Recall Alert: Children's Tylenol

By Jessica at Parenting.com on Thursday, September 24, 10:13 am EDT

Another important recall! And this time, it's something we all probably have in our cabinets: Children's Tylenol.

From Tylenol.com:

"You may have heard that McNeil Consumer Healthcare (the makers of Tylenol) is voluntarily recalling certain lots of Children's and Infants' TYLENOL® liquid products that were manufactured between April, 2008 and June, 2008 in consultation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). ...

These actions do not apply to Children's Tylenol Meltaways and Junior Strength Tylenol Meltaways. The voluntary recall applies only to select lots of Children's and Infants' TYLENOL® liquid products. ...

If you have any of the potentially affected products in your home and have questions you can contact the McNeil Consumer Call Care Center at 1-800-962-5357 (available Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time.)"

I couldn't see the Lot number, so I called and they used the 7 digit number under the expiration date in addition to the expiration date to figure if I had a recalled product. Hope you guys are in the clear like I was- Good Luck!

Generics are fine

Generic Acetaminophen products are not included in the recall. It is for specified name brand Tylenol products only. I am a pharmacist and know. :)

when you see the exp

when you see the exp date, there is a series of letters and numbers right after the date...that is the lot #. Generic brands and store brands that share the same distributor (Mcneil Consumer & Specialty Pharmaceuticals) share the same distributor as Tylenol....for instance...I have a Rite Aid version of Tylenol that was made by Tylenol....But...on the rite aid bottle there is a lot number but they arent the same as Tylenols...i heard they found a bacteria in one of the ingrediants that is used in Tylenol...has anyone else heard that?

Oops!...I take that
9/28/2009 at 8:52 pm
Oops!...I take that back...its dark in here and i missed the beginning of the sentence on the bottle...it said "This product is NOT manufactured or distributed by McNeil Consumer & Specialty Pharaceuticals, distributors of Childrens Tylenol"......my apologies, i am totally in the dark here and was going off the light on my computer screen....That was about the bottle of Rite-Aid brand Tylenol i was referring to in the above statement...so maybe just to be on the safe side...until they make it public about the generics that you may not want to use them either. I do apologize again for my misquote.

REPLY to what if?

I have heard that there was bacteria found in the unused portion of an ingredient. They have not found any of this bacteria in the actual manufactured products. However, they are recalling them as a precaution, just in case. If your child took the medicine, the child should be ok, since no bacteria has been found in the completed product.

I also gave my baby some of the recalled tylenol. I called the number it told me to call on the tylenol website and the number was an automated service telling me to get the information off of their website. I wish I knew what could possibly happen to my daughter. Thankfully Costco took back the opened tylenol and gave me a full refund without a receipt.

Trying to get a refund...
10/2/2009 at 6:33 pm
I called when I found out I had a bottle of the recalled Tylenol, and the lady told me I could take it back where I purchased it from with my receipt and they'll give me a full refund. Like I remember where I bought this particular bottle of Tylenol from months ago???? and really who's still has their receipt???? She said if the store wouldn't take it back, I could call the consumer care 1-800 number back and they would send me a coupon for $1 off my next McNeil product purchase.... are you kidding me? I spent probably around $10 on this bottle and they're going to refund me $1?????? Some voluntary recall.

What about our refunds! Not coupon, this is our children lives
10/5/2009 at 5:35 am
You know that we trust Tylenol, to help our children to get better. I have used tylenol for my children , for years. Now that i have 3 grandchildren and two step- grandchildren. this has been a big problem. because three of my grandbabies have been sick and I used this product on them. What about our childrens live here. they need to be more careful when, making tylenol for our babies. we have always trusted in Tylenol for our childrens health. but not anymore, you cant trust anything they make. Its about money here. i called them about a refund and they want to send me a $1.00 off coupon. WHAT IS THEIR PROBLEM! THEY WANT OUR MONEY BUT WHEN THEY MESS UP, THEY DONT WANT US TO GET OUR MONEY BACK. THIS IS OUR CHILDRENS LIVES HERE. IF SOMITHING HAPPENS TO MY GRANDCHILDREN I WILL SUE TYLENOL!!!!!!!

Compare information with FDA and CDC
10/7/2009 at 2:28 pm
I would suggest comparing information with the FDA and the CDC websites. This bacteria can cause respiratory problems. It affects people with weakened immune systems, lung disease and cystic fibrosis. It can be spread by human contact, contaminated surfaces and the environment. I got all this info from the Center for disease control. I am waiting for a call from my pediatrician because my daughter drank almost half a bottle of the tylenol.
