Baby names: What’s your favorite girl name?

By Erin Zammett Ruddy on Friday, October 16, 10:43 am EDT

As many of you pointed out, something I need to add to my to-do list is finding a name for the baby. At this point in my pregnancy with Alex, we had narrowed it down to three names: Christopher, Timothy or Griffin. Of course none of those became his name but at least we had some options.

So far I got nada for numero dos. Well, that’s not entirely true. I do like Charlotte, which has a lot of meaning to me. My Grandma Ruth (who was born and bred in New York) was obsessed with the south and southern culture and gave my sisters and I each a southern alter-ego. Mine was Charlotte. My grandma called herself Mrs. Peach and every summer when she’d come live with us Charlotte and Mrs. Peach would host cooking shows together. Those are some of my best memories and I think it would be a cool name for a little girl and a nice way to honor my grandma who died six years ago. But I don’t know….

Nick likes Emily and I do too but the night before he told me that, my sister, Meghan, told me she liked that name for her own little girl (someday…she isn’t married or planning to have kids any time soon). And so I guess we have to stay away from that one, huh? There is also a cool family name that I love—it’s my Grandma Adele’s maiden name—but I don’t even want to mention it because then I think I’ll chicken out since it’s a bit “out there” and I tend to be more traditional. My Grandma Del died three days before Alex was born and she and I shared a birthday and were very close so I’d really like to incorporate her name in some way. Adele could make a pretty middle name….

Bottom line: I need to do some research. This is really the first time I’ve sat down and thought about a name. And I am so bad with making decisions that I worry this baby could leave the hospital as "Baby Girl Ruddy." It’s harder to name a girl than a boy, isn’t it? Where did you guys find your girl names? What are they? (Don’t worry, I won’t steal them!)

Charlotte Adele Ruddy. Sniff. I love it. I think you have your answers. We are looking for boy names in baby books. I like Isaac and Joshua and other traditional ones. My husband doesn't like those but he's not offering any suggestions. The name books seem to have a lot of extra names in them so you have to weed through!

I agree...girl names are WAY harder than boy names. I have so many boy names picked out and then when it comes to girls, I draw a blank. I look at the credits after a movie is over or at last names I see in magazines, etc. You can get some pretty cool names you may never have thought of yet. I LOVE the name Griffin by the way...but my friend named her boy that. Also, isn't it hard not to want to name your girl Emily, even though your sister likes it? I mean, I'd want to tell people what the name is just to claim it. But then again, I prefer it be a surprise for when the little one comes. Good luck! I really like Charlotte by the way. A great name for a little girl, or a grown woman she becomes.

I like Charlotte too. We had a girl name and a boy name picked out when I was pregnant. We had a boy, Xavier. And if we ever have a girl she will be named Evelyn. No reason in particular....we just really like it. I guess I like "old lady names" Because I also like Adelaide and Evangeline.

Girl Names
10/16/2009 at 11:16 am
My husband and I had a horrible time deciding on a girl name. We both had names we loved but couldn't agree. When she was born none of the names we liked fit and we ended up naming her Lillyan Marie. And now I'm pregant with #2 and of course we have a boy name picked out already only my instinct tells me it's another girl. So back to the drawing board and hoping we can figure out another girl name. I think half of the problem for us is we have both worked as restaurant managers and have had so many employees that too many female names are associated with them. Boys don't seem to have the same effect as girl names do.

Erin, I found it so much
10/16/2009 at 11:53 am
Erin, I found it so much harder to come up with names for boys. I wanted a strong name that wasn't too common. I am not a fan of common names, and therefore, do not think you should name your daughter Emily. She will be one of many Emilys in her class, and I truly believe that a name can affect a personality. That being said, I like Charlotte (not as common as Emily but still popular) Adele. Or better yet, Adele Ruth. If you wanted something a little more common, you could call her Ady, ellie, or ella.

I wouldn't go with Charlotte Adele
10/16/2009 at 12:08 pm
...because her initials would be CAR. (but - I do love the names!) My grandmother and I also shared a birthday, and I'm very disappointed that my husband vetoed the name I desperately wanted for our little girl: Lanie. Grandma's name was Lorraine and while I couldn't go quite that "old lady", I thought Lanie had a similar enough sound. Hubby hated it, though. Boo.

I actually love the name Elaine and nickname Lanie. But our last name is Ruddy so it's hard to have names that end in the y sound....If it weren't, Alex would definitely have been Rory. But can you imagine Rory Ruddy? And what if he couldn't say his Rs??!!

My daughter's name is Meadow and I love it because no one else has it. There are so many Lilys, Sophias, and Hannahs which were my other picks so I'm glad I didn't choose any of them. I am having a boy this time but if I had a girl I wanted to name her Quinn or Regan.

I love the name Charlotte Adele, that is beautiful. The best part is that every other little girl in her class won't also have the same name. If I ever have a little girl I want to name her Isla Kathryn. I that it would go lovely with my son's name Ian Douglas.

I have an 8 month-old girl, and my husband and I had a hard time picking a name. Most of my ideas came from my 7 year-old neice. She was so excited to finally have a girl cousin that everytime I saw her she had another two or three ideas for me. I wound up going with one of her choices - Isabella Grace.

I love the name Charlotte! My husband and I just had a baby girl and we named her Lucy Marion...Lucy because my husband really loved it, and Marion is my grandmother's first name. I love the old fashioned names and how they're coming back. Plus, not too many people have the name Charlotte nowadays.

I love the name Charlotte. In fact I was planning to use that if I happen to have a girl instead of a boy. If it is a boy it will be Charles August (after my grandfather, and August because my grandpa and I share an August birthday). If it is a girl and I name her Charlotte I can still call her Charlie which I love. Who cares about initials? My initials spell KAT and I have never had a problem with that.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the name Charlotte. I also really like the name Charlotte Adele Ruddy... I think it flows nicely. And I'm seriously all about names with meaning, so I love that her name has a story behind it. I feel like naming a girl is easier because there are so many options! There are not a lot of boys names that I love... Henry is the only one I love (I also grew up on a Henry Street, and my parents still live there - too weird?).

Teacher viewpoint
10/16/2009 at 4:45 pm
From a teacher perspective, I've noticed several things about names. 1. Parents pick unisex names. Sometimes you don't know if the child is a boy or a girl until the child shows up. (I have students of both sexes with the names Taylor and Morgan, and it gets confusing--plus they seem to be embarrassed they have a 'name of the opposite sex.') 2. Spelling. Parents pick an unusual spelling of the name, and then the child constantly has to spell his/her name. I don't know how many different versions of Katie/Katey/Katy/Catey/Catee, Allison/Alison/Allyson/Allisyn, Caitlin/Kaitlyn/Kaitlynne/Katelyn, and Mackenzie/McKenzie/Mackenzee I've had. The kids seem to hate the complication of having to constantly spell and correct the spelling of their names. 3. Nicknames. Kids can be cruel. See if the name rhymes with anything that can bad or if the name can easily be turned into a joke or something. (maybe like Fatty Patty, even if she isn't fat!) Just observations and seeing it from a junior high point of view, which can be the most devastating years. I hope you find a name you both like, and it 'fits' your little girl when she arrives:) Good Luck!

stick with A names?
10/16/2009 at 8:00 pm
I was sure my 2nd was a boy, but 3 days before we had her I freaked out and found a girl name. I ended up checking a name website that had common names of siblings. That is how we found Ava, our first is named Aidan. Both very popular but we loved them both! Only trouble now is that we feel like we need an "A" name for #3 : )

Also loving Charlotte
10/16/2009 at 10:36 pm
I think it's a beautiful name! And not too common, a log of old-time names are making a comeback and I've heard of so many Stellas and Sophies. I like Adele, too. I also like Adele Charlotte! I tend to have that problem. Sabrina's middle name is Willa, and sometimes I wonder if she should have been Willa Sabrina. But then again, she is SUCH a Sabrina. I still remember reading the post you did over at Glamour about Alex's name.

We were actually considering
10/17/2009 at 2:31 am
We were actually considering the name Charlotte...but we are such Sex and the City addicts, it kind of killed it! lol We wound up with Alayna, which we love and we went A-Z on babynames.com for and entire day and ended up with Alayna...I was kind of mad! We went back and forth about her middle name, Carlize (pronounced Car-lease-which I guess could make her a target at school?!?!?!) We love it though. I came up with it because Carlos is my husband's middle name and his father's name. Alayna Carlize Rivas we love her so! Feel free to steal! lol your family names are beautiful as well! By the way, she has just turned 2 on Sept. 7th really close to your son I believe and she points to her nose and says, "Ah-lay-na!" So sweet to see she loves her name!

I know you love your sister
10/17/2009 at 11:15 pm
I know you love your sister dearly, but like you said, she isn't married or planning on having kids anytime soon. If Emily is a name you both like, then use it. She may not even like it or her future husband might not like it either. If it's the name you both want, don't NOT use it because she MAY use it in the future. With that being said, I am so so on Charlotte but it has a lot of meaning to you. I love Adele and even if you used that as a first name there are lots of fun nicknames. :)

I vote for Charlotte Peach!
10/18/2009 at 1:17 am
I vote for Charlotte Peach! I've always had the worst time trying to think of girl names because I DON'T like traditional or common girl names. I never found one that stuck with me until my husband and I were discussing names for our son, Jude (yes, after the Beatles song), that I found Ellison. It's his grandfather's first name, but I love it for a girl. For the middle name I'll probably pick either Aurora (from a favorite movie), or Mae, which is my grandma's middle name. Hopefully we don't have more than one girl, or I'll be screwed!

10/18/2009 at 10:12 am
We had our girl name picked out before our boy name, lol. I love the idea of honoring your grandmother. We had Adeline Grace (Grace was my grandmothers middle name) picked out and went with Anderson Michael for our son. I work in a law enforcement field so I see lots of odd names and figuring out how to spell them or pronounce them is a job in its self. I agree with the teachers perspective, I can understand wanting your child to stick out, but I can't tell you how many times I have had to send back a certificate, award, or formal documentation b/c my name is spelled differently. Best of luck!

In Israel, many leave the hospital w/unnamed babies;girls are named in synagogue and boys at their circumcision ceremony. First, for alliteration, consider a 3-syllable name;make Adele into Adela. As I mentioned, there are beautiful Hebrew names: Abigail, Elana, Ariella. Read the story of Abigail, King David's wife-a very strong personality! Feel good! Lauren Adilev

We are currently *trying* to
10/19/2009 at 1:22 pm
We are currently *trying* to get pregnant and so the hubs and I are debating names. There will be no debate for a girl -- she will be called Daisy June. Daisy because Daisies are a reoccuring motif in my life AND my husband proposed to me in a field of daisies. June for my Nana and the hubs has a Nana called June too, so that works out nicely and June is a great joining name. We disagree on a boy's name -- I had always thought that our boy would be called Cash Henry. Cash after Johnny Cash and Henry is my maiden name. My husband and parents have no relationship so the hubs put the kabosh on Henry. Really bums me out. You can probably tell that I like names that have a sentimental value to them -- so I definitely think Charlotte is the way to go -- also love Peach as the middle name, so sweet for a little girl.

Response to September Article
10/19/2009 at 2:12 pm
I just had to post a response to the article that was featured in the September edition of Parenting in response to the person who chastised you for getting pregnant again. I am so happy for you, and hope that the last few weeks of this pregnancy go by smoothly for you. I experienced several of the same comments from people, both close to me as well as complete strangers when I became pregnant for the fifth time early last year. While I did not have cancer, I had experienced three consecutive losses and only had one living child. My living child was almost four, and I had been pregnant three times prior to becoming pregnant with baby number five in two and a half years. My first loss was a fullterm stillbirth at 39 weeks and 2 days as a result of a cord accident, and my next two losses were first trimester miscarriages. In addition to several losses, I was diagnosed with a blood clotting disorder which required that I take blood thinners via an injection several times per day to prevent blood clots during pregnancy. I am happy to say I now have a healthy ten month old and my husband and I are considering becoming pregnant again in the next two to three years. Sometimes the longest journeys are the most rewarding. I wish you luck in this pregnancy and send positive vibes for you to remain cancer free and healthy for many years to come.

Erin, I wanted so much to name my daughter Charlotte, but my hubby nixed it. So hard to come up with names you both like. I love the combo of Charlotte Adele...or Adele Charlotte! I agree with the teacher: no unisex names, no unusual spellings. I personally like nothing too trendy as it dates you (e.g., all Linda's are in their 50's). Family names are so meaningful. Can't go wrong with a classic. P.S. Loved your Glamour blog and am so happy I found you here!

Im thinking of having my 1st next year, but ive had vague names picked out my whole life, my girl would be Layla Maggie-Anne. And my son would be Finley Andrew Ross, can you tell im Scottish? hehe. And the middle names are all close family members. Charlotte is the most common name in my family, and it was meant to be my name, as it is my mums middle name, and my gran and great grans name. But it just doesnt do it for me, my gran got called Chatty as short for Charlotte and that was horrible. But some little girls re adorable with it. My other favourite girls names are Cyan, Eithne, Mercy, Sailor and Willow happy choosing!

I love the name Charlotte Adele - especially since there is meaning behind it. My husband and I had a boy name picked out until I had my 20 week ultrasound and found out we were having a girl. We spent weeks throwing out different names until we bought a baby book and spent a couple days going letter by letter (each taking turns so it didn't become too personal with a name). I love the name Isabella but didn't think it would fit with our last name. I fell in love with the middle name Grace and after that we found ourselves going back time and again to Madison. We tried it out for a week at home, talking to Madison, our little Maddie. And it just felt right. I can't imagine our little girl with any other name.

Erin, Emily is a very common name and I wouldn't use that. I do like Charlotte Adele and it means a lot to you. You can call her Char and I think that is cute. I picked a unisex name for my baby. Devan Layne if it was a girl and Devin Laine if it was a boy. My husband didn't like the name at first, but he got over it. IF I have another one (doubt it as we currently also have 3 foster kids) I would name it Ryan no matter if it was a boy or girl, after my brother who passed. You want her to have a unique name, but nothing too out there. When exploring a name - think of the way that kids are and how they like to pick on each other. Also - google the name. Apparently there is a porn star named Devan Layne but the spelling is different - I just hope that she never thinks we named her after a porn star. Good luck!
