Things to Do This Summer

By Notes From the Trenches on Tuesday, April 29, 9:41 am EDT

My 10 year old son began working on a list of things he wants to do this summer.  He said that he always thinks he will have plenty of time to do all the things he wants, but then suddenly summer is over and he never gets around to it.

I don't have the heart to tell him that it is called life.

Instead, I embraced his list making, and we have been making a family list of things to do this summer.  A list that is ambitiously titled "101 Things To Do This Summer", even though we haven't listed that many yet.

1. Make a dandelion crown
2. Eat an ice cream sundae for dinner
3. Eat an ice cream sundae for lunch
4. Eat an ice cream sundae for breakfast
5. Fly a kite
6. Build a sandcastle at the beach
7. Stay at the beach long enough to watch the waves take it away
8. Sleep outside in a tent
9. Dance outside after dark holding sparklers in each hand
10. Roll down a steep grassy hill
11. Skip rocks in the river
12. Go to a drive-in movie theater
13. Have a real picnic, complete with picnic basket and blanket
14. Play hopscotch
15. Spin around, on a sunny day, outside in the grass, until you fall down
16. Learn to whistle through a blade of grass
17. Ride a bike with no hands
18. Lay in the grass and find shapes in the clouds
19. Make up a board game and play it
20. Run through the sprinkler
21. Pick blueberries
22. Bake something and bring it to our neighbor
23. Plant some new flowers
24. Swing high on a swing
25. Try some new exotic fruit at the grocery store
26. Plant a small garden
27. Skip, in public, for no reason
28. Teach or learn jumprope songs
29. Write a message in a bottle
30. Climb a tree

So what would be on your list?

1.) Attend our family reunion picnic which I've been saying for 5 years that I'll eventually attend 2.) Welcome my new niece into the family 3.) Watch my husband teach my son to fish 4.) Take my son on his first official camping trip 5.) Actually complete more than one thing on my "spring cleaning" list 6.) Wear suncreen everyday, and remind everyone I know to do the same 7.) Make sure my son has as much fun this summer as I did as a child on my summer vacations 8.) Thank my mom for making my summer vacations so much fun

I just had my first child at 30 years old. I always said that I look forward to seeing the world through her eyes. As adults we tend to forget the simple pleasures in life. Your post reminded me of childhood summers and makes me look forward to the ones with my daughter even more!! Thanks!

I love your list. It sounds like you will have a lovely summer. Just make sure they don't keep slamming that porch door!

This is a great idea! And I'll bet he accomplishes a whole lot more by making his list. I'm going to do this with my kids this weekend! (or maybe next hum...dang...there goes life getting away from me again).

Got the Playset
4/29/2008 at 5:24 pm
We decided what we're doing this summer with a trip to Sam's Club. We got the crazy big playset and i think my summer plans are to try to get it built before the fall!
You can check it out on my blog at TheRogueParent.com along with reviews of all the playsets I looked at. I'm also going to keep you in the loop about how long it takes to put together.
Wish me luck!

On MY list . .

(OK, I'm a 10 year old boy at heart) is Catching fireflies; Making a campfire in the yard; cooking hotdogs and s'mores over said campfire; Catching tadpoles, toads and frogs. Of course we'll release all the above critters, despite my 3-year-old's tears. Now to build an outdoor fireplace with all the rocks we have here . . .

Love your list, Chris. It was very timely too, because just yesterday I was making a list of my own...basically all the "stuff" I need to get done this summer, deep cleaning, organizing, etc, etc. Nothing fun or relational was on my list. I'm going to make a new one now!! Thanks.

Great!

I love the idea of a list. I'm just trying to decide whether to make it before or after the move-for fear of it getting lost... Also, darn your kids for having birthdays because I just can't keep track of them anymore! Silly I know, but I thought I had a pretty good grasp of your older boys until this recent round of birthdays...

Ice cream

My sister's family celebrates National Ice Cream Day by eating ice cream for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You could take care of #2-4 in one day (July 20).

I love

I love that none of the things on your son's list are big expensive things. No trips to DisneyWorld or major league baseball games or any of those things. You're doing well Chris! :D

Becoming 6 too many!

This summer is looking to be CRAZY with a new baby expected around the 4th of July. My plan is to survive. :-) And take the kids to the local pool in the evenings when it isn't so crowded and I'll be able to keep better track of the children.

Memories
5/1/2008 at 6:44 pm
Hi, Number 12 on your list brought back many memories. I remember going to the Drive-In-Movies as a youngster, in fact the very first movie we ever saw there was " The Singing Nun". It was always an inexpensive way for a family to enjoy the pictures. When I got a bit older I was even allowed to go along with our local youth group run by our local minister. Unfortunately there are no Drive-In-Movie theatres left here in Australia, they seemed to go out of vogue, I guess with the introduction of Videos and DVD's and being able to buy any movie you wish these days and Home Theatre set ups they were no longer patronised. I'd love to come and join you when you start your list, I may be 50 but I guess there is a 10 year old still lurking in there some where. Mind you I'm also a daily list writer too. Take Care and Enjoy Summer as we go into what will hopefully be a wet winter. Lots of Love Carolynn :-)

Move back to my hometown and show my son all the fun things to do there.

Sounds like fun

Aww...I wish I were a kid again. To have 3 free months with no responisibilities or deadlines. That is a great list. I may just have to make time for some of that this summer.
