Baby on Board: Traveling While Pregnant

By Taylor Newman on Thursday, October 29, 10:44 am EDT

We attended a wedding a few weekends ago, and although I have a blood clot history, my doctor gave me clearance to travel. He told me not to miss a dose of blood thinners -- I give myself daily shots -- on the days I’d be traveling, and that it’d be smart to get up and walk around on the plane throughout the flight. Easy enough, right?

I lucked out on the flight to Washington, which was staffed by three male flight attendants who took one look at my basketball-belly and waived the ludicrous fee for the (questionable) entrées on board. On the flight back, however, I struck out -- the flight attendant did not appreciate my pacing up and down the aisle and doing a triangle pose beside my seat. She was not in the least bit sympathetic to my condition. Between two long flights, car rental coordination, socializing in Seattle, two six-hour drives, a wedding, and a raucous party, I was exhausted. I gave up on in-flight exercise and I paid $15 for a sad little salad and some crackers. And I got sick immediately after our trip. Pregnant women may be cleared for air travel, but…it might not be a pleasant experience.

It was a fun adventure nonetheless. We stayed with friends in Seattle upon arrival and explored a bit the following morning. I was smitten. Seattle is clean! The coffee is great! The neighborhoods are cool; regular people have houses, yards, and gardens, and yet it still feels urban! I was drinking the Kool Aid, for sure.

We then drove to a breathtaking area just past the Cascades, and spent two days attending wedding-related activities stocked with delicious food and a huge collection of friends from both the West coast and NYC. The ceremony was lovely, and the party was fantastic. We danced all night. I am a big believer in dancing while pregnant. I’m doing a lot of it. My baby’s doing a lot of it, too! (People also love watching pregnant ladies getting down on the dance floor. Why is that?)

So, yes, the travel itself was exhausting, and yes, I did get a head cold. No clots, but I did have a pregnancy-induced charlie horse that had me screaming for mercy in bed early that Sunday morning. I’m glad we went, but we decided that we’re going to stay home for the holidays -- no more travel ‘til this kid and I are physically separate people -- which sounds like just the ticket.

So, got any good pregnant travel stories? Was traveling while pregnant, for you, a breeze, or a nightmare? Do tell.

Not kids for me, yet, but I share your love for Seattle! Just returned from visiting a friend out there and I, too, drank the kool-aid. Looking forward to reading more great posts from you and Erin!

The Caribbean at 6 Months Preg.

We went to Dominica to see my in-laws when I was 6 months pregnant, and it was heaven! The plane ride was a little nauseating at times, but thankfully everyone let me cut in line for the bathroom! And I brought tons of my own food (which no one confiscated at security), so that helped, too. The worst was driving around the bumpy, rainforest roads that cover the island. My poor bladder... But it was totally worth it to breathe all that fresh mountain air and feel weightless, floating in the Caribbean! Plus, I'm now convinced that bikinis are the most-PERFECT maternity clothes...

I flew from Houston to San Diego in a tiny plane at about 16 weeks early in the morning and had to use one of those wonderful bags in the seat back pocket. Not my finest 3 hours.

I hated it

I had to travel from Philly to Denver for work when I was 5 1/2 months pregnant. I also have a blood-clot history, so I know all about the daily shots. The flight attendants were okay with my moving around, I simply kept going to the bathroom every hour. But it was absolutely exhausting, and I made sure there was no more traveling for me during my pregnancy. Walking though the airport was tiring enough - but I did get to go into the "special assistance" security line and get through really fast!

I never understood why women

I never understood why women aren't more sympathetic towards pregnant women! Jealousy I guess I mean c'mon you are growing a person for goodness sakes! At least the males understood and took good care of you!!! I was 30 weeks and traveled from Oregon to New York to have my daughter up there. I was by myself the whole time and cried most of the way (kind of a long story). I needed a seat belt extension...I mean obviously right??? The flight attendants seemed so off put by my asking for that.....they really need some training on common decency! Anyways 12 hours and 3 flights later I made it and could barely walk because my ankles swelled so much! Ohhh Never Again!

Gabrielle's comment is pathetic. Some people obviously have a lot of anger and nothing to do on a Friday night. Sad!!!! Your blog is so fun Taylor, and you are a cutie. Ignore the jealous web spammers, and keep writing about your pregnancy!!!!!

About 10 Days ago we just got back from an emergency trip to Ohio from North Carolina, and im 26 weeks pregnant with identical twin boys, with high blood pressure and now i found out IUGR, and im in the hospital i was just admitted yesterday. But anyways the moral of the story is that traveling didnt put me here it just made me feel awful afterwards. i felt fine on the 12 hour ride there but afterwards i was kinda sore, then got the slight head cold, but got scared when i thought i was going into labor, then when we got home on a monday morning i went to the doctors tuesday and was told no more. lol so yeah i know what you mean, it was awful, but a wierd adventure at the same time.

Oh yes, I went to Ireland

Oh yes, I went to Ireland from San Francisco, CA when I was 4 months pregnant (11 hour flight). Thankfully being my first I was just barely showing so size wise wasn't an issue. My husband and I were traveling with friends to attend a wedding in Scotland, so we booked a red eye flight both ways in the hope of sleeping...this of course was before I found out I was pregnant. Needless to say they all took sleeping pills and dozed off while I "tried" to sleep. I also was told to get up every couple hours and walk around or stretch, so I had to set an alarm in case I did fall asleep. I never felt so tired in my life (well until my daughter was born, but that is different reason!). I got the look when asking for water...I can't help that the little containers they gave me were only 6 ounces and they kept only bringing me one at a time. On the way home I got smart and asked for 5 at once!
