Half a Mom

By Daring Young Mom on Wednesday, October 14, 5:11 pm EDT

We’re into Dan’s second week of paternity leave and I’ve decided that I love being half of a stay-at-home mom. Our relationship and parenting style has come to resemble something like doubles beach ball volleyball minus the teeny bikinis.

I do the breastfeeding and Dan takes over for the belch and diaper change. I sleep in late while he packs the kids’ lunches, gets them dressed, feeds them breakfast, and takes them to school. He takes an afternoon nap while I play a game with Magoo, and then he wakes up in time to get Laylee from the bus stop. He loads the dishwasher and I unload. He sets the table for the food-eaters among us while I feed the baby AGAIN. You get the idea.

Most of the time the division of labor flows seamlessly -- largely because my female equipment makes my baby duties pretty clear. So while my mammaries are being flexed, Dan does whatever else needs to be done.

I’ve spent almost 7 years doing the work of a whole mom and I’m not sure I want to go back to that kind of life. I think all stay-at-home parents should come in twos. One to wash the laundry, one to fold. One to read books of dinosaur facts and the other to assist with piano practice. One to make lunch while the other plans dinner. No one would get worn out. You’d just jump in when you were fresh and the ball was coming your way. “I go. I go,” you’d call as you went in for the dig and then your partner would set you up for a wicked spike.

I guess what I’d really like is for some wealthy benefactor to step in and offer to support Dan and I in this lifestyle for the next 5-10 years. In return, I’d promise to always let the investor win at Candyland and provide her with unlimited homemade cinnamon rolls for life. I’d have time to do things like that because I’d only be half a stay-at-home mom, you see?

The best part of our current arrangement is: I only have to shower every other day. Dan does it the rest of the time.

Aren't awesome husbands great? My husband can walk in the door from work and tell from my facial expression whether he needs to take over the house or take over the baby. Sometimes both. It's delightful, really.

I totally agree! On all of it! YOu were just writing what I was thinking! Oh, how well that would work. But the showering part is most familiar to me:-)

I have been wondering for a long time if we could arrange some kind of grant. A study on how having both parents at home affects children. The grant could pay our living expenses and bills, and we could let our kids be the test subjects....what do you think? We should get a group together, because I would sure love to have my husband here all the time!

Division of labor

My husband is a grad student and we have a pretty nice split on the parenting and on the money earning thing. He works part-time; I work part-time. We both do laundry, meals, grocery shopping, cleaning.... It has been sooooo wonderful during my pregnancy to have him around more. Of course, someday he'll have to get a "real" job and then things will be different.

The fun doesn't end. My husband took today off from work today which means he got the kids up and out this morning. I did the laundry and he got them off the bus after school. What's even more exciting is that as I type this, he is now schlepping my 6 yr. old to dance! Nothing better if you ask me!

Hummmm, the whole time I was reading this I was thinking... Wow, I guess polygamy does have some benefits. You could be the senior wife and give the nasty motherhood tasks to the lesser wives. Or it could also be an argument for cloneing - providing that they also have some type of miracle grow for humans out there. Yes, you turned out to be the perfect spouce - I'll take two of you. Kidding of course! Love that Dan's around to give you a little break. Enjoy every moment of it.

I've always thought the same thing. I would love to share a house with my sister-in-law. Kind of like Polygamy except we each have our own husbands. But we share a kitchen and have separate living space. Each wife helps out with all the duties. Sounds wonderful.

You are very lucky to have such a helpful hubby. A close male friend of mine took an entire year off to be a stay at home dad for his daughter's first year. He loved it and was great for mom as well as she could easily slip back into her career which was very important to her. I suppose if you can't have both parents on an extended leave its always nice to see hubby fill in so that they can bond as well.
