Mommy Needs Coffee

Jennifer is an author, freelance writer, and blogger. She was recently published in the anthology Sleep is for the Weak and is currently working on her memoir with a literary agent. She started her personal blog, Mommy Needs Coffee, in 2003 where she chronicles life as an under-caffeinated mom to 3 kids ñ teen boys and an elementary school daughter. In 2005 she founded the blog Mommybloggers to highlight and promote mom bloggers.

Change. Could there possibly be a better word to sum up your life when you become a parent? Perhaps chaotic? Unpredictable? Insane? Tired? Okay, there are many words that can sum up your life when you become a parent. All of them, however, fall under that broad umbrella of change.

Once upon a time, there was a man and wife who slept late on Saturdays. They went on road trips with barely a moment's notice. While scanning the paper, if they saw a movie they wanted to see that started in 20 minutes, they could pick up and be there before the previews began. Yesterday, as I decided I would take a day of rest with my children, I was shocked and surprised when my 7-year-old daughter came up to me and declared, "Today I want to declutter and organize my room." This, coming from a girl who lives by the motto: "Where I drop my toys, that is where they belong."
