Confessions of a Coupon-Clipping Novice

By Mighty Maggie on Thursday, June 26, 11:00 am EDT

Ever since I quit my job and became a Stay At Home Mom, my husband and I have tried to stick to a budget. The operative word is TRIED. I don't know that we've ever succeeded. Geeks that we are, we've spent hours entering our financial information into money management programs, coding fancy Excel spreadsheets, and testing out those free online services that help you track where your paycheck is going. But it doesn't matter how complicated our Excel formulas are, they aren't much help when you stop updating the spreadsheet two weeks later.

Fortunately for us, our spending habits have changed, just by virtue of becoming parents. You don't go out much when the smallest person in your household goes to bed at seven. I try to restrain myself at Target, my husband decides he doesn't really need that 500 inch television, and somehow we make it work.

Even though I've been too lazy to try, I've always been interested in the finer points of frugality. For the longest time, I've been subscribing to those money-saving blogs. You know, the ones where the moms post diaper and formula deals, or what store has baby shoes for 50% off. For a while I was even reading sites where they tell you how to go to the drugstore and buy thirty-seven items for something like three bucks. They use acronyms like BOGO and ECB and I've always thought these women were CRAZY. I mean, who has time to figure all that out?

Lately, though – in case you haven't heard – we are living in Dire Times. Gas prices! Food prices! Home foreclosures! Watching the nightly news is enough to send you diving under the covers and wondering how warm that cardboard box will be in the winter.

So I've been rethinking my approach to keeping our costs down. I've taken to writing down how much I spend at the grocery store on the calendar, the lowest-tech way to watch where our money is going! I'm paying more attention to the clearance racks, trying out all the store brands and oh, what a sad day it was when I put back that gorgeous pair of shoes.

But then I was looking through the Sunday paper this weekend and, for the first time, I didn't automatically toss the ads in the recycling. Oh, I look at ads for certain stores, but you know those circulars full of random coupons for every kind of product out there? I never look at those. Ever! Except this weekend I thought, "Maybe there's something we need?" And I cut out a dollar off coupon for swim diapers, something I've been meaning to buy now that summer has finally arrived in the Pacific Northwest. I took this coupon with me on my latest trip to Target, where swim diapers happened to be on sale. With the sale and my coupon I saved two whole dollars. Big deal, right? Except two dollars adds up, people. Two dollars here, fifty cents here, and suddenly I'm wondering if I'm not too lazy to be a coupon clipper after all.

Getting your swim diapers for cheaper than the SALE price will put a little spring in your coupon-clipping step. Now I'm combing through the paper and printing out coupons I find online. I file them in neatly labeled envelopes and before my weekly shopping trip today I'm going to bust out my envelopes see how much money I'm going to save. I feel like the biggest dork saying this, but it's actually kind of fun. Fast times in the life of a stay at home mom!

Oh man, I totally understand

Oh man, I totally understand the need for frugality. I just found out yesterday that my office is closing and I am 99% that I am going to lose my job in the next 3 months.
It's just awful, and a scary time to be looking for a job in this economy. Gulp.

If you REALLY want to go

If you REALLY want to go crazy, join one of the coupon programs that will churn out a spreadsheet each week of local deals combined with the Sunday and online coupons. The one I'm in costs $20/month but I more than save that each week and it's worth it to be able to print out just the deals I'm interested in then hunt for those coupons and hit the stores. Oh, and did you know that WalGreen's has a monthly booklet in-store that lists all their rebate deals? You can usually get several items for free (and if you have a coupon, that's cash to you!!). If you take the rebate in the form of a gift card, they give you an extra 10% back. LOL. The whole thing takes being a stay at home mom geek to new levels.

I'm uncertain about coupons
6/26/2008 at 1:01 pm
Those mom-coupon sites confuse me too. The thing for me is, the coupons in the paper are usually for name brand stuff, and I usually only buy generic brand stuff. I've compared, and even with the coupon, the generic is usually cheaper. My kids can't tell if their Mac n Cheese is the kind that claims to be "The Cheesiest!" or not. Plus, I don't have the time or patience to haul my three kids all over town going from store to store to get a good deal on one thing at one store, another thing at another store. Maybe I'm totally not getting the coupon thing and if I just tried a little harder I'd really be saving my family all kinds of money. For right now, I'm not convinced.

Coupons + Walmart = savings!

I know some people are opposed to Wal Mart for many reasons, but you really can save money there. Wal Mart will honor sale prices from any other store for the same item (same size, and name brand for name brand, or store brand for store brand, even with different stores). I take the fliers from other store with me when I go grocery shopping at Wal Mart and I get the deals from 5 different stores without driving all around town. If you throw in coupon savings on top of that, you can get some great deals. I stocked up on Honey Bunches of Oats for 6 cents a box a few weeks ago doing this.

Saving money

I'm with you Frugal Mom. Given the gas prices, not to mention the wear and tear on the family vehicle, it makes no sense to go from store to store with coupons to save a dollar here and 50 cents there. Great idea about taking the fliers to Walmart. I'm sure there are other stores who would do the same thing. Sure saves a lot of running around.

computer coupons

Just a thought- I've been denied computer printed out coupons at my grocery store. They say- and I understand where they are coming from- that people are printing and photo copying or even doctoring computer printer coupons. Just something to be aware of when you arrive at certain stores!

I have been following store circulars and using lots of coupons and i am saving alot everymonth. I used to spend 75-90 dollars a week and now i can spend 50-65 dollars by using coupons. I don't go out of my way driving to stores. I use the Kroger and Meijer by my house along with CVS. I have gotten so many things FREE this month. Saving money on groceries is the only thing i feel i can control right now with prices on everything so high. Check out my new site as I am getting started to blog about the success of savings. www.sensationalsavings@blogspot.com Thanks Linda

Wow! Thanks Frugal Mom and AmyL. I'm a 1st time mom and 20 months after our 1st child, I'm also a full-time wife/mommy. But, man! Our grocery bill has been out of hand seeing as how I'm in the kitchen more. WalGreens is one of my favorite quick-stops so it's good to know about their monthly booklet. Time and time again, after a wearisome trip to Wal-Mart, I realize something was left off the list that WalGreens would have. I do the coupon-clipping, but forgot all about Wal-Mart's policy to honor other's coupons! That is absolutely mag! I can't wait to see how this new info translates to saving my family money.

Coupons - cash back or rebate savings on purchases
7/12/2008 at 7:38 pm
Coupons are a great way to save money, but I wish they can find a away to pass on the savings without the need to keep a drawer full of all these papers. Maybe, a pre-loaded coupon card with cash back or rebate savings built-in to the card everytime you buy the item.

I am so desperate to save money these days that I look for coupon savings that other people throw out. Sometimes I trade coupons with some of my mom friends at my church.

started out as a hobby and now it's a necessity to clip coupons
10/25/2008 at 4:40 pm
With the economy being so bad,gas prices...I always hated to clip coupons .I was just too lazy. I always did all my grocery shopping at Walmart and thought it was the cheapest.About 40% of my groceries are generic brands also. My weekly grocery bill was usually at least $170 a week for a family of 4.My husband just got laid off a week ago and I work from my home not making much money.I started clipping coupons about 3 weeks ago.I decided to go and check out 2 more grocery stores on the same avenue Publix,Albertsons and Walmart. I bought all my meat at Albertsons and saved about 40% just in meat. They had specials 88 cents for split breasts,$2.99 pk of lean ground turkey. Buy 3 cereals for $8 and get a gallon of milk for free! Publix had the fewest sales but still cheaper than Walmart on Eggs and butter.I spent a total of $125 instead of the average $170. The list of items was huge. I'm making dinner meals for 4 people from $3.75-$5 for dinner. I've been printing coupons from everywhere I can find online and it has NOT been so simple but I'm going to save around $180-$200 a month that can go towards utility bills! I have a long way to go before I am a coupon pro lol One of the best deals so far is $1 Off Cresent Rolls. The pack was $1.74 and it came out to .74 cents :) Buy one get one free Pedigree dog food was also a good deal...

I never clipped coupons before, but the current economy, and some personal events caused me to rethink. I try not to be crazy about, and spend only a couple of hours a week on it. All depends on how much you value your time. I save probably $20-$40 a week, depending on how good the particular coupons are, so it's worth my time.

A no brainer in tough times

My wife has always done this and I thought she was crazy. Now that these tough times are here I get it. So many people are going to such great lengths to save money. This is a no brainer!
