Pink vs. Blue

By Mighty Maggie on Thursday, March 13, 8:36 am EDT

I am throwing a baby shower this weekend for a friend who is having a girl. What this means is that I have an excuse to buy everything in pink. Pink invitations, pink frosting, pink decorations, pink flowers, pink favors and pink napkins. I am even planning to dye some pink Easter eggs. (For the record: I highly recommend throwing baby showers near Easter time when everything in the stores is the perfect shade of Baby Shower.) I am really enjoying this opportunity to indulge my inner 6 year-old girl.

Now, I realize that Baby Girl does not automatically equal Pink. I just happen to like pink. And since I have a boy, I don't get to have pink terribly often. I'm not necessarily against pink for little boys -- he does have a very pink squishy baby doll -- but it's not like I have any reason to peruse the frilly dress rack.

SOMETIMES, however, it'd be fun to look through those frilly dresses. And while we're on the subject, any mom of a little boy will tell you how skimpy the boys' clothes section is compared to the little girls' section. There are heaps of dresses and bonnets and sweaters and pink bunny ears in the girls' section right now, but the boys have one rack of khaki pants. Ho hum. Jack is growing out of all the cute stuff his grandparents and aunts bought him for Christmas, so I've been looking at 12-18 month clothes, all of which are covered in dinosaurs and trucks and monkeys and airplanes and shovels. I usually end up putting them back on the shelf. I'm just not quite ready for t-shirts splattered with cartoon bugs.

People assume I must be hoping this new baby is a girl. I've already got the boy, right? And it's true, we'd love to have a girl. Think of all the frilly dresses I could buy! Hair bows! Pink pajamas! Those tights with the little mary jane feet! But actually, I'm pretty ambivalent. Sure, I'd be all over the ruffles, but another boy sounds just as fun. As excited as I get about those little felt hair clip thingies all over Etsy, I get pretty misty-eyed over the thought of my two boys racing their bikes and competing for the farthest jump off the swing set.

I have a handful of nephews and I think I know what to expect with a boy. Pretty soon we'll be buying plastic dump trucks and toy boats for the bathtub. We'll pause at construction sites on our walks to the lake to admire the bulldozers and the cement trucks. He'll be excited to watch for the commuter train his dad takes once a week. A fire truck blazing down the street will be cause for extreme excitement. Our living room will soon be a disaster zone, sprinkled with a fine layer of Lego blocks. Sounds good to me. My mom never tires of complaining that I never played with dolls when I was little anyway. I can totally see myself baking cookies for the football team and going to battle against grass stains.

So I don't know if I'd rather have a boy or a girl. What a pointless "decision" anyway! You get what you get.  But I'm totally ignoring all those people who think you should wait and be surprised -- WE ARE FINDING OUT. If it turns out I have a reason to buy teeny tiny outfits smothered in ribbons and lace, you can bet I'll want to get a head start!

I never felt bad about the clothing selection for my son, until I had my daughters. But the cutest outfit they wore they wore this winter was two hand-me-down little boy hockey jerseys. Never would have bought my girlie girls those...but they rocked them! Shame it doesn't work the other way around. My son in princess garb (being dressed by his sisters) will never be seen in public...it's cute at home though! I think you'll have fun either way.

You are right about there being more selection for girl clothes. We live up North and it is pretty cold come March 23rd! Those teeny little dresses with spaghetti straps. I am a bit old fashioned, but would rather not dress my girls in "skimpy" dresses, let alone chilly dresses. Maybe I should wander over to the rack of khakis. Good for you for finding out what you are having, it is fun to get ready for the coming baby.

I totally agree with everything you said. My two boys just turned 4 and 2 and I trip through Legos getting through my living room and know every possible type of truck these days. I wasn't much for playing house and dolls as a little girl, but I do drool over the girls' section at stores and wish I had an excuse to sew some. But seeing the two boys finally playing together is awfully fun.

I have two boys 4 and the other one turning 8 in august. The 8 year ols one's name is Arman from Ga, and the other one's name is Arian. Arian's nickname is Haji Baba. This last week all of a sudden I am noticing my 8 year old is turning very handsome, I was wondering if I could put his picture in this magazine, so far I couldn't find any links.

Pink for all!

"get pretty misty-eyed over the thought of my two boys racing their bikes and competing for the farthest jump off the swing set." Girls do that to! At least I used to. My mother thoroughly dislike my tom-boy manners. But that was in the sixties. I hope in 2008 things can be different. Or will racing and jumping be boy things for ever? I have boys only. When they were young (kindergarten) they loved pink. And purple, lilac, red, orange etc etc. And I made and bought them pink an purple sweaters sometimes with flower prints. They loved it and wore it. I also refused to cut their hair. Boys can love and wear pink. Girls can love blue and climb trees. So do give in to your love of pink, but do not exclude your son in this.

Tomboys and girlboys!
3/16/2008 at 12:36 pm
Yes, it´s lovely with pink for all! I have a boy and a girl and they really are their opposite! My girl (12) is a tomboy! Nothing frilly or girlie on her but of course, someimes she must, e.g. school parties! But, otherwise, she love boys´ buggy jeans and shirts. Her hair is straight and short. I´ve tried to have her more feminine but she refuses. With my boy (14), it´s so, so different! He always loved long hair and I can assure you - it is really, really long! But, if it was enough with that. I see that quite often boys have long hair but then it´s straight or frizzy. My son has the most beautiful, blonde and girlie hair you could ask for - any girl´s dream!!! A cascade of a princess´ locks and of fantastic length and curliness. Down passing his bum! Actually, you may think that he shouldn´t be allowed to have it like that. But, if nature gave him this opportunity, why not? I think every boy should have the poosibility to wear long hair like the girls! When he grows up, he will have to wear short hair anyway. Since, he was little, he also loved pink and everything about girls´ clothes, especially pleated skirts and he loves that! Now, you think he is bullied at school? No, he isn´t but to be honnest he was in the beginning but it had little effect on him! He just replied to the other boys: "You´re jealous - grow your hair out and you can enjoy it as much as I do and you can be wearing skirts and girlls´coats; "It´s great and very nice especially during hot summers! So, when people see my kids, they automatically assume they are the opposite sex! And of course with all prejudice still, they think it´s okay with my daughter being boyish but with my son being a girl - no way! All this looking down at this feminine on boys - are we in 2008!? Raising a tomboy
3/27/2008 at 9:12 pm
I was wondering how you handle raising your tomboy. My 6 year old is a tomboy, (most likely due to having an older brother), and I've had a hard time with it. It is SO hard to find her clothes! She won't wear anything girlie and its hard to find plain girl's clothes; everything is embelished with a butterfly, a flower or something and I just can't bring myself to buy her boys clothes. Maybe I should. Maybe I should just let her be herself, but I wonder about her being teased at school.

raising a tomboy as well!!

My step-daughter is 8, almost 9, and she refuses to wear any girl clothing, even if there are no butterflies, ribbons, pink, etc. She can tell by the cut of the clothing that its for girls. It is distressing! Do we let her continue? Will she grow out of it in puberty? She did have some difficulty in public school, but she has since moved to a private school with uniforms. This has eliminated problems at school. Its tough. She seems to do well socially, but still prefers to hang out with the boys. I hope it does not affect her when she's older.

Boys´ hair!

Yes, it seems to spread this thing with really long hair on boys! I think it is great! My son is still having his hair really long and his best friend also seem to enjoy long, beautiful hair! They actually comb and brush eachother´s hair now and then - that look kinda sweet! good that boys are tending to their more feminine sides! Maria!
