Beauty and Truth

By Rocks In My Dryer on Monday, September 21, 5:29 pm EDT

At my sons’ elementary school, there is a themed art contest underway. Students are given a theme (this year it’s “Beauty Is…”), and can they product any piece of art, literature, music, photography, etc. to fit creatively with the theme.

At dinner the other night, we discussed what their possible entries might be. “So boys,” I asked them, “tell me what you think is beautiful.”

(Let me pause to tell you that I have been parenting sons for over 12 years, and yes, I realize that discussions with pre-adolescent boys about the nature of art and beauty is about as fruitful as discussing calculus with an giraffe. However, it had been a long day, I was in desperate need of a good laugh, and so I went for it.)

The ten-year-old piped up first. “SOCCER!” he shouted. “Soccer is beautiful. In Europe, they call it The Beautiful Game.”

Europe? Why, that’s just almost qualifies as culture, I’d say. I began to hope.

But not for long.

“Canada is beautiful, because they have that really good bacon,” offered the eldest, “and also Sasquatch.”

“Also hot dogs and monkeys,” offered the eight-year-old, and he punctuated it with a resounding burp.

“And that. THAT was beautiful,” he said.

(Ah, yes. Hairy beasts and bodily functions. Now we’re back to familiar ground.)

Despite his questionable contribution to the discussion, the eight-year-old was still eager to participate, wondering if he could submit a photograph to the contest. “Of course,” I told him, handing over my camera and giving instructions. “Take a picture of what you think is beautiful.”

He did. And he said I could share the results.

First, his foot:

Then, a self portrait of his favorite shirt:

Weaponry, of course:

A sunny sky through his favorite backyard tree:

His other foot:

A dusty old row of traffic cones:

And still more weaponry:

What would your kids call beautiful?

I am not a mother yet, but am the proud aunt of 8 boys (and 6 girls). I would love to do an experiment like this with all of them...give each child, boys and girls, cameras and tell them to take pics of what they think is beautiful. I can envision it now...the girls would take pics of flowers, each other, puppies, kittens, butterflies...they boys would take pics of chewed gum on the pavement, dirty sneakers, very used & dirty soccer/basketballs, road kill, snakes/worms/other bugs, dog behinds, bloody wounds, fish hanging from hooks, etc. No matter what anyone may say, there is a difference between boys & girls. I see it every day! I really enjoyed this blog entry. Thanks,

It is amazing to see things through a child's eyes. My daughter 19 months old and is in awe of grass right now. It is the most amazing thing she has ever seen. We were at a ball game and she found a big grassy spot to run and play in. She bent all the way down until the grass tickled her nose and then stood back up to run again. As I watched her it made me want to stop to enjoy the beauty of a late summer day in a grassy field.

My four year old would say Macaroni & Cheese. And my 7 year old would say glitter. Love the conversation between your boys. I hope you're saving all their gems in a way that you can give it back to them when they're older.

Those cones ARE beautiful! I think I'll have to grab a couple disposable camera's and turn the children loose with them... Might end up with some fantastic material (or a lot of pictures of feet)

Well one out of seven of

Well one out of seven of those pictures isn't bad. He got the tree with the sunny sky coming through so that must mean he has a sensitive side right? I wonder how wildly different this test would be with girls. I just assume a bunch of flowers and sparkly things. I'm still laughing at these photos. Funny stuff!
