Slug Bug: The Official Rules (Oh Yes, They’re Official)

By Rocks In My Dryer on Monday, June 8, 12:07 pm EDT

WHEREAS it has been affirmed that we don’t generally condone violence in this family, and

WHEREAS it has also been acknowledged that in excess of 66% of this family is male, and that’s a lot of testosterone in the backseat, and

WHEREAS your mother knows a thing or two about picking her battles, and

WHEREAS your mother has duly observed her children’s insistence on the playing of this game and has duly worn herself out with the refereeing,

It is herein set forth, on this eighth day of June, Two Thousand and Nine, the official rules of the backseat game of Slug Bug, which shall be fully and legally binding until further notice; in other words, I’m the mom and I said so.

Let it be known that Slug Bug, for the uninitiated, is the game of riding in the car and noticing a Volkswagen Beetle, then calling out “SLUG BUG!” and slugging your neighbor in the upper arm. This bizarre recreational activity shall only be undertaken with the following regulations in place:

1. The first person to see the Slug Bug gets to call it and deliver the ensuing slug.

2. If one calls out a Slug Bug that was previously called out by a fellow backseat passenger, one must humbly submit oneself to two slugs from said passenger, as penance.

3. If you complain that you didn’t hear the Slug Bug so you couldn’t possibly have known it was already claimed, be advised that your mother will tell you to do a better job of cleaning out your ears.

4. In the event you call a Slug Bug, you must deliver the ensuing slug within five seconds, or you have entirely, fully forfeited all rights to claiming the Slug Bug. Your fellow passenger has full rights to attempt to evade your slug, and if he manages to do so, you are forthwith duly obligated to acknowledge your defeat and forfeit your slug; in your own fine words, too bad, so sad.

5. Be advised that slugs may not be delivered with excessive force. “Excessive force” is defined as a deliberate attempt to cause significant bodily discomfort. Excessive force will likely result in being barred from the game for an as-yet-undetermined amount of time. Your mother is the sole judge of what shall qualify as excessive force, and be assured that she knows it when she sees it. Her ruling on this (and all other things too, while we’re at it) is entirely, irrevocably, utterly final.

6. Slugs may be delivered only to the upper arm, period. See rule #5.

7. In the event that a Slug Bug is called on the interstate, but then your family stops at a rest stop, and then passes the same Slug Bug again 30 minutes later, the Slug Bug may be called again. This is due to the fact that putting the car in park cancels out all previously called Slug Bugs. If, however, your family goes to the drive-through window and does not put the car in park, all previously-called Slug Bugs shall stand, so pay attention.

8. Be advised that considering your preoccupation with this game, your mother makes every attempt to avoid driving past Volkswagen dealerships. But as it is sometimes unavoidable, be advised that a Volkswagen dealership counts as only one Slug Bug and is, in no way, an excuse for a backseat bloodbath. It is duly acknowledged, with a note of affectionate exasperation, that your father views this rule quite differently and seems to seek out Volkswagen dealerships with adolescent glee, perhaps even slowing down in front of them. If he conducts the Dealership Clause of this game with different rules, at a time when your mother is not in the car, then so be it.

9. It should be noted that your four-year-old little sister is not yet of legal age to fully understand the rules of the game of Slug Bug. It is further noted that she will sometimes call out “SLUG BUG!” when she sees a Toyota, a cow, or a fire hydrant. As allowances were once made for you when you were four, you must likewise make allowances for your sister (who is, in fact, merely attempting to imitate her big brothers). If you insist on playing the game in front of her, you must not excessively complain when she innocently and mistakenly slugs you.

10. Mom is exempt from being slugged, at all times, period. All guests riding in our backseat are similarly exempt, unless they have previously acknowledged their own family’s participation in the game of Slug Bug, with a full understanding of the rules.

11. Don’t make me pull this mini-van over. It just seemed like the right time to say that.

These rules are set forth with great affection by your mother, with the greatest of concern for your own physical well-being, and the greatest of consideration for her own mental health.

Signed, June 8, 2009,
Mom

We called it punch buggy, and you also had to call out the color. Also a car with one headlight was a pididdle. That got you the same punching rights.

Punch Buggy

My siblings love to play punch buggy (we're all adults now except the youngest btw) but I adopted rules that must be followed when I'm driving when my father started including crazy rules that just ended up in unnecessary violence. My father's new rules started including all VWs, PT Crusiers, Minis and similar cars in Punch Buggy which started getting ridiculous. He also allowed the calling of Punch Buggies for out of state plates (only if the state did NOT border the one in which we were driving). THe cars had to be driving (ruling out dealerships). My rules are simple, only bugs may be called and the color mentioned. No slugging allowed, and no bonus cars as outlined in Dad's rules above. Parked bugs count.

Punch Buggy!

Oh yes! We play this. And we've added Ups Trucks, too (UPS trucks). Although, we don't punch (we were getting a little too violent)...we're all about the verbal.

LOL! I cannot tell you how timely this post is. I have four children and this game is played EVERY time we get in the car, so I spend A LOT of time officiating! I now try to avoid streets where I (and the kids!) know beetles are parked! :)

Blast from the past
6/8/2009 at 3:28 pm
I taught daycare and on our trips to and from school the kids would play this game, only they had to say, "Punchbuggy _____ (insert color). Don't punch back!" only no actual punches were thrown. Anywho, I still love this game and occasionaly subject my husband to a round when he isn't prepared!

Hilarious!
6/8/2009 at 3:57 pm
Oh my, that does take me back. We used to have to say (and somehow, we could only yell) Slug bug, green! No slug backs!! Meaning you can't get me for the same car. This oh so official set of rules would have been very helpful...

We play this game all the time-we call it punch buggy. Our rules are similar-VW buses count too mailnly cause you don't see them much. The ultimate slug bug is the Herby bug that drives around town once in awhile. If you are the one to get it the game is over for the day.

My boys are fond of excessive force in the slug buggy game so we changed it to Nickle bug in which you owe the other person a nickle for every buggy you see. My son upped it the other day by reinventing it as lick bug which Mom had to veto as that is DISGUSTING AS HECK!

Old Bug, Double Slug
6/11/2009 at 3:51 pm
We do a double-slug for old Bugs (i.e. not the New Beetle model ca. 2000+) and call out, "Old bug, double slug." Also, we actually drive a bug (New Beetle) so of course had to make an exemption that you can't slug for a bug you're riding in! Great post.

Us, too
6/8/2009 at 5:04 pm
As kids we played slug-bug, too. We also called out pididdle for one headlighted cars. Too funny. I don't think I'll teach my two kids. They hit each other enough the way it is.

Punch Buggy/Slug Bug idea for Dad
6/8/2009 at 5:49 pm
I wonder has Dad, who appears to take sadistic pleasure in driving by Volkswagen dealerships, considered piling the kids into the car, and going to visit a Volkswagen Beetle Convention? I would suggest steak for dinner that night, which can be tenderized on the multiple upper-arm bruises that would certainly be available! After all, since it isn't a "Dealership," it doesn't fall under the Dealership Clause! (Yes, I'm a Dad, but it was their mother that taught them Punch Buggy!)

Jeep
6/8/2009 at 6:50 pm
My boys and I always play a similar game we call "Jeep!" It is similar to punch buggy, but we call Jeeps instead and use points. This is not just any Jeep, but the traditional, take the top off, Jeep. Every Jeep in worth 1 point except red Jeeps are worth 2 points. If you call something else a Jeep by accident, you loose 2 points. If you have to get out of the car for any reason, you loose all your points and have to start over. Jeep dealers don't count. I'm hoping my husband finally gets the hint and buys me a red Jeep.

Oh, my goodness, this made me really laugh. My hubby has 2 brothers, no sisters, and yeah, I can totally see their family needing these rules at some point during their childhood. :) :) :)

WOOT!
6/8/2009 at 8:59 pm
I love it, I am totally stealing these rules!!!! My kids insist on playing this too because their mother insists on punching their father ;) hehehe, only because she has better eyesight!

6/9/2009 at 12:13 am
Oh my, what awesome memories this brought back. We (mainly my brothers and I, but occassionally there were also cousins involved) loved this game growing up. It's quite possible that if we were ever on another road trip together, we might reinstate this game! I remember my mom having a set of rules for the game, as well. Thank you for this trip down memory lane!

Punch Buggy, No Punch Backs
6/9/2009 at 12:45 am
We also called it Punch Buggy. My husband, my daughter (now 15) played it relentlessly when we were out in the car. It drove other family members crazy, but we had fun! I love the rules!

6/9/2009 at 9:12 am
Our family plays a different game. We play the Saab game. If you see a Saab, you call it (sans the violence). First to call it (and it has to be verified by another passenger) gets 5 points. First to 50 gets a silly song serenade and special ice cream. You call a Saab incorrectly, you lose 5 points. You have to be in a wheeled conveyance to be able to call a Saab.

Can I just say I love your posts. Honestly, I am still laughing (and empathizing) over your "camisole" post. I hope you are getting paid for what you write, and I hope you keep doing it for a long time. I always look forward to what you post. Great humor and insight. Keep it up. Oh, we too have similar slug bug rules to minimize the tears and maximize the fun. Do you do car songs too. If you do, I bet they are a hoot. I have boys, so our families songs are not the most polite, but are funny and keep everyone entertained.

We call it kiss bug. Only kisses can be given. Slugging became an issue. Daddy and Mommy love the game...

From the luggage compartment
6/9/2009 at 2:03 pm
Thanks for a blast from the past, Shannon! We played slug bug and often either my brother or I was crouched in the little luggage compartment of our VW beetle (we usually fought over who got to ride there). It blows my mind now when I think of how dangerous it was sitting in that cramped little space over the ENGINE!! But then no one was wearing seatbelts anyway. Oh my!

oh, the rule we make up for our own sanity!
6/9/2009 at 6:00 pm
My personal favorite was #8! This sounds just like a dad!! Sounds like a little too much testosterone to me, but then again I only have 2 boys and sometimes that is too much for me!!

Yeah...I made my boys start
6/9/2009 at 9:36 pm
Yeah...I made my boys start calling them "Hug Bugs" instead. They didn't think that was as cute as I did.

Adult participation

Is it sad that my husband and I (before we were married) and our mutual best friend, had virtually the same rules in effect and played the game often and with a vengeance IN OUR TWENTIES with no children present at any time to offer up as an excuse for being so into this game?? Oh well.

Old Bugs only
6/10/2009 at 11:51 am
We play slugbug as well, but only the OLD ones count. There are FAR too many new bugs out on the road, so if you happen to see an older version, you have to call it and point it out to everyone. Same rules as above apply though. Saves on getting "slugged" as often.

It may be too late for you,
6/10/2009 at 3:22 pm
It may be too late for you, but in anticipation of the backseat bloodbath we taught "punch buggy" as the "love bug" game. Instead of beating each other, the person getting the tally calls out "LOVE YOU (insert color of VW bug)!" The tally runs for an entire day (sunrise to sunrise), person with the most love / tallies wins. If someone mistakenly calls out a love bug (wrong make or color), they lose all of their points and have to start over. The 6-year-old has come back from just such a situation to win (beating out both of his parents). It gets quite competitive, passing dealerships isn't a problem - it's a point generator, thus far no friends have complained about not getting to punch / getting punched...and our minivan is completely full of boys.

Rule 7
6/10/2009 at 4:36 pm
The legalese of your document is pretty comprehensive. The one problem we have in our family is encountering parked VWs. There are a few around our town that are permanently parked in yards and driveways, and one in a grocery store parking lot. We have a rule against calling out a slug bug preemptively: i.e. the bug must be actually seen, not anticipated. And if we go to the store, pass a permanently parked bug (PPB), and drive home again, even though the car was in park and turned off as in rule #7, said PPB does not count. Sometimes the arguing over points gets so vicious, that I do wish we had a write up such as this!

What about....
6/10/2009 at 7:07 pm
the Cadillac Whack? Do the same rules apply?

Sissy Momma?
6/10/2009 at 11:59 pm
My mom never allowed us to call it "slug bug". I think it was her way of eliminating all possibilities of any of this slugging to go on. We had to call them "lady bugs"...

Cruiser Bruiser
6/11/2009 at 9:32 am
We play slug bug, but only for points, as for many years it was just my husband and me and one of us would be driving. We've gotten so that we just call out the color on it's own and keep score over the whole trip. We do keep the score going over the whole trip, whether or not the car goes into park. Usually I win. Another variation is the Cruiser Bruiser for PT Cruisers. Heather BT

Excellent Rules
6/29/2009 at 11:57 pm
We taught our son to punch the ceiling of the car while calling out "Slug Bug" and the color. He gets all the fun of slugging and nobody gets bruised. Hopefully he'll never punch through the fabric up there!

9/23/2009 at 4:25 pm
I recall a much more painful version of this game when I was a kid. Luckily the boys didn't play "_itty Twister" with the girls. Thankfully I never had to "Whistle Dixie" to get them to "let go". This must be a little boy thing or what you so correctly deemed a "lot of testosterone in the backseat".

10/1/2009 at 1:03 pm
We play slugbug, and have a few others as well. Slugbug is the only one with contact involved, and that is more of a tap on the shoulder. We also call out school buses (though you have to SING "Schoooooool Bus"), yellow trucks (yep, any kind of truck that is also more than half yellow), and PT Cruisers (PT Blue!). We don't keep scores, probably because I would cheat knowing where all the school bus parks are. Keeps the kids from killing each other when we are out. Sadly, my wife is a bigger cheat than I am. She'll randomly invent new things if I get too many VW's in a run. Her favorite is "Cedar Beater". Yeah, cedar trees. Which are as common as nickles around here. *sigh*

we are selling the game 123 Punch Buggie

I love this game and I am addicted. so much that i have created a package added a hand held tally counter to keep track of the punch buggies seen.
