The Obligatory Trip to Disneyland

By Mighty Maggie on Thursday, June 18, 10:17 am EDT

I keep a list of Things I Knew About Parenting Before I Was A Parent. Things like nap schedules. Obviously the parents whose lives revolve around the nap schedule are letting their children run (and ruin!) their lives. But then I became a parent and understood that you don't have a nap schedule because your child runs your life, you have a nap schedule because if you don't, you will die. Or things like toys. How do parents stand all those awful noisy plastic toys? Why are there so many of them? Why can't they hide them in another room? And then I became a parent and found out how much fun it is to watch your child play with and learn from and discover toys, especially noisy plastic ones. And good luck finding places for them because everyone else loves to give your kid toys too.

My list keeps me humble and warns me not to spout off too much in front of other people who know everything about parenting but have yet to become parents. Besides, two years later I'm still crossing things off. I've recently decided that the Toy Principle also applies to vacations. I think I've mentioned here before that we were thinking of road tripping to Colorado, home of my nephews, a handful of old and beloved friends and one fabulous blogger I hoped to meet in person. We told ourselves we were very excited about this trip, except whenever one of us brought it up, the other was somewhat less than excited to talk about it. The drive felt long and difficult and unknown. And the days we'd actually spend with family and friends felt... long and difficult and unknown. I mean, the schedule is hard enough to keep at home, let alone planning around other families with small children. What if we drove all that way just to sit around in other people's living rooms?

And so we decided... to drive to DISNEYLAND. Because we are insane. Clearly. But the Toy Principle applies. We are not going to Disneyland because that's where I've always wanted to dump our life savings, or because we particularly enjoy grownups in cartoon character costumes . No, we're going to Disneyland because we think our kids will have FUN.

I'm not naive enough to think my kids will fully appreciate and enjoy and remember Disneyland, but I AM hopeful that meeting the actual real live Winnie The Pooh might make a certain two-year-old's year. (Of course, there's always the chance he'll run away screaming.) We're hoping Disneyland will be a fun payoff after such a long drive. We'll have no one to answer to but ourselves. I'm choosing hotels based solely on the awesomeness of the pool. We're setting low expectations: no big rides, no long days, just a lot of walking and looking and napping and splashing. We want to vacation WITH the kids, not just drag them along.

My list mostly reminds me that my kids aren't accessories or burdens or pets to be corralled and maintained and controlled, no matter my impulses. I'm one of those people who'd enjoy going to Disneyland anyway, but I can't WAIT to go there with my kids. Even if one is sleeping in the stroller and the other has no interest in Dumbo, who cares about Mickey, where is his ice cream cone? I will get him an ice cream cone because, seriously, before you are a parent you have NO IDEA how much you will love watching your kid eat an ice cream cone. Even if it ends up on his shoes.

I'm with you

My husband and I used to smugly say we would NEVER take our kids to Disneyland. We don't like crowds and long lines and are not particularly fond of all-Disney, all the time. We proudly said we would be the boring parents who just took their kids camping and hiking and to the Grand Canyon. Well, here we are considering a Disneyland trip. Because watching your child go bonkers with joy at meeting the "real" Cinderella just makes your little mommy heart go pitter-pat, whether you like to admit it or not. I'm impressed that you're trying a road trip to Cali and then Disneyland with kids at young ages, though. I think we're pretty much going to hold off on Disneyland for another year, at least, because our 1-year-old hates the car and also hates the stroller--thus meaning she'd make the rest of our lives miserable the whole time. I really look forward to hearing how it goes for your family--then I can tell my husband about it and convince him that we really need to take our kids.

soooo worth it

We were those parents who swore we wouldnt fall into the disney trap too and low and behold we are going back to disney this fall for the 3rd year in a row. Our 4 1/2 year old and our 3 1/2 yr old remember EVERY trip and LOVE watching videos of themselves. Even the now 1 year old was so excited meeting some of the characters when we went last year at the ripe old age of 6 months. Its expensive but worth every penny. We stay on site and the whole 9 yards.

I'm really excited to hear how it goes. Are you having Mickey Mouse pancakes? If we ever go to Disneyland I am fully prepared for Eli to be the most excited by some random thing he could have seen at home for free, like the shuttle from the parking lot to the front gates.

Oh, and PS...my trips to Disneyland with my dad every year were my very very favorite moments of the year. I remember going one year in college and calling my dad and telling him how boring it was, and he said "Someday you'll see it through your kids eyes and it will really cool all over again."

Have fun!

We have been to Walt Disney World every other year since our first was born 9 years ago (mostly because the in-laws live right there and we took advantage of discounts and conferences). Because we planned around the kids' ages, we had a nice time each visit. You have exactly the right attitude about it, and I would like to add the following advice that you can take or leave: 1) If you can get a room with a separate bedroom, it makes a huge difference for napping & parent sanity (Embassy Suites, Residence Inn, etc.). And they usually have a microwave and fridge. Totally worth any additional cost and actually saves on food costs. 2) Expect that the pool and any playground will be the most fun entertainment (sounds like you already get that). Second best will be any train/bus rides. Many of the "kids" rides are too scary for little ones, so if there's any question at all, just avoid them. 3) As soon as you get into the park, take the train around to the little kids area. Fewer people will be there and that's where the kids want to be anyway.

I Love Disney

We love Disney so much that we got married there. (But Disney World, not land.) Disney is a fantastic place for kid vacations. Make sure you do the Storybook land ride, it is my absolute favorite and your kids will love it. We live near Disney World and we take our six month old baby there all the time. (Not so much for her enjoyment yet though.) So if you want any Disney with baby tips, let me know!

We swore we wouldn't ......THEN....

I thoroughly enjoy Disney as an adult without kids. My husband and I swore we'd never take a child until they could walk all day on their own though. But, then an opportunity came to go to Orlando. WOW - she was barely walking. We went. The best memories ever (for me) and she has a scrapbook that she loves to look at, whether she remembers or not. It was Christmastime and wonderful. We'll do it again I'm sure, before she gives up that afternoon nap and stroller, but no regrets. People might think we're crazy, but we love it. Nothing like a child squealing when meeting Mickey!

Main Street Fever

Seriously, just thinking about walking through the front gates of Disneyland makes me giddy! That Main Street Disney fever kicks in and I actually feel like I am in the happiest place on earth (soo corny, but totally true). My husband has actually been laid off over the phone on Main Street Disney, we lost our middle child for 4 horrible minutes, and I have eaten 2 of those giant corndogs in one sitting; but through it all, i can't wait for our next trip there. Ironically Disneyland puts life into perspective for me. Like the ice cream cones, I actually appreciate my kiddos almost as much as they deserve in Disneyland.

I have never had the pleasure to go to Disney World, but I want my kids to be able to experience it. My oldest two are 10 and 9, and I have wanted to bring them since they were born. So now that we have our 9 month old we are going to finally make the trip. We are actually going for my birthday, and I could not ask for anything else in the world, than to see my kids faces at Disney.
