My Tree

By Rocks In My Dryer on Monday, December 22, 8:00 am EST

Last week I was flipping through a favorite magazine, one that regularly features impressive decorating. The Christmas issue is a feast for the eyes. In this issue, I flipped through one article, in particular, that shared some detailed photos of a family’s spectacular Christmas tree.

Let me tell you, these people are serious about their tree.

Every year, the article explained, their tree has a theme. A THEME! Sometimes it’s a color scheme. Sometimes it’s a motif, like candy or angels. It is perfectly color coordinated, there is an artfully arranged bow right at the top, and the shimmery strands of ribbon cascade at even intervals down the sides. It is a sight to behold. I expect if I went over to these people’s house, I would spend a good deal of time admiring their tree (with a theme! A THEME!)

And then I would get back in my car and drive home and curl up in my pajamas next to my tree.

My tree. My very imperfect tree.

My tree that is painfully lopsided because it was assembled this year by three boys under the age of twelve, who paused in their tree assembly only long enough to conduct sword fights with the branches.

My tree that, thanks to the lopsidedness, now has a book stuck under the front brace, but it’s okay, because it’s a Christmas book, so we’re just calling it a motif.

My tree with the silver snowflake ornaments, the ones that my husband’s grandmother gave to him. The ones that, some years, I manage to polish before hanging and most years I don’t so we just hang them anyway, tarnish and all.

My tree that doesn’t have a garland on it because we forgot it.

My tree, which holds my favorite (and very banged up) Mrs. Claus ornament from my childhood. The one my brother and I fought over hanging every year, but I win (!), because it’s on my tree now.

My tree which occasionally stinks, because the cheeky four-year-old girl in the house has been known to hide sippy cups deep in the branches.

My tree that has several construction-paper-and-glitter ornaments made by little fingers, most featuring a school photo of a snaggle-toothed kid.

My tree. My very imperfect tree.

There is no theme, unless hodge-podge is a theme. There is certainly very little about it that would be considered artful. But I wouldn’t trade it for all the perfect trees in all the perfect magazines, because it’s a bearer of memories and tarnish and chipped paint and fingerprints from my family’s past.

It is mine. And that’s enough.

Trees

My tree is the same way. It's real and so once we get our hodge-podge of presents under it, it ceases to be waterable and so starts losing needles also. But, I wouldn't trade it for the world. Most of the ornaments on it tell a story or remind me of Christmases past. I get all sentimental decorating it. My mom keeps "threatening" to send me all the ornaments from my childhood and I say, bring it on! Then it will be hodge-podge from my life, 1970's through (maybe) 2070's :)!

Your tree does too have a theme.....Memories! Or maybe "Love". :) Our tree is the same way!

Me, too.

Our tree's theme is the same as yours...hodge podge! And I love it. I had to laugh at your tarnished ornaments comment, because about every three years I think our silver star and one silver snowflake ornament look bad enough that I should do something about it. I blogged about my favorite ornaments this year! http://tiny.cc/gco1E I do dream of someday having one tree that is full of our favorites, and one that is, ahem, a bit more decorative...

We had a Christmas candy and gift exchange at my 2nd mother's house last night...her main tree is beautiful...with all cut glass and crystal decorations on it...it absolutely sparkles with the clear white lights casting prisms through wee church steeples and various shapes of blown glass ornaments... my tree is the hodge podge of my children and assorted homemade treasures that have survived several moves and mice in the attic... but it is a treasure all the same.... Oma has a smaller tree on her mantle that is a hodge podge of her children's and grandchildren's various handicrafts, from shrinky dinks to glittered cutouts... I loved that idea!

Your tree sounds.....perfect.

Ah,

Your tree sounds just like ours (minus the sippy cups--haven't had those around the house in years). Everyone thinks because I'm "artsy" that I would have the type of tree you described from the magazine. I can tell people are a little surprised the first time they see our tree. But I wouldn't want it any other way. I think I must have learned from my parents. They still put out my glitter and macaroni covered tennis shoe with the plastic holly flower stuck in styrofoam in the mouth of the shoe Christmas "decoration" that I made 35 years ago!

We do more than one tree,

We do more than one tree, generally. Just so when I go from room to room picking up laundry and redistributing lost toys I can remember that this is a lovely, wonderous season. Take heart. Our house full of trees come in all shapes and sizes, made from aluminum in the '50s and painted lumber with rag ties. But always, the tree given the greatest honor is the one that leans more this year than last. The one that sports an odd assortment of memories, some old, some new. The one the children need to be able to walk around, hang more handmade treasures on, lie under. The one that won't have presents under it until moments before the unwrapping begins thanks to the eager three year old whose face lights up at the sight of wrapping paper, ribbons and bows. There isn't a theme like those of designers in the glossy magazines. WE would never meet their standards for design, beauty, execution. But our tree makes us smile, remember other times, the loves in our lives, and the reason for this chilly, beautiful season. And that is good enough for me. And I wouldn't have it any other way!

Perfect Trees

My husband is a nut about themes and matching trees, that perfectly coordinate with the glass thingies filled with matching decorations. We always get compliments on the decorating. Usually, I get the compliment. (I didn't decorate though, since I'm a mismatched, lopsided sorta gal).

*tear*

when I was young and single and silly, I wanted *the* perfect tree. It all had to be silver, with white lights - no blinking. My wrapping paper had to match, as did the ribbons I put on my packages. The skirt HAD to be plain white, with nothing that would distract from my *perfect* tree. Now, some years and 3 kids later, my tree is rather bare. I refuse to put anything on it that doesn't MEAN something. I buy my kids a relevant ornament each year. This year my oldest got an ice skate for her first year in skating lessons, my middle daughter got a butterfly in relation to her current obsession, and my son got his "Baby's First Christmas" ornament to kick-off his collection. My skirt has handprints cut out of fabric (leopard, plaids and prints) and sewn on with puffy paints identifying the owners of the print and the year it was made. I've said quite a few "awwww....remember...." putting up our tree this year. The lights are *gasp* colored and from my grandparents. Although it went up fast, the kiddos seem to be growing up faster. And no tree could be more prefect than this.

Banding of the hodge podge trees

My tree is probably lacking any kind of cohesiveness this year, but I love that we made almost all our ornaments or salvaged them from old present tags. My children and I will remember it for always!

Keeping the Tree Alive

We have a live tree, too, and a gazillion boxes under it. To keep the tree fresh, we just make the 9yo tunnel in each morning and water it. It's like watching a WWII prison-break movie. Love the sippy cups!!

Now that my youngest is 6, this is the first year it seems that all the ornaments are still on the tree after 2 weeks. It's kinda nice. Now, they still didn't place the ornaments very evenly or in very good places, and the dead branches are drooping, and I wish I would have put on more lights, and it still looks kind of dumpy, but the ornaments are all still on. And I can foresee some day that maybe the desire to participate in tree decoration myself will return. But right now I'm happy to let them all do it in their own "special" way.

hmmm when i think of perfect trees i cant help but wonder what fills the heart near them...cause such a pristine tree cannot be filled with the love and memories and heart that fills my lean to, sparkly, mismatched ornaments, filled with love tree. steff
