The Scent of a Small Man

By Daring Young Mom on Wednesday, June 3, 10:09 am EDT

Growing up, I remember going into my brother’s room and thinking, “Boys kind of smell funny.” It always smelled funky in there though I could never quite pinpoint the reason why. I concluded that it was simply his maleness making his room smell as it did and I didn’t give much more thought to it.

In high school, boy smell took on a new meaning as the boys I knew started slathering on cologne and many of them even developed certain habits of good personal hygiene. By the time I met Dan, my perception had changed greatly and the idea of a stinky boy smell was a distant memory. Besides when I’m pregnant, I generally love the way Dan smells and when I’m pregnant I hate the scent of perfume, flowers, and most of my favorite foods. It’s really not his fault.

Then along came little baby Magoo. He smelled pretty much the same as Laylee, clean, fresh and baby-like with those strangely sweet smelling diapers and skin slathered in lotions and shampoos. I could snuggle and sniff him all day long. I still can. Sometimes I actually want to nibble him, in sort of a friendly way, not as much like a cannibal.

However, as he’s aged, although he personally still smells like a peach, the spaces he occupies have come to smell… not quite so sweet. The two main bathrooms he uses have a faint but constant smell of urine about them. It doesn’t matter how hard I scrub, what chemicals I use or which surfaces I hose down, the smell always lingers. When you walk into one of those bathrooms, you think, “Someone has urinated here.”

Now any civilized person who knows what a bathroom is for KNOWS what people do in there, but the hope of every good housekeeper is that her bathrooms will not constantly bear sensory reminders of those actions. My bathrooms do. If you ever forget what a bathroom is used for, just come into one of mine, take a whiff and you’ll remember straight away.

The reasons I blame this new sensory experience on Magoo are that the scent did not exist before he was potty trained and it still does not exist in the master bathroom which he rarely uses. I comfort myself that his personal person does not smell like pee and that when I married a man, my home did not begin to smell that way. It gives me hope that as he grows, the smell will shrink. Hope is good. Hope and air freshener.

I use a black light to see what I have missed from the "monkey " smells that is what I occasionally call my 9 yr old son, and he uses the bathroom as a place where he thinks he is putting out a fire.. I clean the toilets the floor , with vinegar and lemon juice then turn off the lights to see what I have missed, then wipe clean but this is a temporary solution because once he uses the bathroom again the boy smell returns just not as bad

vinigar really does work. we are sharing a bathroom (hopefully not much longer) with the 4, soon to be 5 of us.. I have two sons, ages 11 and 7, imagine where they miss!! and a husband of course (lets hope he doesnt miss!) anyway, it gets on the outside of the bowl, around the base of the toilet, the floor..yeah, so I scrub it all, and the inside I pour with bleach. I have never had the urine smell linger thank goodness!! but the boy smell!! yeah..boys to me smell like wet dog..especially when they sweat..and their rooms smell like feet, wet dog and well..occasionally, poot..its really gross, and I often wonder "why me" although I wouldnt trade my boys for the world LOL

Glad I am not alone!

My 3 year old son's bathroom always smells faintly of urine no matter what I do. I have used vinegar, toilet bowl cleaner and even tea tree oil! Plus I have followed his every bathroom visit with a cleaning towel and still it persists! It makes me feel less like failure that others deal with this as well =)

Just wait until puberty!!

That's a whole other experience. When our boys were young we actually pulled the toilet up a few times to clean under it. The first toilet we broke and had to install a new one. After about 3 sucessful under-the-toilet cleanings we decided to caulk around the base of the toilet. I don't think you are supposed to do that, but at least the urine wasn't getting trapped under the toilet. We also wrapped a large towel around the base of the toilet and washed it regularly. It seemed to work catching rogue streams of pee and stopping puddles around the base.

"Rogue streams of pee." There's a phrase I bet no one ever thought they'd be saying.

That caulking around the bottom sounds like a great idea to me. :) My little man isn't potty trained yet (he's only 18 mos), so he still smells like baby...and occasionally like stinky diapers. :)

Very timely topic

I was just sniffing out possible sourced of the urine smell that has come to inhabit my boy's bathroom so this is a very timely topic for me. It is rather embarrassing to have that smell lingering in my bathroom but I am hopeful that anyone that comes to visit will realize that I have two young boys.

Too true

I have two boys, 9 and 7 years old. I know it's not my boys fault, but their bathroom really stinks! My kids are probably tired of me nagging to keep their bathroom clean. We always run out of stock of bathroom fresheners due to the odor from my children's bathroom.

Check your ceilings. No

Check your ceilings. No kidding. You'd think a shorty like Magoo wouldn't be able to hit something that far away, but many, many moms of boys tell tales of pee on the ceiling. That may be where the smell is coming from. Tom still sits to pee, at my husband's insistence. Makes it difficult to go "on the go" but it's great at home.

I have yet to be blessed w/ little boys (or firemen) but when I do give birth to anyone of the male gender! They are sitting when they pee till they are at least 56.

This is not the solution, trust me, you'll just end up needing to clean the wall in front of the toilet as soon as there's an "emergency." It sucks.

Smell, what smell?

Not sure what you are talking about? I haven't noticed a different smell in our house and my son is now almost 5yo. Maybe because he has great aim or...maybe he has the same aim as me!?!?! :-) I'll have to ask my wife. :)

Six Little Boys

We have six little boys, all but the youngest (who is not yet potty trained) miss regularly when they go. They clean the bathroom daily, and I clean it really well weekly. I NEVER use their bathroom, ugghh.

Clean under the toilet!
6/11/2009 at 12:20 pm
When my husband and I moved into our house, there was always the faint smell of urine in the downstairs bathroom, which I couldn't explain. We have no children of our own at this point, but the previous owners had three little boys. Sure enough, my husband pulled up the toilet to look underneath. It was NOT pretty. There was TONS of old urine underneath... I won't go into detail. Once cleaned, the bathroom did not smell of urine anymore and hasn't since. We haven't used any caulking, since we don't have kids and have heard you shouldn't do that. But if I have a little boy, you had better bet that I will be getting that caulking gun out!
