Parenting and exercise

By Daddy Daze on Monday, April 21, 10:52 am EDT

So I’m trying to get in shape and improve my overall health. Hey, I’ve dropped 7 pounds! It hasn’t been easy, as I don’t really like exercising and eating moistened cardboard for breakfast every morning. Still, I don’t want to be the "fat dad." I also don’t want to be diabetic. So off I go.

What bugs me is those fitness jerks who say things like, "There are no excuses for not exercising," and "make the time!" Ok, Cpt. Fitness. I bet you don’t have kids. Or a job. Or a spouse. Let’s look at how I can "make the time."

On Mondays I go to work at 7 A.M. and get back home at 7:15 P.M. Yeah, after a sixteen hour day I really want to run two-and-a-half miles. I know what you’re going to say: Get up early and do it. Alright, I will. Now I have to get up at 5:00 in the freaking morning. If that isn’t punishment for getting fat, I don’t know what is.

Tuesdays: I work from 7:00 A.M. to about 5:30-6:00 P.M. I usually go for a run at 5:30. Not too bad.

Here’s where it gets really fun.

On Wednesdays, the schedule is:

  • Up at 7:00 with the kids
  • Fed, dressed and out of the house by 8:40 so Grace can go to school.
  • Back home by 9:20 with William. If the weather is nice, I’ll put him in the jogger stroller and run him around the neighborhood. I also do my resistance workout in the house on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Have you tried doing push ups or crunches with a 3-year-old in the area? He thinks I want him to climb all over me. Yes, William, that’s exactly what I want. An additional 25 pounds to try and lift off of the ground. Thanks for that.
  • 11:40: Back in the car to get Grace from school
  • 12:05: The playground for an hour.
  • At 1:00 or so we return home and I make lunch for the three of us. The kids get something yummy like mac and cheese with carrot sticks or whatever, and I have my bone dry turkey on whole wheat with lettuce and tomato plus a water. Yum.
  • At 1:30 William takes a nap and Grace and I do Play-Doh or whatever until…
  • 3:30 when my wife comes home from her gym. Then I go to work until 11 P.M.

Friday is the same as Wednesday, except that William and I go to the library for story hour at 10:00 and then the general store for a snack at 11:00. We sit in front of the wood burner and eat, then hop in the car at 11:30 to get Grace from school. Go back to "12:05" as described above for the rest of the day. So, on Fridays I have to get up at the crack of dawn again to fit in my workout.

Thursdays is a bit different. There’s no school, but there is ballet at 10:15. After that it’s off to yet another playground or whatever activity I can think of if I’m sick of the playground. Pick up at 12:05 above. Again, Thursday features the 5:00 A.M. workout.

So yes, technically I CAN do it. But man, I’m tired. All because I don’t want to be too exhausted to play in the yard anymore. These darn kids better appreciate this.

So, readers, I ask: How do you do it? I see fit and tidy parents at the playground all the time. Something is going on that I'm unaware of. Perhaps I need to read "The Secret."

It's never easy to get in

It's never easy to get in shape with kids and a job. You really have to want to be fit and healthy. Now that all the snow is melted I'm getting up at 6 or 7 am to go for a run, earlier on days that I work at 9. Then I have to either work or take care of my 7 month baby all day. I'm lucky he's a good baby that takes lots of naps. I spend most of his naptime cooking healthy meals for the whole family. Despite what a lot of people might think healthy food doesn't have to taste bad. Seriously. If it did I wouldn't be able to eat it. I love food. I'm vegan so I eat a lot of stir fry vegetables and tofu, with tons of spices and flavoring. There are good easy healthy foods available you just have to do a little research. I'm tired too. I work hard to stay in shape. But to me its worth it. Eating better and exercising makes me feel a lot better mentally than I would otherwise.

I'm waiting until the experts all agree

After all, some also say not to exercise less than two hours before bedtime, and of course we're all getting the recommended 8-9 hours of sleep, har de har har har. And I already get up between 4 and 5 am, I'm not getting up any earlier, thank you. Maybe if they come up with "Dance dance revolution" variations with decent soundtracks?

Being a mother is a workout!

Being a mother is a workout! Cleaning the house, kids,shopping,etc.. that is a workout in itself, just takes a little longer to loose the weight ha ha. I wrote about that stuff on my little blog on my site, the title is 'did you just call me fat'.

Motivation...
4/22/2008 at 7:16 pm
I think it's probably easier for Moms to motivate than it is for Dads. After all, we have baby weight to lose! I already get up before six everyday with my 14 month old (I am in charge of mornings-every morning), so early workouts are not an option. My hubby works second shift and I stay home, so I have plenty of time to fit in a workout before he leaves in the afternoons. I alternate cardio-running or biking-and weight days (though on weight days I still take a brisk walk), taking one day off every week, usually Saturdays, when I clean all day. My biggest savior-a full weight set/Smith machine in the garage. I can do my cardio while my hubby babysits, but for weight days, I can do abs and weights after my son goes to sleep. That way, I don't have to feel guilty about leaving my son or missing my workout. It's great! Also, having a dog that needs exercise helps get me out the door when I might not otherwise. I'm in better shape now than I was prior to having my son (won first overall for women in a 5K this weekend in 20:53) and I think it's because I would go freaking crazy if I didn't have something to do just for myself. It's awesome that you want to get in shape for your kids-my husband keeps saying the same thing but not really getting into it. Just make sure it's for you, too, or you won't stick with it. Good luck, and keep us updated!

Yes, my kids think I'm a jungle gym. As soon as I lay on the floor, they are all over me, which is why I've stopped doing pilates. Now I just complain about my belly roll all day. Sure I can probably do it while they are sleeping, but these kids can go to bed at 11 pm and be up at 7am. Apparently, I need more sleep than they. I've tried getting them to bed at 9pm, but they just end up goofing off for two hours.

Parenting and exercising

I hear you!! My son wakes up 2-3 times a night due to his allergies. So, I only get anywhere from 4-5 hours of sleep a night (not in a row). I wake up like a zombie sometimes. I'm listening to some audio cd's about how to improve your overall health and life. One of the recommendations is that you're supossed to jump to your feet as soon as you wake up and start "moving" ie: "exercising"... with what energy may I ask..I'm still trying to open my eyes!! Not to mention the fact that I now have to change him, feed him, bathe him..etc...your body becomes the least of your concerns some times.. The only thing I've come up with is to exercise with my son as he's doing his belly time on the blanket. I use him as my weight, or as my resistance as I try to do abdominals while I hold him with my legs and do leg lifts and abdominals..let me tell ya' .. he has a blast and I wake up extremely sore!! He is of course 8 mos and weighs about 17 1/2 Lbs. That's the only thing I can do..is multi-task while it seems to be entertaining for him.. and rewarding for me..Parenting is exercise!!!

Unfortunantly...

I don't do it. With two boys in school activities, both before and after school, working 55 hours a week, plus grad school classes at night, and my husband working over 70 hours a week at his own business, I feel lucky to have heathy meals on the table and clean undies. When I have free moments I choose to snuggle with boys instead of go out and run or go to the gym. I really miss it, because the pre-kid me was very active, but the current reality of my life means that it's not going to happen. I would like someone to come in and tell me where I could make time, however! Let's transport the pre-kid me to the future so she can tell me where to find the time!!!

Sorry that really gave me a good giggle for the day! My husband and I are roughly 20 years apart...we have a new baby 5 months old, and he has a 13 year old daughter... It is hard to get my husband up and moving sometimes, let alone up and working out. I know he really wants to, and he does, but work, family, and normal day life, doesn't always permit for a work out...Plus if you worked out an hour, takes 30-45 min. driving time back and forth, warm-up and cool down 30 min., shower after. 10-15 min. Ehhh...I rather him have a little extra for me to love and his time, than lean and fit with missing him for all that time he was gone. Take care...Enjoy some Ben and Jerrys!

Fit WITHOUT diet or exercise.
6/12/2008 at 5:21 am
Dear Daddy Daze! Maybe this won't work for you, but you may wanna try it. It works great for me! I am a woman, 5'6'', and have weighed 60-63 kgs for years. (a UK size 12, I think that's a US 8). Ok, I am not skinny, probably never will be, but I am not overweight either and probably never will be! I HATE EXERCISE (yes, I am sure I COULD make time for it if I really wanted, but I do not want to, thank you very much!). I HATE DIETS. I ADORE FOOD & RESTING. You think I'd probably be obese by now, but I am not. My secret is only common sense but the trick is that you have to practice it accurately and consistently: 1. I eat when I am hungry. Immediately. Do not wait until you starve. It doesn't matter if you ate 2 hours ago. If you are hungry, EAT. 2. I eat what I want and crave for. Forget all other people's advice. Forget fads and diet rules. Your body knows what it needs. If you want a salad, eat a salad. If you want crisps and a bacon sandwich, do NOT eat a salad, eat crisps and a bacon sandwich. I know you will think: "But this way I will only eat junk, cause that's all I crave for!". That may happen the first few days, until your body finds its own balance. After 1-2 weeks, you'll see that you will crave for a variety of foods, and not just the "bad" ones (but please, eat the "bad" ones as well when you crave for them!) 3. Chew your food properly and ENJOY it. Think of how yummy it is while you are chewing it! 4. Stop when you are full (not too full!) I find this the hardest part to practise, but it is easier if you do it in conjunction with rules 1 and 2. If you eat whenever you are hungry, even if that seems frequent, you will find that you have no desire to binge anymore. Also if you eat exactly what you want, you will feel satisfied sooner! Two additional things that may help: Sometimes you may think you are hungry, but you may just be dehydrated. Drink a glass of water. It is easier than you think to mistake thirst for hunger! (I am by no means suggesting here to do what a lot of silly fads suggest which is to "fill up" with water so you eat less. That is rubbish) Also: Walk. I may hate the gym, running and ALL sports, but I walk a lot. Not long 1-2 hour walks, but short ones that you do not need to make time for. Walk to the bus stop, or the grocery store. Do not take the lift, take the stairs. Walk with the kids, stroll in the park etc. I am sorry that this is so long, but it has been good for me so I thought I'd share it. It is common sense, it is easy, it is pleasant and it works with your body's natural inclinations and rhythm and not with fads.

Working From Home
7/22/2008 at 5:24 pm
I just recently found out I am pregnant and my huband and I are extremely excited!! We will need for me to continue making an income since we just recently bought our first house, but I would love to stay at home with the baby. Does anyone know of any legitimate jobs to do from home that you can actually make money from?? I have done lots of reseaching but you never quite know which sites are really legit. and which are just a scam. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Wow, you are a little on the busy side
7/30/2008 at 6:25 pm
Hi Daddy Daze, I would just like to say congrats, You are a very busy man by the sounds of things and work all those hours after lokking after the kiddies all day. You are one of the great fathers out there by the sounds of it. Full of dedication to the family, my hats off to you sir.
