Dress That Bump! (And back away from the MuuMuu)

By Taylor Newman on Tuesday, November 3, 11:03 am EST

Figuring out what to wear through the physical changes of pregnancy has been a fun challenge, and was not something I considered before actually contending with it. From the near-immediate thickening around my waistline to this past week or two during which my bump has gone from noticeable to “HUGE” (that quote’s courtesy of my mom), I’ve tried to implement some creativity to look put-together and keep myself physically comfortable -- I’ve shelved my pumps for now and am rocking kitten heels and flats -- without spending a ton of cash on a whole new wardrobe I’ll never wear again. Plus, let’s be honest: maternity clothes, however cute, are not exactly exciting.

I’d already bought my wedding dress when I found out I was pregnant. I was definitely concerned it wouldn’t fit on the big day, and that I’d end up walking down the aisle in stretch pants or a muumuu. I did have to get the dress taken out a bit (hello, instant boob job), and although my belly was just beginning to pooch, it looked more like gas at that point than a baby in the making; I walked down the aisle in style, albeit with a little extra glow.

Though far from my usual look (tight jeans, pencil skirts), I embraced the summer’s bohemian dress trend and spent the warmer months and much of the fall in a brightly colored, empire-waist dress from Target, topped with a cardigan for work. I alternated this getup with some black yoga pants and loose-fitting tops. It was basically a three-outfit rotation, but it did the job.

I finally bit the bullet at four and a half months and bought some real maternity corduroys and a couple of maternity t-shirts from H&M (good stuff there, FYI), as well as some black leggings and long shirts. I’m still going strong on these items now. I also bought a Pea in a Pod dress second-hand (only $20!) at a shop here in Brooklyn (Still Hip Brooklyn) for the wedding I recently attended; I love it and have been wearing it all the time, dressed up and down.

6 Month Belly
That's me wearing the all-the-time dress at an art opening
this past weekend, with my husband Aaron.

As I said, my belly’s really ballooned recently, and I’m not due until mid-February! I’m starting to wonder if I’ll land in muumuus after all.

How does winter maternity wear work? What have you been wearing, and what have your style-survival strategies been? Come on now, give ‘em up!

Winter wear

By the time winter hits, you're going to be so pregnant that the season won't matter - your "internal heater" will keep you plenty toasty! :) Seriously, I was walking around in short-sleeve shirts in February and was still burning up. I think you can continue what you're wearing and be fine...

Check craigslist.com for

Check craigslist.com for women giving away maternity clothes or selling them for low prices. And continue wearing stuff you have like tights in a bigger size, cardigans over a longer maternity shirt, etc.

Hi Becmar-- that's so funny; I actually have a friend who had a baby at about the same time last year, and she said that she didn't even need a winter coat. Sounds like a pregnancy perk to me! Thanks for the tip, Colleen-- I love craigslist. I've gotten some amazing deals on whole bags of baby clothes. I think moms in particular (especially in NYC where living spaces are tiny) are more than happy to clear out whatever they (or their little ones) aren't using any more. They don't seem to care so much about the price. Thank you both for the insight and suggestions! <3

Cardigans work great
11/3/2009 at 3:50 pm
I had my baby at the end of January this year, and I found that cardigans worked great. I was able to buy a couple of regular cardigans slightly larger and just keep the bottom buttons open. I bought a couple of maternity t-shirts to wear under them. It's the pants you really can't work around, you have to have maternity pants. Motherhood has some pretty cheap.

Good job saving money

It sounds like you are handling maternity clothes shopping in stride. Good idea scouring Target and secondhand stores. It seems a shame to spend a lot of money on clothes you'll be able to wear less than a year.

Nursing Wear
11/4/2009 at 12:51 pm
Wait until you need to find a nursing wardrobe! That was the real shock to me, and something no one warns you about. Some advice: it may take a few months to get back to your old skinny self--think about the nursing aspect when choosing maternity wear and it can do double duty. A lot of my tops/dresses that worked well for the belly, didn't allow me to get baby to the boobs. Granted, there are companies out there for nursing clothes, but I found they were really too expensive for me. Your gray dress looks fabulous!

Don't buy a maternity coat!

I gave birth in Nov. 2008 in Michigan and made do with my regular winter coats. Many fit over my belly (and I was all belly, so much so that I'm surprised I didn't tip over). If they didn't button/zip over the bump, I just left them open and I was fine. As many have said, you'll be plenty warm from your interior furnace!
