Ribbons and bows

By Mighty Maggie on Thursday, April 24, 5:30 am EDT

Yesterday I found out I am having a girl. GIIIIIRL. We are so excited. We already have one of the boy variety and we had our hopes we'd have a girl this time around (while swearing up and down that of COURSE we would be THRILLED with a second boy, and really, I think we would). Last night we cuddled up with a 30,000+ name book and I tried not to have nightmares about my husband's preference for names from our 70's and 80's generation. (WHAT IS WRONG WITH HIM?)

We told our parents, we told my sisters, we told some friends and the internet and it seems that the standard form of congratulations for seeing Girl on the ultrasound is not, "Oh, how wonderful, a daughter!", it's "YAY! Let's go shop for PINK!"

Fine with me! I love pink. I am the kind of person who walks into Pottery Barn Kids and wonders how to convince her husband to let her decorate THEIR bedroom with the PBK little girls' collection. Pastel pink polka dot curtains just make me happy! And I can't say I haven't wistfully strolled through the baby girl clothes or hoped to have a reason to buy those little felt hair clips you can find all over Etsy. So yay! Shopping!

Except! I have learned, in my nearly one year as a mom, that I do not shop correctly. Here are the proper ways to outfit your child, as demonstrated by my circle of Way Hipper Than Me Urban Moms:

  • Share clothes. I had a boy and you had a girl? And now you're having the boy and I'm having the girl? We'll just trade plastic storage tubs of clothes!
  • Shop consignment stores. This is different from thrift store shopping. These are consignment stores. Barely worn designer labels for cheap! Score!
  • Shop the giant mom-organized sales. You know, the sales you hear about because someone in your moms group is on top of the Local Mom Pulse and shoots everyone an email about the big Moms of Multiples sale going down next weekend. This is where you stock up till size Kindergarten. Don't you have a closet big enough to store five years' worth of shoes?

And this is how I outfit my child:

  • "Mom? Jack is totally growing out of his 12 month pants! They're like shorts! Nothing fits him anymore!"

As much as I'd like to be a trendy yet thrifty and savvy shopper, I'm the idiot standing in the middle of the Target baby clothes section wondering why no one sells footie pajamas past size 12 months, gets completely frustrated and goes home with nothing.

I didn't buy Jack clothes for a long time, seeing as how baby clothes are the favorite gift to give and we were up to our ears in cute stuff for at least six months. (Believe it or not, there are cute baby boy clothes too!) Then the grandmothers sort of took over the outfitting and I only have to go hunt for a particular holiday outfit or certain kind of pajamas (WHY NO FOOTIE PAJAMAS?) every once in a while. I had lots of friends offer to give me clothes, but most of them wanted the clothes back once Jack grew out of them and that was too much for me to handle. Keep track of borrowed clothes? When I could barely keep track of when he last ate? I don't see how people do it.

And now I listen to friends talking about the latest steal they found at a consignment store, or what treasures they discovered at the big sales and the mere idea makes me cower in a corner. Talk about overwhelming! It probably comes from the way I like to shop for myself: enter store, find exactly what I want, leave store. I'm not big on browsing and hunting and combing through endless piles to find the one item I know I can't do without. That's just a lot of work.

So! Now that I've confessed my shameful secret do you have any advice for the easily overwhelmed who really would like to figure out this bargain shopping thing? Because I'm having a GIRL and apparently shopping is REQUIRED.

Carter's has footie pajamas all the way up to size 5!!! If you find an outlet near you, you can even get them on sale at the end of the season - I just bought some for $5.99!!!

We bought some for my daughter a few months ago, so maybe they still have some in stock. They had plain and patterned styles for boys and girls. Good luck!

I hardly ever go to TCP so now I have a reason. And those other stores aren't near me, but you know who lives frightening close to a Wal Mart? MY MOM. SUPER!

Keep looking...

Hey, my twins are 5 years old and are still wearing footie pajamas! They're out there - you just have to look for them! Congrats on your GIRL! YAY! :D I have three girls myself... they are fun, and dressing them is indeed a little mroe work. But I am a HUGE fan of those parent sales/MOMs group sales. They have saved my wallet and my life over the last 5 years... to me, it's worth a morning of misery searching through endless racks of clothes to be able to afford to feed my children AS WELL AS dress them! ;)

For some reason Target has this weird black hole of baby clothes between around nine months and two years. I get footie pajamas at the Carter's outlet or Old Navy or Children's Place. The ones from Old Navy are really nice, actually. Target does have really cute girls clothes though. Not that I would know. I think you're either an obsessive clothes shopper or you're not. I buy baby clothes at outlet stores, Target, Ebay, church sales, thrift stores, Old Navy, JC Penney, Walmart, Etsy, Gap Baby, and Old Navy. i.e. every single place I can. But I love to buy baby clothes so it's fun to dig through racks, for me. And I might want to note that we can't get Eli's dresser drawers closed, he has so many clothes. But if that's not your style, embrace it, and go check out the Target little girls section. I guarantee you won't be disappointed. After that, go to Gap Baby. That's where I usually really have the "these girls clothes are so cute" meltdown. And I haven't loaned out any baby clothes, for the same reason you mentioned. I feel like a meanie, but finding all that stuff took work, and I feel like I'd never get it back.

I just read your message and laughed at the first part--I always thought the same thing about Target!

Borrow clothes?
4/24/2008 at 4:00 pm
My sister-in-law has a daughter just a year older than mine. When we found out we were having a girl, she offered to let us "borrow" the clothes. Uh... no. I mean, what the heck? I was hoping she'd just give them to me because she had some super cute clothes. Instead, I got a TON of girl clothes from a friend who is done having kids. Although, I am going to be just as stingy when it comes to giving away my baby girl clothes. Go through and pick out the ones I like that will fit in the plastic bin. Someone can have the rest though. I'll share the ugly/stained ones. :-)

Move those clothes around!
4/24/2008 at 6:41 pm
I got rid of all my daughter's baby clothes after she grew out of them! I did keep some special dresses, Christmas etc, but the rest worked through a network of friends, cousins and nieces. We all shared and passed along and it was great. If there were some that somebody wanted back, we put initials in the tags to remember. Most of us though kept them moving around. I still get clothes from my sister and pass our stuff down and my daughter is 7. I figure save as much money as possible early, because when our daughters get to the age when they won't wear hand-me-downs or Target clothes, it is going to be expensive! And I think that time is coming soon.

Just zipped up the footies...

My son (also a Jack) is 14 months and still rocking some footie jammies. I stocked up at Old Navy, though we also got lots of hand-me-downs from Carters and A Children's Place. I'm like you with shopping. I HATE doing it for myself, and enjoy it only a bit more when it's for my son. I tend to stare at things, not see what I want immediately, and get frustrated and leave. My secret has been my mother-in-law. Every time Jack outgrows his clothes, my husband places a call and casually mentions that we have no clothes that fit (Oh, he's getting so big! He's grown out of all his 18 month clothes already!) Before you know it, she visits with a huge bag of new stuff. It's fantastic. It also helps that we are friends with two couples who have had boys and are now done with child rearing and happy to pawn off all their old stuff on us.

Footies and beyond
4/25/2008 at 1:34 pm
TCP has great footies that don't pill... we love 'em. I just bought a few in the 3T size for next winter. They also have INCREDIBLE sales about halfway through each season where they start offering clothes at insane prices like .99 or 1.99. I go a little nuts... why not? Other than that, buying a lot or a set of clothes on ebay is economical and relatively easy too. Side note to Erin Marie: why is it a problem to just borrow the cloths? Curious, more than anything. We pass clothes back and forth between friends, but the understanding is that most stuff comes back to the original owner. Nothing wrong with that...

Congrats and me, too.

I'm new to the whole parent blogging circuit and new to commenting on blogs, but this one looked like a good place to start. I'm a new blogger and new father-to-be... to, of course, a girl :-) First kid, so no clothes to be passed down yet. Good luck with the name, I feel like my wife and I have revived Cold War brinksmanship and stalemates. In other words, it could get messy... PS: I'm not a girl, why is my icon girly?

I know for a fact that the South Jersey Target carries footie pajamas all the way up to _adult_ - as in too big to fit me, were I so inclined. Maybe it's just a gap in the sizes, or the time of year?

We're all about PINK!
5/8/2008 at 12:44 pm
I just found this wonderful blog and am so excited to be a part! Wonderful information. In regards, to "pink", I myself have a daughter (8) who is definetly a tomboy. However, that doesn't discourage her from liking pink. Matter of fact, she's happy in pink. Pink goes well with dirt! Aren't brown and pink hot colors right now?? This leads me to sharing my website... www.sillyjillybean.com. My mom and I hand craft and personalize most things we sell from baby bibs and burp cloths, diaper bags, room decor and art, and so on. Here's the thing... It's SOOO hard for us to come up with ideas for little boy and little boy babies. It's just something about those girly colors and all the fun to create and come up with great designs. So if you have ideas for little boys that we haven't covered, please share that with me. We're always looking for new things to make!
