Flu shot drama: Have you gotten one yet?

By Erin Zammett Ruddy on Monday, September 28, 8:28 am EDT

I was supposed to take Alex to have a flu shot on Friday but I got a call from his pediatrician’s office the night before telling me they ran out. My response: $%#!!! Seriously, I said, $%#!!! Then I got a little dramatic with the poor girl on the phone. I said, “Um, can you be sure you write in my son’s file that his mother has cancer and is six-and-a-half months pregnant and he absolutely NEEDS a flu shot the second the new batch comes in?” She put me on hold and the office manager come on to calm me down—and tell me that they should have more shots in mid October and I could call every few days to check in. Ugh, ugh, ugh.

I’m not normally panicked about this stuff. Last year I didn’t even get a flu shot. But things have changed since then. I’m off my treatment and pregnant, Alex is in school three days a week and, I’m not gonna lie, the whole swine flu debacle of last spring has got me a little freaked out (though Alex is just getting the regular flu shot, not H1N1…). I’m getting my shot through my OB next week but Alex needs a pediatric dose, which is not the kind they offer at CVS and other random places so I’m kind of at the mercy of the pediatrician’s office. And, in case you can’t tell, I’m kind of pissed. Especially since we’re getting on a germ-infested airplane on Wednesday (more about our trip later…).

How about you guys? Are you nervous about the flu this season? Are you getting the shot? Are your kids? Know of any secret places to get a pediatric dose?

Flu Shot MIA

Hi Erin! First off, I followed you in Glamour the first year you had your column about your CML. I'm so glad to have found you doing well and appearing in Parenting! I'm getting my flu shot today, but my pediatrician's office doesn't even have the flu shots in for kids under 3 yet (my daughter is 20 months). Needless to say, I'm quite peeved. And no, they can't tell me when they'll have them in. Grrr.

You played the cancer card, and it's not really about you, it's about something no one can get? Ooof-dah. Being in school will do great things for A's tolerence. He'll be fine.

Hi Erin, My kids (9 months and 7 years old) got their flu shots this past weekend. This is the first time for my 7 year old, with all the talk of the flu and H1N1 flu, I got a little scared and rush them off to get their shots. My husband and I are getting them this week as well. Thankfully the pediatrician had them in stock b/c if not I think like you I would have $%#$%@ somebody...lol..

Is Alex allergic to eggs?

Is Alex allergic to eggs? If so, he can't get the flu shot anyway:(

I'm on the fence...

If I were pregnant and off cancer meds, I would be very upset at the doctor! Alex needs a flu shot, I might even run next door and ask the neighbors to get one, too. However, I'm not sure if my family needs one. We had last year's flu and it was terrible! My sweet little nine month old puked for 18 hours and didn't eat for three days. Not to mention how sick my hubby and I were from it. (Lost 10 pounds in four days!) But we got through it, just like you'd get through a cold. It seems a bit extreme for us to get one.

Go elsewhere

The same thing happened to my 2 year old last year when I was pregnant. I just called another doctor's office and they gave my daughter her flu shot. Clinics cannot refuse service so there's no reason you can't go to another clinic that still have some vaccinations left. give it a try, especially since you're going on a plane!!

I understand your concerns

I understand your concerns completely. You may want to try one of walk-in medical clinics. With most medical insurances it does cost more than a visit to your regular doctors, but they may be able to give Alex the shot.

Flu Shots

I'm definately concerned about the flu this season, although my children are not in school. However, both of them take classes with other children, so they do get exposed. My pediatrician's office does a flu clinic that you have to sign up for like a month in advance and then they order enough for the flu clinic plus extra. I got mine from my doctor's office. Do you have any urgent cares near you? Many of them offer flu shots and have children's doses. Also, many stores with pharmacies often do flu clinics and will have pediatric doses then.

I would stick to getting the flu vaccine from a peditrician - if Alex is under three, he can get the preservative free one. We all got ours -including my grandson who is 16 months old. If you can prevent something or lessen the serverity of it, why not?

Kelly, Alex is allergic to eggs! I didn't know there was an issue. I'll have to look into it, thanks for the head's up! —E

Yea, all forms of the flu
9/28/2009 at 3:38 pm
Yea, all forms of the flu vaccine contain egg protein. I'm a pharmacist and had to become certified this year to administer flu shots. Egg allergy is one of the questions on the form you have to fill out before getting the shot. I've been reading your blog for years and feel like I know your family personally! My first thought when I read today's entry was "Alex can't have a flu shot, he's allergic to eggs!!!" Hope you all stay healthy this winter!

Erin-I believe since Alex is allergic to eggs then he cannot get the Flu Mist but he is able to get the Flu Shot. Same thing just the mist goes into the nose instead of the shot plus you do have to be a certain age to get the flu mist. I did get my 5 year old and 3.5 year the Flu Mist this year for the first time EVER. I did it for a couple of reasons: my 5 year old is in Kindergarten this year, the hype about the flu season ahead, and I also have a 5 month old baby that will not be getting the flu shot so I want to try and protect her if at all possible. I'm even getting a flu shot next week for the first time in years and that is also because of the baby. I'm on the fence about the H1N1 vaccine. All 3 times that I was pregnant I did not get a flu shot.

I understand your frustration, but I hope you were not too mean to the person on the phone. It's unlikely that it is her fault that the office ran out of shots. Seems like Alex may not have been able to get the shot that day anyway due to his allergies.

That stinks!! I know the extra worrying is not needed. Good luck resolving the issue and I will hope really super good thoughts that your fam can make it through this winter without getting the flu!

I wasn't really mean!
9/28/2009 at 8:10 pm
Guess I made it sound a little more dramatic than I needed to....I wasn't mean to the woman on the phone at all, I just told her my situation and made it clear that I was concerned and that I wanted a flu shot as soon as it was available. And I have no apologies for that. I'm sure they've heard way worse from parents....

I heard the same exact thing
9/28/2009 at 8:25 pm
I heard the same exact thing today...pediatric's office was out of the flu shot and so a mom had to take her kids to Walgreen's to get it. That really sucks! I am definitely getting the flu shot this year. I never have before but I just decided to get it since I work in the healthcare industry.

My daughter already has the Flu.
9/29/2009 at 12:52 pm
Funny that you wrote about this... I spent Monday morning at my peditrian with my 17 month old daughter getting her tested for the Flu. )which she tested positive for.) We planned on getting the flu shot for her, but our ped also, didn't have the shots available yet. So instead, she beat them to the punch. We are still waiting to give her the Tamaflu because half of the pharmacies by us didn't have any in stock and had to order it! It isn't even flu season yet! So, after my day yesterday, my vote is if Alex can get it, get it. If he can't because of his allergies, you and Nick should as a preventative.... Also, my ped office was a MAD house. Tons of kids with colds being screened and lots of people calling about the flu shots!

Oh Erin, I feel your pain! I have an autoimmune disease, 11 weeks preggers and am lucky enough to be in the 5% of people who flare in pregnancy and now on Prednisone... no immune system with a two-year-old in flu season. UGH!

Please be patient....
10/13/2009 at 10:03 pm
...this is not a shortage....the offices are just slow getting the serum in because there's been a run on the vaccines (because of all the H1N1 hype). It is my understanding that there will be plenty to go around - people just have to be patient. The drug companies are behind because they are now mass producing the H1N1 vaccine. They are having a hard time keeping pace with the windfall of people getting vaccinated this season. AGAIN, this is not a shortage - just a DELAY. Most offices are expecting more at the end of the month. Flu season usually isn't in full swing until after January. Everyone needs to calm down, stop creating panic and be patient!

Out of vaccine
10/14/2009 at 4:13 pm
I am really ticked with my pediatrician's office. Both my 3 year old and 11 month old went for their flu shot on septmeber 2nd. I scheduled another appointment for the 11 month old to get the booster 30 days later. Now I'm told they are out of vaccine. I have a friend who said her Dr. earmarks the follow-up dose for the booster at the time the first shot is given. This makes great sense to me. Here I try to be on top of the and am left with an 11 month old who isn't protected. I am really angry!!
