Gummy Boy

By Rocks In My Dryer on Monday, September 22, 10:48 am EDT

With a new baby, there are a lot of delicious little parts to captivate a mom. Those tiny fingers are irresistible; the chubby feet are soft and kissable. But, for some reason, the little part that always held the most wonderment for me was those tiny pink gums. And a toothless baby smile? My biological clock trembles at the memory.

I always felt wistful when the first tooth appeared. That sweet little pink ridge of gumminess was suddenly broken up by an intruder. No more toothless grins.

But that’s okay, because with the baby tooth comes the early childhood years, and could there ever be a sweeter time? T-ball and first dance lessons and learning to ride a bike – oh yes, those are priceless days.

That time passes quickly, of course. No sooner does a mother get used to that mouth full of teeth than they start falling out, often in waves.

My seven-year-old son Joseph had some especially hard-working gums last week. First it was a front bottom tooth, then its direct partner on the top. And then the other top front tooth started wiggling. Joseph began working on it in earnest – he was a man on a mission. Managing to have three holes in the front of your mouth all at the same time is no small feat of dental logistics. He crowed, “If I pull this one I’ll have a hole in front! I’ll be able to drink through a straw with my teeth together!” It’s the stuff dreams are made of when you’re seven.

Days and days of tooth wiggling made the tooth looser, but (to his dismay) it would not come out. He was so desperate he almost let his big brother talk him into tying the tooth to a doorknob, something I assured him only really works in Three Stooges episodes.

But it turned out we didn’t need any gimmicks; what we needed was a second-grade teacher. One afternoon after school last week, Joseph bounded out to the car, eyes shining and face flushed. His lips were pressed tightly together, waiting for the perfect moment in the drama to flash me his new smile.

“Mithuth Jackthon pulled my tooth,” he explained. Oh, my heart, he has a lisp now? How much cuteness can a mother’s heart be expected to bear?

I leaned in for a closer look.

And there it was. It was an instant flashback. That same gummy grin I sighed over years ago was looking right back at me, though this time its bearer isn’t a baby, but a boy, with smelly sneakers and permanently banged-up knees.

But I’d still know it anywhere.

Summer before last my

Summer before last my daughter had 1 tooth missing (which she was very proud of) and had another 2 that were very loose. However, due to an accident on a slide she got a few more knocked out than she bargained for - her top 4 and bottom 4 were gone. She cried that day more because she said she wasn't beautiful any more than she did from the pain I think. She refused to have her picture taken for the next year. When school picture time came around the 2 bottom middle teeth were about half grown in and it looked just like my 18 month old twins with their little gummy smiles with just those 2 tiny adorable teeth showing. At first she was refusing to have the picture taken, so I told her she didn't have to smile, but she HAD to have the picture taken. Unfortunately for her the photographer was hilarous and he caught her smiling when she laughed at his antics. She wanted to throw the pictures away and was crushed because she didn't have anything to trade with her classmates. So what is a mother to do? I took her picture with my digital camera, photoshopped in some teeth and printed a bunch for her to exchange with her friends. In the meantime I treasure the toothless photos the most....

That is great. And so true.

That is great. And so true. Now, if we could only get that sweet baby bald head smell back, too. Delicious.

Oh, how you make me cry!

I'm on the cusp of these teeth falling out years...my oldest being 4. I'm gonna go squeeze my 8 month old and catch some of those gummy grins before they're gone! Loved this post, Shannon!

I, too, am a fan of those gummy smiles and that sweet baby breath.

First day back after mat leave, and I'm sniffling at my desk.

The gummy grin has a direct line to my heartstrings... My little 5-month-old boy is always smiling, because he knows that's how to get his momma to do his bidding ;-) Thanks for this post - it's just what I needed today.

How precious is that, Shannon? My oldest is five and we have yet to experience that milestone. I am in no hurry.

My oldest, Noah, just lost his first tooth a couple weeks ago. The top front- and the other front tooth is barely hanging. I know it's going to look so cute. But oh my, that toothless grin! I am in baby bliss with my one week old little girl- best of both worlds, I tell you! Steph

Gummy Bears!

Oh, I miss the Gummy Bear Smiles! You're right though, Mama's know their Gummy Bears at any age. The night my oldest son lost his first tooth I sat down and shed a tear at the memory of his first Gummy smile for me. Sigh. Ahhh, memories!

All I Want for Christmas . . .
9/23/2008 at 12:24 am
I am a SUCKER for little ones with teeth missing! When I taught elementary music, every Christmas I gathered all the children in the entire school who had their two front teeth missing, and I taught them "All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth" for the Christmas program. It was PRECIOUS! I had one little boy - bless his heart - who had lost his top four teeth due to decay when he was only four years old. (Mama put him to bed with a bottle when he was a baby.) Anyway, his permanent teeth were extremely slow in coming in, so he ended up singing the song every year for 3 years! In third grade, he finally said, "Teacher, do I have to sing that song again?" (I didn't have the heart to ask him to do it again.) He finally got teeth in 4th grade! Other gummy grins I remember were those of a little boy and girl I taught who were physically and mentally handicapped. Many of their teeth had been removed to prevent their biting their lips and tongues when their little bodies had spasms. They both loved music and would grin from ear to ear when I sang to them, flashing those sweet, gummy smiles. Those were precious moments, as both children died during my last year of teaching.

When my brother witnessed
9/23/2008 at 2:13 am
When my brother witnessed the arrival of Tooth Fairy Money from my dental adventures, he figured it would be a great money-maker. He and the neighbor boy Thad got out the pliers. They had managed to seriously loosen three of Thad's (unloose) teeth by the time someone wondered what they were up to. My brother got in Massive Big Trouble. Thad's teeth fell out, and took forever to come back in.

Three Stooges

Actually, that tying the tooth to a door and slamming it does work. I did it when I was eight. The string broke the first time, so I decided to do it again! It worked but hurt like the dickens!! Maybe I'm a stooge too.

Gums...

Oh, I have said the very same thing about those pink gums. And when the teeth start arriving, it changes their look so dramatically. Of course, they are cute at every stage but my mommy heart goes pitter-patter at the sight of the gums. Maybe it is God's way of making them extra cute when they are wailing at 3am?
