Exercise Regime

By Notes From the Trenches on Tuesday, July 10, 6:00 am EDT

I am on Day Three of my new exercise program.

Day Four if you count the day I pulled my running shoes out of the back of my closet and dusted them off. I am inclined to count it as they did have quite a bit of dust on them that needed to be cleaned off.

Day Five if you count buying new running socks. Everyone knows that the first step to establishing an exercise regime is shopping. First for trying on clothes in your size that no longer fit. Sob. And second for buying some actual needed exercise item, like socks.

Exercise is second in line only to my hatred of board games. I hate it. I hate sweating. I hate exerting myself. My idea of a perfect run is from the couch to the refrigerator for a cold diet Coke.

I have a short attention span so I am usually bored and ready to quit after about five minutes. I came home on Day Two and told my husband that was why I could never be a marathon runner. He raised his eyebrows and said, "Really? That's why?"

Uh, YES. The fact that my rear end slaps my shoulder blades when I run and that I feel like I might keel over and die 24.2 miles shorter than a marathon has nothing to do with it.

Where was I? Oh yes. See this is what I mean about the short attention span.

I then spend the next 25 minutes of my run/walk/gasping for air mentally telling myself how much it sucks, wondering where that runner's high is that other people talk about, questioning if perhaps I just come from a long line of terminally lazy people. And therefore it really wouldn't be my fault. It would be my mother's fault! Her and her faulty genes. I could live with that excuse.

Unfortunately I also got her expanding midsection and an insatiable sweet tooth.

It's really not easy to get

It's really not easy to get into a fitness regimen on a consistent basis. Most of the time, the enthusiasm just fades out until laziness conquers your whole mind. One of the best ways to counter this is to make yourself be accountable to others such as your husband or a close friend if you miss out on your regimen.

I have battled this

I have battled this "syndrome" for quite a while. For a while I battled a knee injury and it was a great excuse for not exercising. When I finally got surgery to fix it I realized the excuses were no longer valid. I then got it in my mind that this has to be a long term health issue. If I don't make this a habit I will have major problems as the years go by. I don't necessarily enjoy working out but have come to grips with it by using this long term fear factor. Once you get over the initial out of shape period I do find myself enjoying the sweat and adrenaline high at about the 20 minute mark on the elliptical. Other than that, thats about as exciting as it gets in terms of my workouts... but if you weigh the alternative it will hopefully push you through.

I really hear you. Running in order to be able to run farther and faster the next day always seemed pointless to me, too. But of course it's important. How about finding some kind of exercise that is more motivating to you? I hate to exercise, but in my late 20's I joined a Kung Fu school and got in the best shape of my life -- until I had kids. But I hope to return someday. It was so much fun. Good luck!

I totally agree!!! Running when you are not being chased by something is pointless. (If you can't tell by that comment, I inherited an exploding mid-section and craving for sweets as well.)

Oh, gosh, I could not agree more! I want to exercise, but can't seem to bring myself to actually do it. I agree with the Kung Fu. I did that in my 20's, too. Keyword is 20's...

It's different from me. Nobody likes running, or exercise for that matter, when you have to drag yourself to do it. I have no problem running for 2-3 times a week not because I like to run without being chased, but more for the 'highs' I get out of running. I feel relaxed, more focused, and sometimes I get a lot of ideas for my work when I run. Think of the of the rewards and you'll feel motivated.

Yes, let's blame our mothers (our kids will blame us one day, right?). I'm not up for exercise either - I'd much rather sit here on my butt and read about other people not exercising :). But alas, I think I'll have to one day if I want to avoid a heart attack or some other evil health ailment. When you run, think of me - won't that count as my exercise?

Yup, running sucks, I agree. But what about walking? I like fast walking, very much. I like to put on headphones and play one fast-paced song, over and over again, and walk on a treadmill, to the beat of my chosen fast song. It's almost like marching or dancing and it isn't hard on my knees. Try it!!

I am so with you! I despise exercise. Sometimes I think I'd rather be poked in the eye with something sharp. I did Winsor Pilates last night - the first exercise I've done it MONTHS because, well, I make GREAT excuses. I felt like a total spaz. Exercise is just not my thing. Come to think of it, I don't really have a "thing".

I know what you mean! I was so athletic in high school, and I am so very, very un-athletic now, my kids think I'm joking when I tell them about the sports I played back then. My 9-yr-old saw an old picture of 16-yr-old me playing hockey and gasped, "That's not you! You're much squishier!" Ugh. My current exercise regime is carrying an 8-month-old on one hip and a 2 1/2 yr old on the other. I guess it's not working...

I have started running again too. I dont diet, I would rather workout so I can eat, (cookie dough and potato chips are always on my mind) Unfortunately as I am getting a little older I have noticed my metabolism is SLOWING down and running every once in a while is not enough. This is very dis-heatening. I laughed till tears at your rear comment, do you think that counts as todays workout? If so thank you! ~Heidi

I could've written this post myself (although not as well as you!). My motto, when it comes to running, is, ONLY RUN IF YOU ARE BEING CHASED.

I've taken up running again. I don't recommend doing a 5K race any time soon though. It's rather sad when a bunch of 60 year old women beat your time by like 10 minutes.

I love to work out. Even if you can't tell by looking at me. I try not to tell people that I go to the gym five days a week because they just look at me all confused and wonder if I'm spending all my time at the snack bar. That would be the gym snack bar where they sell cookies and ice cream and pizza. And NO that's not what I'm doing there!

Ah, see I love working out. I prefer weights but love to run too. I like lifting because it makes me feel like I can whip the world! LOL!

My husband took up running about two years ago... and is officially crazy. CRAZY. Marathon crazy. I told him that there was no way I could do anything as long as it takes to run a marathon. And the only two reasons I would run would be 1) if a bear was chasing me, and 2) if there were chocolate chip cookies at the finish line. Maybe that's why I'm fat.

I work in a gym and a certified personal trainer and I hate to run. I believe exercise should be somethig you enjoy doing and looking forward to do. I like to walk my dog and make an adventure out of it. I also like to lift weights, which burns alot of calories also, swimming, hiking and gardening. So running isn't the only way to burn those calories. If you hate it, your not going to stick with it.

***VERY IMPORTANT INFO***PLEASE READ AND PASS ON... ZURICH (GERBER IN THE USA) HAS RECALLED ABOUT 1/2 MILLION PACKS OF ORGANIC RICE AND OATMEAL CEREAL FOR BABIES DUE TO A CHOKING RISK!!! They say that the cereal may not dissolve properly in milk or water. The products were sold in the US, Puerto Rico and the Carribean says the company. Everyone check your baby cereal! THIS IS HORRIBLE.

My horrible in-laws (who are actually very wonderful people) got us a TREADMILL for Christmas. A really nice one. Like 'lose 30 pounds or this baby's not worth it' nice. Ugh. It's just so much easier to eat popcorn and watch a movie, you know?
