Invite of the Year: Can We Study Your Heaviness?

By Lauren at Parenting.com on Monday, October 26, 1:18 pm EDT

So apparently doctors have "invited" the 1-month-old Indonesian 20-pound boy to Japan to study his development, according to the Japanese Medical Association. What an invite! (Why do I only get invited to Tupperware parties and uninspiring book clubs?)

Neighbors of the bulky babe are worried he will be exploited by the media, something we Americans know nothing about. What do you think would happen if we unleashed this (relatively speaking) tiny human being to the merciless judgment of media scrutiny? Did any of you have really big babies? Would you have offered them up for research?

Big Heavy Baby

I think that the Media, and specifically some reality show honcho will jump all over this, and we'll have yet another voyeuristic nothing on tv to avoid. Haven't we had enough of Big Brother, Survivor, Jon & Kate, America's Got...Something, and Octo-mom???? With what many of us pay for Cable or Satellite, just who's getting all our hard earned dollars? They certainly aren't being spent on providing us with anything even vaguely resembling good entertainment. I mean you can only watch the reruns of a half-decent programme so many times before that too becomes totally boring. Leave the Chubby little guy alone.

Heavy Babies

I had a heavy baby naturally- 9 lbs 3 oz. I don't think he merits a study, nor would I have offered him up for one. I would hope that Japan is doing this research in hopes of helping this boy that was born way too big. I also hope that the mother does not plan on exploiting her child and she is doing this with altruistic intensions. I am sure this size will have detrimental effects on his life- I sincerely hope I am wrong. I hope he will just continue to be a big healthy baby and some day he will look back at this and wonder what made him so special.
