Psst, Great Baby Gift Over Here

By Sarah at Parenting on Wednesday, December 10, 6:10 pm EST

I feel this (mainly self-imposed) pressure to come up with great baby gifts, since I work at Parenting. I even get asked at parties what people should give their new niece, their neighbor’s kid, whomever. For some reason, I freeze. Faced with a baby shower or a plea from someone who wants to be the cool aunt, I can’t come up with a single thing besides Goodnight Moon. (A must-have, yes, but one even childless young men seem to know about.)

That’s why I’m psyched to have learned about the Sophie Giraffe. Apparently, this is the in toy among New York City moms. And there is something so totally adorable about her:

Sophie Giraffe

She’s made with natural rubber (no phthalates), so is safe for a baby, too. I’ve got all the hip-mama’s concerns covered with Sophie, and I intend to pass her off as my insidery tip for as long as possible. And so, to the woman at the cocktail party last weekend (a little too late): This is the cool new thing. You will be the hit of the shower, and your sister (oh, and her baby girl) will be the stars of the playground.

I've seen this toy mentioned several times, in fact it was this article that finally persuaded me to research the story behind the giraffe as accounted on my own blog. According to the manufacturer, the toy is tailored to the newborn's limited sight, delicate touch, soft feel, identifiable smell, and amusing squeak. I'd be eager to hear any parents who own the giraffe and what kind of success it has with their baby.

I had no idea this was this year's IT toy! We have one, and our daughter loved it when she was younger. That long neck is so easy to grasp, and the squeak is actually cute, not annoying. Off to check out Sophie's Facebook...

My Sophie Story

When Charlie was about 2 months old I saw Sophie on the web and it brought back memories of a squeeky giraffe that I had when I was a baby. I know it sounds strange but I remember because it was my favorite toy and its squeek was distinct. So, I decided I had to have the one I saw for Charlie even if it wasn't the same one, I had to have one. The cheapest one I found was on ebay. When she finally arrived, I found a little story card in her box and began to read it. The more I read, the more I couldn't hold back my tears. My giraffe WAS Sophie! I immediately called my mom and read her the story through my tears. She made it a point to come to my house that night to confirm that she was indeed the same toy. She remembers buying it in the boutique she used to go to for my clothes (there were not very many placed to buy baby clothes in 1968). She said that she remembered thinking that it was so cute and buying it for me. Sophie ended up helping me out as a baby and as a mother. Charlie loved her when he was first teething. He chewed on her constantly.

His favorite thing!

I bought one for my son when he was about 3 months old (now 7 months) and at the time it was the only toy he could really hold. He just loves that giraffe. He gets so excited whenever I hand it to him. I had no idea at the time that it was such a popular and cool toy. I just bought it on impulse! A lot of moms in our playgroup have seen how much he loves it and have bought their little ones one too. Oh and I saw in the latest Life & Style magazine that Suri has one too!
