coughing a bit. The day after she started experienceing all the symptoms she went right in to get Tamiflu, just in time. That halted the symptoms before they could get really bad. She still got sick, although it wasn't as bad as it could have been! I don't know about other states but the flu AND cold season seems to have started very early in MN this year. Half my office (including me) has been out with colds the last few weeks. I would like to get the vaccine, although I am not in a high risk group so I think I will let others get it that need it more.

My 2 year old daughter has a severe egg also but her allergist just tested her with a little bit of the flu shot to see how she would react then gave it to in two separate doses on two separate days. She did just fine but if she were to get the H1N1 vaccine she would have to be retested
