Maclaren USA Recalls ALL Umbrella Strollers

By Jessica at Parenting.com on Monday, November 9, 1:24 pm EST

The CPSC reports that Maclaren USA is recalling all of their single and double umbrella strollers sold from 1999 through November 2009 – about one million strollers, in all. The models affected are Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, TechnoXLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno and Easy Traveller.

Reports that the hinge mechanism in the back of the stroller can cut (or cut off) children's fingertips has prompted the recall. If you own one of these strollers, you can contact Maclaren USA (877-688-2326 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday. www.maclaren.us/recall) for a repair kit.

Say it ain't so! I love my Maclaren...

twin techno

Ok kids, I have a Twin Techno, I have litterally had all of the OTHER brands of strollers and this is the best stroller out there. This is the ONLY brand my husband who is a cop can't break. That said, it is durable, and good, but they all do have the same problem, all the brands do. My twin girls are NEVER, even around the stroller enless they are IN it. If we take them out of the stroller then it is folded AFTER they are either in thier car seats or in thier playpens away from the stroller. I, an adult, (granted I am handicapped physically) have pinched my fingers a couple times, but that is because I have to use my hands to fold the entire stroller and I cannot use my feet for the 5 second fold. But I am careful and have not lost a digit or anything, just had a pinch here and there, lastly, I also ordered the kit from Maclaren, and I also ordered two Quest strollers as well so I could take one of the twins with me at a time and not allways have to have both with the twin techno. Even with my bad legs the Twin techno still is great to push and not hard for me. So just watch the little hands and be careful. It is hard being a mommy, trust me, trying being a handicapped mommy of twins! So lets quit being hard on each other!

Does anyone know about the British models?? I'm stationed in England and was looking at getting one of these soon. Its one of the few umbrella strollers that i actually like that they have at our baby stores.

Recalled Products
11/10/2009 at 12:12 pm
I assume if the carriage that you like is still available for purcahse then it is not part of the recall. When items are recalled the stores immediately pull all of the product off the shelf/floor so that us consumers can not purchase them! Check with your store manager

recalled stroller
11/10/2009 at 1:00 pm
That's not always true. I use to work for a department store and it never failed that an item would be misplaced in the stockroom or had been moved to another isle and did not get pulled from the shelf when the recall was 1st done. It's always safer to do your own double checking. After all no one cares about your little one as much as you do.

I spoke with Maclaren yesterday
11/10/2009 at 1:32 pm
The Maclaren folks told me yesterday that it did not matter what model stroller you have that they were ALL being recalled due to the hinge mechanism. The mechanism is the same for all models. They are sending me hinge covers in the mail that will prevent any cutting of the fingers. She told me that I could continue to use my stroller as long as all hands are far away from the hinge mechanism when opening and closing the stroller. That only makes sense b/c even if it didn't actually cut off any fingers it would at the very least pinch and hurt REALLY bad. Recall or not - I still love my Maclaren Volo!

11/10/2009 at 8:03 pm
I agree!! You know the only reason they recalled it was because some parents (or parents) were dumb enough to let their kids play there for an extended amount of time and were not paying attention. I love when products that have been around for years start getting recalled for something that is a part of every single product they sell. I understand recalls in a general sense when a product is actually legitimately dangerous, but when its something that has to do with people not paying better attention to their children, shame on them!! I happen to love my stroller, my son has played with it plenty of times and never hurt himself. I guess that's because I keep an eye on him.

What!!! how dare you accuse
11/10/2009 at 10:38 pm
What!!! how dare you accuse the parents of these poor children of being stupid and negligent! Finger tips have been severed in more than ten cases, what would you consider legitimately dangerous? Why would you let your son play with his stroller? Keeping an eye on him or not, a stroller is not a toy. I highly doubt that all of these cases resulted from children playing with these strollers. I know many moms, none of them even leave their strollers where their kids can get at them. Shame on them you say? shame on you!!! It sounds like you are the one who needs to pay more attention to your kid. Maybe if you did he would have a toy he liked, or be playing with you instead of his stroller.

Amazed and shocked
11/11/2009 at 12:33 pm
It amazes me how you speak as if you personally knew these individuals. I'm sure you have absolutely no idea of what transpired to cause the recall. Usually these recalls do not occur unless a significant amount of injuries have been reported, not just pinched fingers. It also does not happen overnight, either. Believe me, recalls are not decisions that businesses make easily. They do it to avoid further liability. That means THEY are at fault in some way. So pick up a book and educate yourself before you make comments about things that that you no idea about. Better yet, play with some educational toys with your baby and he/she will not have to resort to playing with an empty carriage. You might BOTH learn something that way.

Sorry to tell you but some
11/12/2009 at 1:01 am
Sorry to tell you but some recalls are due to parents' negligence. When the Bumbo was pulled from the shelves it was because some children had fallen out when on dining chairs and high places. What parent does not know that you should never place a child on a table and leave them there? Even little ones can fall! Some recalls are legit but some are because of lack of common sense.

Love my Maclaren
11/10/2009 at 2:14 pm
I just ordered the hinge cover from Maclaren's website. It took about 2 min. and should arrive in 5-7 days. I know which hinge is at issue, because I noticed the risk of pinching when I first started using it. That being said, I still love the stroller and will continue to use it. My daughter is still to young to be anywhere close enough to the stroller when I am unfolding it, but I am glad I know about this now and can fix it before something could happen. Thanks to Parenting for sending out the email!

Thank goodness for our Combi!
11/10/2009 at 2:22 pm
Regardless of recalls, parental common sense goes a long way. If a hinge is a hinge - it can pinch, cut or mangle anyone at anytime. A good dose of common sense should tell adults and children alike to keep fingers away from moving parts -period. Although we love our Combi, I do not see this as solely Maclaren defect. They too are quality strollers.

Combi is horrible
11/11/2009 at 11:37 am
I received the combi stroller and matching carseat for my baby shower it was great the first month or two after our son was born and that's all! The stroller was not strong enough with the carseat attached we stopped using it like that after two month then it was a hassle to open and close it because it would get stuck and was hard to straighten it out. At about 5 months my son would pull on the front bar to try pulling himself up in a sitting position and it seriously broke off! I thought the attachment just happened to pop off but it didn't it completely broke. I tried calling the manufacturer to see if they would replace it or atleast fix that part for me the answer was no they offered a discount on my next combi purchase. After my sister spend over $400 on the set with taxes and s/h I said screw that. I went bought him a Joovy Kooper then at about 15 months a Maclaren Quest and til this day he uses both... Mostly the kooper on a daily basis.

Are you kidding me?
11/10/2009 at 2:23 pm
So just because you love your stroller you are going to potentially put your little one at risk? You mean to tell me that you know what your kids are doing 100% of the time? Sometimes kids get into things they're not supposed to without you even knowing until it's too late. You are willing to risk your little one's finger? Unbelievable! I don't care how much I love an object...I love my babies more! Get rid of the Maclaren for God's sake!

It's ALL UMBRELLA STROLLERS!
11/10/2009 at 2:33 pm
ALL strollers have this same hinge mechanic! Maclaren is just the 1st to offer it's appologies. Watch your kids & put potential danger where they are not able to get them. Order the free hinge covers. Life will go on.

Pardon me, M & Em's Mommy, calm down. You're out of line.
11/10/2009 at 3:08 pm
I believe you've misunderstood the previous poster who most likely meant she'd continue to use her stroller with the prescribed hinge cover. Try to keep a damper on that self righteous outrage. Moms get enough criticism. No need to tread on one another. Shame on you.

Ordering the hinge covers
11/10/2009 at 4:51 pm
Ordering the hinge covers should take care of the problem. I'm sure fingers get pinched not only with this stroller but others too. I agree that no one can watch their kids 100% of the time...but other stroller companies are not offering hinge covers. Don't bash Maclaren strollers because of this issue. Maybe you have never used a Maclaren...once you go Maclaren you don't go back...he he jk. Get real. I love my baby just as much as anyone.

it's not only the maclaren
11/11/2009 at 8:31 pm
it's not only the maclaren that has this hinge mechanism. almost all umbrella strollers do, and kids fingers can get pinched in many different strollers. getting rid of your maclaren and getting a different stroller will not necessarily make a difference. i have a maclaren and a combi and i compared them, and the combi has the same hinge, and poses the same potential problem.

still a great stroller
11/10/2009 at 2:31 pm
I still love my Maclaren. This seems to be another case of not reading instructions as they state foot operation only and keep children away while folding!!! But it is true that you cannot always know what your child is up to. Saw on one of the morning news shows that most strollers use similar hinges and fold nearly the same way. As a result all strollers are being evaluated so expect recalls for other brands to soon follow.

my stroller woes...

I LOVE my Maclaren umbrella stroller and have been using it constantly for 2 years!!! I will continue to use the stroller, being careful of the risk and get the "repair kit" as well. Oh recall woes.... I am sad for the families who have been adversely affected by this finger pinching risk..

My comment was towards the person that stated that parents should pay more attention and keep their kids away from things like that. My point was, do we always know exactly what are little one's are doing every second of the day? Isn't it easier to just get rid of the potential danger?

I cannot find the 21-digit VIN number that Maclaren requested in order to send you the repair kit. All the numbers that I found did not consist 21 digits. Can anyone help? I purchased the Triumph stroller in 2005.

That's why I have a Peg Perego Aria OH!
11/10/2009 at 4:53 pm
Not knocking the Maclaren since it seems to be the stroller of choice in NYC, but I've never been into the umbrella strollers, I wanted a stroller with a little more (tray, large storage, a bar and not handles, etc), but at about the same weight as an umbrella one, the Aria is maybe less @ 9lbs. To each his/her own, but I couldn't see myself spending that much for an umbrella stroller with a name, plus the back of the Maclaren always looked too busy to me with levers and bars and it looked like it wasn't easy to get to the small storage basket. The Aria doesn't have that mechanism in the back, there's a button on the handle that you close it with, it's a slide then push mechanism, so it's hard for young children to close themselves. It's also much easier to close with sandals on than an umbrella stroller (ouch!) Even the cheapos from Babies R Us are tricky and seem dangerous (I got one free with purchase once and struggled to close it the other day, almost hurt myself!) I bought an attractive Evenflo X-Sport umbrella stroller to travel with because even if I had a Maclaren, I don't trust airlines! I know space is usually an issue when parents are selecting strollers, and NYC apartments are small, so as I said in the beginning, I'm not knocking the stroller. I'm also not a Peg Perego rep, just letting some parents know that there are other strollers out there! Sorry to hear about all the little kiddies who have gotten hurt, no child deserves that, whether they were meddling with the latch or not. I would imagine that when parents get the hinge covers, all will be good. Good luck!

Almost happened to my kid!
11/10/2009 at 5:17 pm
I know exactly which hinge since my daughter's pinky was almost lacerated! As I was in the middle of opening the stroller, she came by and placed her hand in the stroller in a split second. What happened next scared the crap out of me because she started to scream and cry uncontrollably. Luckily her pinky was pinched and bruised badly for weeks. I can't imagine what those parents have to go through to see their child's finger amputated! I do have to agree that Maclaren is overrated. I use my Graco stroller a lot more than the Maclaren and it costs a lot less.

I actually purchased the Joovy Kooper because compared to the Maclaren it was much more comfortable for my daughter. One thing about the Maclaren and most umbrella strollers is it puts pressure behind the leg near the knee where the seat ends. The Joovy doesn't do this...it is cushioned and contoured. Also to fold the unit down is two pedals...much better in my opinion!!

I totally agree

I also purchased the Joovy Kooper for my son when he was about 6 months and the Maclaren Quest at about 15 months because it's lighter. Living in the city and taking public transportation I thought it was a good stroller but to tell you the truth my son who is now 24 months is much more comfortable in Joovy Kooper and if we used the Quest in a total of 3 months straight it's alot.

Macclaren Recall
11/11/2009 at 6:51 am
I too think the recall is crazy. Macclaren has been selling these strollers for years. They are one of the best out there. We have owned both the volo and the twin triumph as our family has grown for over four years now and we have never had the slightest problem. Children should not be near the back of the stroller, when you are opening it. When we open ours, our kids are still in their carseats, we don't take them out of the car until it is fully setup. That is just common sense. Your child should not be "Playing" with the stroller, it is a piece of equipment not a "toy". I think it is just bad parenting that they are not watching their children closely enough. That is how most recalls satrt, because parents are not monitoring their child, don't blame it on the company, blame it on the parenting, or lack therof.

why in the hell would you buy a 300 dollar stroller anyways. your just going to get rid of it when your child is not of age to use it anymore. and don't you see that all the expensive stuff, well most anyways, always get recalled.. lol. that's funny. ya keep making fun of the cheap poor ppl but all the rich ppl ha ha on you , you just wasted your money on cheap garbage like we would lol lol lol lol.

Easy to order online
11/11/2009 at 12:37 pm
I just ordered my kit. Honestly I haven't had an issue it, but better safe than sorry. I bought a MacLaren this summer because of the weight capacity. It has one of the highest on the market for an affordable price. After I got rid of my daugter's old stroller thinking "I won't be needing this anymore..." Oh, how I was sadly mistaken. Everywhere we would go me or my hubby would end up carrying her in the middle of our trip, making life harder for all of us. Which is really bad when you are trying to go to larger malls, zoos and museums (which we often frequent). One day during a shopping trip I got tired of lugging her around. Keep in mind she was 4 almost 5 (she's tiny for her age, she is now 5, and still wears a 4t with room to spare and weighs 35 lbs). My husband couldn't carry her because he was carrying bags, so we promptly marched into the Babies R Us that was in the same shopping center and made her sit in strollers until we found one that fit. It just happened to be a MacLaren Volo. I love that stroller, it has been a back saver! Now we can actually go places and enjoy ourselves.
