Are You Potty Ready?

By Daring Young Mom on Friday, March 14, 8:30 am EDT

I’ve seen all kinds of checklists of how you can tell if your child is read to be potty trained. Does he stay dry for long periods of time? Does he show interest in using the toilet? Has he become intolerant towards wet or messy diapers? Does he behave strangely when he’s about to unleash the fury of his adult-smelling bowels?

The lists are all fairly similar and I’ve noticed that Magoo is exhibiting nearly all the signs of potty-readiness. But personally I am not ready to begin the process. Where’s the checklist to see if the parent is ready? I’ve never seen one of those. So I guess I’ll have to make one up.

  1. Are you about to give birth to a new baby, at which time you will have 3 children still in diapers?
  2. Do you enjoy playing “Find the Urine,” the raucous game where you find yourself walking around the house with your nose sticking out, sniffing to find out where the puddle is?
  3. As you’re driving around town, do you find yourself wishing you could stop every 10 minutes to play Russian Roulette with your family’s health by visiting ANOTHER gas station restroom?
  4. Do you feel that it’s been way too long since you’ve had a nice visit to the Target ladies room? And the Safeway ladies room? And the one at the mall? And at Home Depot? And Costco?
  5. Do you wish you could spend less time eating chocolate and more time sitting on the bathroom floor reading stories to a small person who lives on the toilet?
  6. Do you sometimes lay awake in bed trying to think of new uses for household cleaners?
  7. Do you adore the sound of your own voice saying “Are you wet or dry? DRY!? OOOOoooo! You’re such a big boy. If you have any pee pee, where does it go? That’s RIGHT! In the toilet!! Now are you wet or dry? STILL DRY!!!??” in an infinite loop?

If you answered yes to three or more of these questions, you may be ready to begin potty training your child.

Very funny! For us, Number 3

Very funny! For us, Number 3 was a five hour road trip turned into seven hours because of all the gas station and rest stop trips. I highly recommend the mini plastic portable toilet seat cover. That thing saved us from many germy toilet seats!

Get a box of gallon ziplocs and you'll never have to visit another public restroom again. I trained my kids to go in gallon ziplocs in the car - now there's a life skill!!

I had a friend train her 4 sons to use mason jars while on the road.

2 words: Gatorade bottles. Invaluable not only for our electrolyte levels, but also for our 2 boys on road trips. Then the disgusting game that follows: "Daddy Whose Lemonade Looks Yummier"?.....

I absolutely agree, eventhough I am psychologist, that textbook answers don't always work. Experts should definitely take more mom savvy into account. However, I'd have to say that from my own experience, my oldest son was just about done with potty training when my youngest arrived, changing just one diaper at a time makes a huge difference.... http://psychmom.typepad.com/psychmomreflections

Indeed it was much much easier to change a diaper when I got home rather than make multiple visits to the Wal-Mart restroom. Also? When he's in a public restroom, he all of a sudden he takes on the voice of a radio announcer and comments loudly about the cleanliness/smells/noises/zize of other patrons.

So True! And Timely!

Too true

Ours is semi-trained. I feel like she'll be a teen and I'll still be asking "Ooh, you gotsa tinkle?" every time she makes a funny face.

i think it is at least as important that the mommy be ready as the child when embarking on potty training. i feel like one of the prerequisites be that i am willing to spend three days staying at home and getting absolutely nothing done except for potty training. everything else gets interrupted in those first couple of days. and you spend a lot of time cleaning up messes, as you mentioned! good luck getting yourself geared up for it!

Oh, no kidding. The Baby is sloooowwwwly potty training, and is forever leaving me damp little surprise puddles around the house. (And I shudder to remind you of what she left me on a wicker chair the other day - yikes.)

Petco while potty training

Petco is the best place to go while potty-training...they have little stations with towels and spray for the accident...after the incident at the library, the grocery store, I was not at ALL mortified to be cleaning up a puddle in the middle of a store--since they expect them. Also, once we were out without a change of clothes, but I popped into a resale shop and bought some pants, underwear and socks for less than $5, and he changed right in the parking lot.

Potty Training

My first daughter was so easy I don't even remember it happening. Never wet the bed; I think she must have trained herself because it just seemed that one day we went from diapers to princess underwear. I wasn't ready; pull-ups are so much easier!! But there was no stopping her. My second daughter? Not so easy. I waited for the signs around 18 months (the age her sister went dry) but no, then two years old, then 2.5 years old...she resisted; hated underwear with a fiery passion. So I just gave it up and invested in lots and lots of pull-ups. Then 3.5 years old came and I was like, "come on...you can't go to kindergarten in pull-ups" but still no dice. Then about a month ago, she woke up, got dressed with underwear instead of a pull-up and that was the end of it. In the last month, she has had two accidents (one was my fault) but has never wet the bed. Go figure. Weirdest thing. Guess it really does happen when they are ready. Don't fret overly...

Potty Training LOL!

The day after my son turned 3 we decided to try potty training AGAIN! It went great within three days he was surprising us by running into the bathroom all on his own to pee AND poop! The hilarious part came when on the fourth day he added a new part to the post potty presentation! Every time he pees or poops he wants my husband and I to come in and celebrate saying "hurray!" Well after the fourth day of this he began calling us in and with a flourish of his hands says "Introducing...this" pointing to the "filled"potty seat! We can't stop the laughter!
