An Open Letter to the Growling Lady in IKEA

By Daring Young Mom on Friday, January 11, 6:00 am EST

Dear Growling Lady in Ikea,

My son Magoo thinks he's a Dide-O-Swear, specifically a T-Rex. Since I don't allow him to eat people or tear goats to shreds, the only way he can express his Rex-ishness is to growl ferociously at unsuspecting strangers.

Magoo, the T-Rex
A fearsome T-Rex

He chooses his victims carefully and points to them saying, “I ken git em!" Then he either throws his body towards them from his seat in the cart or runs directly at them with his arms extended and his fingers spread like little claws.

My reactions to his behavior are not consistent. They vary with his loudness, my current mood and the way the strangers react. Every victim's reaction is different. Some people are genuinely startled, while others can tell he's up to something by the gleam in his eyes before he pounces. Post-shock, they usually range from mild amusement to judgmental annoyance. In my heart I wish everyone would just play along with him and feed off his utter glee.

Today as we walked into IKEA, he was at his prehistoric best. You watched as he growled at the man ahead of you. The victim let his face crack into half a smile and moved on.

Then he spotted you, an easy mark. There you were, a well-dressed middle-aged Asian woman walking with a purpose and a grimace on your face. He crouched down low and made his approach with talons out.

You did the best thing I could have imagined, short of body-slamming him to the ground. You suddenly bent down to meet his stance, rushed towards him with a huge grin on your face and let out an unbelievably loud growl for a grown woman to make in a public place. He crumpled into a giggling heap on the cement and you grinned and went on your way.

I want to let you know that I like you greatly and it is because of the great like I have for you that I refrained from embarrassing you by kissing you right on the nose. Thank you!

Love,

Mama Dide-O-Swear

I love it when people "get it". We encounter too many people on a day to day basis that just do not have the time for a little playfulness. It sure make up for it when we find one who wants to play too.

My 2 1/2 yr old son is also a ferocious 'dino-sour' and last night the young man working at GameStop growled back and chased him around the racks. Totally unexpected by the wee dino-sour, getting quite a funny reaction from him! It's great when people relax around kids.

As I was reading my first thought was, "I hope someone played dide-o-swear with Magoo! I totally would have run screaming from himin mock terror, or attacked back." Yeah for her!!

That's a person who knows how to live life. I've got two sons who would like her to come over and play.

Here's to all the obliging, indulging, kind strangers who cross the paths of harried mothers! God bless that dear woman!

It is simply wonderful when people can not only accept that children are a fact of life but enjoy and interact with them! Hurray for the Stranger-o-saur!

Depending on what MY purpose or mood would be at the time, I admit that my reaction might range from the polite half smile to some playful question about who he was attempting to be. I envy this woman's spontaneity. Your own appreciation of her response is commendable and may serve to encourage more interactive behavior on my part when I see Magoo at the grocery store. And, maybe some adults as well.

I love that lady, and I've never even met her! Maya's in a phase that's not quite as fun, the "if I see another kid, I yell at them, for fear they'll steal my (whatever)." Blech. But, I admit to being the growling lady myself on many occasions, when I don't have Maya with me -- it makes up for leaving my fun one at home!

That's such a great story! It's awesome that the woman in the IKEA played along. And that picture of Magoo is too cute.

My hubs is just like this, it's how I knew, long ago, that he would make a great dad, and soon he will :)

And it's great that YOU'RE a cool mom who loves it! I've come across a few who get weirded out by any stranger (even a lady-stranger) interacting in any way, howsoever brief, with their child. That said, I would have pretended terror as well - I made the last little boy who tried didoswear on me all shy, he was so shocked to have someone respond :-)

I have read that in many asian countries children are doted upon by everyone--you don't worry as much about stranger danger there. A friend adopted an older child from Vietnam, and had to teach him American adults (strangers) don't appeciate kids quite as much!

I was worried this would end as a story of how nasty and judgemental people can be. What a pleasant surprise. I hope she finds out she made your day!

that was a great story! i am, however, slightly taken aback by the comments about asians. there was no reference to the woman being born in this country or elsewhere. and the fact that she was asian, shouldn't have made a difference. you didn't reference the man's race, ethnicity, or age, even. as i understand the precedent you were setting, describing the woman in detail so that we could get a better picture.

however, its the stereotypes that come along with it that are upsetting and the comment by "Kat" which was even more so ignorant. Asia is a big continent. Several countries with myriad customs. One shouldn't generalize with so little information. The woman could have been 2nd generation from Montana for all she knows.

and as for 'stranger danger', there is much to be worried about, especially in those countries. and the danger is usually from american men.
