Back to School Can Only Mean One Thing: Panic

By Mommy Needs Coffee on Tuesday, August 12, 12:21 pm EDT

Somewhere between the celebration of the last day of school and today, the calendar quickly flipped through June and July and has now landed on mid-August. That led to just one thing in my house. Panic.

It isn’t so much the kids who are in a state of back-to-school panic, but I am in the midst of it. Wait! I am not ready. Where did those hours go that I was going to use to de-clutter and organize the kids’ rooms? What happened to the free time I was going to spend getting myself ready for all of the PTA duties that lie ahead? How did time go by so fast that suddenly the kids have outgrown their clothes and we find ourselves in a rush to get those much beloved new outfits for school? (Beloved by me. Dreaded by the kids.) I had a plan. A plan, people!

The plan was lost somewhere between a vacation to the beach for two weeks, a week out of town for me, and the lazy days of summer when we felt we had all the time in the world to get ready. I don’t regret a moment of the time we spent just enjoying the freedom of being without much of a schedule this summer. In fact, I live for those times when we don’t have to schedule every moment of every day in order to get each kid where he or she needs to be – on time.

This year, my three kids are in three different schools. That means my life of chaos has become a life of chaos in triplicate. Three sets of forms. (Where did I put those?) Three different drop-off times. (Who has to be at which school at what time?) Three different PTAs with three different volunteer times. (When do those meetings start again?) And of course, three sets of school supplies. Thankfully, two of the three schools offer them, so that saves me some travel time to every store in my city to find the exact notebooks, pencils, and books required.

Come to think of it, the only one in panic mode is me.

The kids are just in a blissful state of denial.

Their thought process is much different than mine. It's more along the lines of, "No way does school start in two weeks. I can stay up all night and sleep all day." (Panic for mom! Get them on a schedule STAT.) They feel they have all the time in the world to get their rooms “school ready,” which in our family means many things. Rooms cleaned. ("I want to see your floor again!") And organized. ("Do not ask me where your jeans are. Hang them up!") And a cleared-off desk. ("You really don’t need to have last year’s notes still on your desk. You don’t need them!") They seem to think that none of this matters. Why? Because, “Mooooom, it is still summer!”

Perhaps back-to-school in our house can only mean one thing — MOM panics. Can I have my summer back?

My daughter starts preschool this fall so this is our first back to school season. While I can't wait to buy her clothes and school supplies, I still find myself wondering, like you, where in the world my summer went.

My girl's elementary school

My girl's elementary school sends home an order form for all necessary supplies at the end of the school year. You fill it out, send it back with a check and pick up everything you need the week before school begins. Label and load backpack. The only thing we need is a new pair of indoor shoes, a few pair of new tights and a lunchbox. ("And snacks" which is as much a plea from my husband as my child). The dance class scheduling and the skipping club and the swim lessons for the fall are more daunting. School is a snap.

Back to school has hit us like a freight train. I'm usually much more prepared than this!

Back to school - Internet Safety Habits

Back from vacations means also more time on the Internet for kids. If you want to get educated about Internet safety for your kids (protection against child pornography, identity theft, online scams etc) I would suggest an excellent ebook here: INTERNET SAFETY - A Parent's Guide. Take a look for your kids online safety.

A great breakfast for busy mornings

I recently received an e-mail from my uncle with the greatest idea ever! I plan to use this when my 2 older boys go back to school. Ziploc Omelets This works great!!! Good for when you're alone or when all your family is together. The best feature is that no one has to wait for their special omelet. Have the guests write their name on a Quart Size Ziploc Freezer Bag with a permanent marker. 1. Crack 2 eggs into the quart size Ziploc bag (not more than 2) shake to combine them. 2. Put out a variety of ingredients such as: Cheeses, Ham, Onions, Green Peppers, Tomatoes, Hash Browns, Salsa, Jalapenos, Mushrooms, Etc. 3. Each guest adds prepared ingredients of choice to their bag and shake the bag to mix them well.? 4. Make sure to get the air out of the bag and zip it up. 5. Place the bags into rolling, boiling water for exactly 13 minutes. You can usually cook 6-8 omelets in a large pot. If you have more omelets, make another pot of boiling water. 6. Cut the bags and the omelet will roll out easily. Be pre pared for everyone to be amazed. Imagine how easy it will be to mix these up the night before zip the top and place in the fridge- then while dressing your son/daughter for school, all you have to do is boil the water and throw the bag in the water- 13 minutes later a healthy breakfast! no butter or grease to keep the eggs from sticking! easy clean-up! And I tried this this morning and it was GREAT! my oldest doesnt even like eggs and he ate it! try it!

blissful denial

I tried doing that blissful denial thing, like the kids do - it was great until the day before school started and then I thought I was going to DIE from an 18 hour prepare for back to school marathon of shopping and stressing.
