Good news: I'm 25 weeks pregnant and still cancer free!

By Erin Zammett Ruddy on Friday, September 25, 8:23 am EDT

I just got my results from the blood test and…no sign of cancer. Woo-hoo! I’ve now been off Gleevec (the drug that has been keeping my CML in remission for the past eight years) since April 18th -- the day I ovulated. That means no treatment for over five months and no change. I am beyond thrilled. I am also not completely surprised given the success I had when I was pregnant with Alex.

But still…I do not take these happy moments for granted. I may even celebrate a little. Perhaps I’ll splurge and hit up Baskin-Robbins today. I get the results of my glucose test (the screening for gestational diabetes) later so I better do it soon just in case!

In other news, did you guys see this gigantic baby born in Indonesia? A 19 pounder.Thank God for C-sections!

Anyway, I just wanted to share the good news. Thanks for keeping me in your thoughts. Have a good weekend. I know I will!

Congratulations on your fantastic news! I just read your article in this month’s issue and I am so encouraged! I too had to go off of life saving medication to get pregnant, after a kidney transplant. I am happy to say that I am now 7 seven weeks pregnant and your story is what I needed to read today! I have been so nervous about the baby and my health that I haven’t been able to fully see the blessing that this baby is. Thank you so very much for telling your story because it has encouraged me more than you know! Congratulations again and you and your family will be in my prayers!

A friend just sent me an article you wrote and it couldn't have come at a better time. I have one daughter that is 2 years old and when she was 5 months old I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I am coming up on two years cancer free now but genetic testing has shown that I am positive for the dreaded "cancer gene." My husband and I really want to have a second child and everyone has an opinion about it. People think that I am being irresponsible by having another child that I could pass this on to and I can't help myself, my little Olivia would be such an amazing big sister and I have always dreamed of a big family. Both my grandmothers had breast cancer and my mother survived breast cancer ten years ago only to be diagnosed with ovarian cancer a couple months ago. The point is, we are all happy and living life. Despite the repeated battles with cancer we are trying to live life as normal and that includes having the family we always wanted. I know that if my kids have to deal with cancer in their life they will have better options for them than I had, I have to believe that for my sweet Olivia. I am thankful that you are speaking out that life keeps going after cancer. I have always tried to live life to the fullest even while getting chemo and enduring many painful surgeries, why should that stop now? Thank you!!

I know that you have stated before that you want your son to grow up with a sibling. Why didn't you consider adoption, knowing that you're putting yourself at risk everytime you go off your medication? There are thousands of poverty ridden, hungry, homeless children that would love to be a part of your family! If you have a third, would you ever consider this as a choice? Or do you only want biological children?
